PS3, PSP best-selling systems of June quarter

Sony's console and handheld each move 1.8 million units from April through June; Xbox 360 trails with 1.7 million units sold as Wii adds an extra 1.56 million to installed base.

The console wars are being fiercely contested, but the latest round in the hardware fight has gone to Sony. The quarterly financial filings of Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft have provided some insight into the battle, revealing that the PlayStation 3 and the PSP were the best-selling systems of the previous quarter, albeit by a slim margin.

The PS3 and its portable cousin were the best-selling hardware of the quarter.

Each company provided sales figures for the three months ended June 30 in their most recent filings, with Sony noting that the PS3 and PSP (which enjoyed a February price drop to $130) each added 1.8 million new systems to their installed bases. Microsoft wasn't far behind, with the Xbox 360 selling 1.7 million systems for the quarter.

Nintendo's platoon of platforms followed, with the Wii notching an extra 1.56 million systems sold, and the DS/DSi family of portables (excluding the 3DS) combining for 1.44 million systems sold. The 3DS brought up the rear with 710,000 systems sold, but that number is expected to pick up once Nintendo drops the system's price from $250 to $170, starting August 12.

While Sony's systems wound up at the same number, they came at it from opposite directions. The PS3's sales dropped significantly from the same period last year, when it sold 2.4 million systems. The three-month stretch (which included the PlayStation Network data breach and outage) was the worst sales performance for PS3 hardware in the past two years. On the other hand, the PSP saw a spike in sales, jumping up from 1.2 million systems sold for the same period the year before and posting its best non-holiday quarter system sales since July-September of 2009.

While the PSP rose and the PS3 declined on the hardware front, the two systems flip-flopped when it came to software. Sony reported 26.1 million PS3 games during the quarter, up from 24.8 million for the same period the year before. Meanwhile, the PSP saw its worst quarter of software sales in over two years, moving just 6.6 million copies.

Nintendo's hardware picture was particularly off, as sales of both the DS family of systems and the Wii were down in the neighborhood of 50 percent year-over-year. The company sold 3.15 million DS systems in the April-June quarter last year, and 3.04 million Wiis.

Nintendo's software sales were significantly higher than Sony's, but still down compared to the previous year. The company reported 12.13 million DS games sold, down from 22.42 million for the same period the year before. Wii software sales were also down sharply to 13.44 million, less than half the 28.17 million sold during the previous year's April-June quarter. As for the 3DS, Nintendo reported 4.53 million games sold for the handheld.

The Xbox 360 was also up year-over-year, as its 1.7 million systems sold topped the 1.5 million Microsoft sold the year before. Microsoft did not reveal software sales figures for the quarter.

@abrarkhair Nobody will beat the PS2 sales record this gen (Maybe the DS if you are willing to consider a handheld... 150 mill to 147 mill). The Wii had the momentum, but lost it, the 360 had steady sales for a while, but not enough, and the PS3 had a slow start, but is recovering albeit too little too late. The PS2 record is just too awesome. I am very happy to see all 3 being very successful this time around (Although the PS3 is sitting at 50 mill, or 1/3 of the PS2). I hate to see a console maker slide into the software realm (Sega, Atari). Competition will drive the console makers to innovate and make something great for the next gen. I predict the next gen to be neck and neck between Sony and Microsoft (assuming the rumored capabilities hold), but this round will ultimately be too close to call. I love my 360, but I cannot deny some cred to the PS3. One thing is for certain, though... if any consoles have Blu-ray, the PS4 will be the only one. My prediction is at the end of 2012, all 3 new consoles will release and the current ones will sit at: Wii - 90 Million (currently 87 Mill) XBOX 360 - 75 Million (Currently 55 Mill) PS3 - 75 Million (Currently 50 Mill... GunGriffin, your numbers are outdated) That's pretty liberal as the 360 will need to sell another 20 mill and the PS3 another 25 Mill in a year and a half.

Well to add some perspective to this fanboy debate without causeing hate to come up PS3 currently has a 30 million world wide user install base, of that 30 million only about 20 million are online at any given time and of that 20 million about 10 million are playing games. Where as with Xbox360 with it's now as the tallay goes 60 million world wide install base with about 30 million of them online every day, plus about 18 million playing games day by day it shows that while PS3 has made some headway, it's not enough, Nor IMHO it might not ever be enough with Kinect showing off what it can do, and MS pulling all the stops out for exclusive titles that look better then Crysis 2 graphicly, and have even more features like Yue-Tube, and Dimand TV, plus the new dashboard, adn a search function, as well as XBL Beacons I must say that XBL is still THE place to be for online interaction. That said PS3 has Yue-Tube, and a net browser thats about as good as what a 8 year old black barry phone can do. Plus if you look at the features lost section PS3 has lost more features then any console to date. Too make a long story short close Sony, but you need to mandate matchmakeing, and at least 4 years worth of support for your titles to beat XBL, plus you would also need to bring back BC to the PS3, and on top of that stop selling old PS2/PSP titles ported to PS3 to cover your loses over PSN that cost you a full years worth of profits when it was hacked.

I haven't been on here for a while, simply because of the anti sony vibe that GS love to put out, and here's the perfect example why - the article starts off by saying how sony are selling more consoles "albeit by a small margin" then goes on to say "sonys sales dropped significantly" over last year - tsunami anyone?!? But then just had to finish on a high note for MS by saying that its sales were up on last year. At the end of the day, I couldn't give a crap what console I play games on, but there is a reason that sony are starting to overtake, and its because sonys console was built with longer legs than either of its two rivals, once MS and ninty bring out their new consoles we will probably see a shift again back to one or the other, the problem this gen is (for me anyway) is that I'll be very reluctant to buy another console for at least 2-3 years, because graphics are at point where they no longer matter to me - its the content I go for, so as long as the devs are making good games for the current gen, thats where I'll stay. And if all this motion and touch screen crap is the future of gaming - count me out. (I'm an old git and gaming reached its pinnacle with the Amiga)

It's always interesting to see sales firgures so far down the line.. My guess is the Playstation 3 will make big sales with the introduction of Uncharted 3 - that's bound to be a boost for the system. The same as the 360 will get a boost with Gears. Next year however is going to be the real testing time, if Starhawk ends up being as revolutionary as folks are saying it'l be interesting to see what happens then (providing the game gets the coverage). (for any of you that haven't had a look check it out, it looks set to be a winner) My final bet is that just as Sony begin to close in on Microsoft's sales total, Microsoft's next console will come out. In fact it's probably going to be a recurring pattern. There's little point the two companies going head to head from the off and they both know it, it's all a matter of who can get theirs out first without risking being behind in tech. That said though look at this generation.. Sony's on a comeback. And they're a full year in hand too. Oh aye.. Roll on Skyrim - Cannot wait!

Go ps3 go, I don't want the developers concentrate games for the pspvita. They should have made a portable ps3 instead.

@thuban Baffling Hypothesis dude  I own Wii, PS3 & X360 etc.so read this first and don't just flame me. If PS3 graphics processor is still so much better compared to X360 then why do more Xbox games run @1080P? If they are upscaled internally or not I dont care - they output 1080P. I thought PS3 (not just the Blu-Ray) was tailored for 1080P? so why? Also why do most X360 games run faster and smoother than PS3 games? Noticed this is not just confined to 3rd party releases...

I used to play my 360 all the time, but ever since i tried to cancel my xbl account and the xbl guy i was talking to offered me a month of xbl for a dollar and ended up charging me for a two year subscription and i still have not gotten my money back, i kinda moved over to the ps3 so go sony! and it helps that i got my ps3 for 20 bucks :)

@thuban the graphics of ps3 is always ground breaking. Sony said that the next gen would not be a leap mile away from the current graphics. Try to compare the graphics outside your home and the graphics of a ps3, little difference. Could there be a visual graphics that goes beyond of what you see outside? i don't think so, ps3 is enough

Console wise we're at the point where sales figures are almost meaningless... both machines have sold well enough that they'll both be supported by the big software developers so it's counts for little. It's not like the last generation where it was so one sided it hurt, we're still going to see great games appear on both consoles until they are replaced so who gives a gnats fart apart from the fanboys. Presumably when the PS3 eventually passes the 360 in sales (and it must be sort of embarrasing that its still not happened when you consider the massive advantage the PS2 had) sales figures will matter again to the Sony fanboys.

@louisfoxton actually the PSP is better than DS.Tons more features better game market...yeah... I think what u meant to say was that the games r not better than Ds games... But I have to point out that games r based on opinion and experiences.

well, I really like Sony for the games and the console. However, working for Sony or giving them my credit card. Hmmmm, well not every company is perfect. Hoping the ps3 won't be overshadowed by the pspvita cuz im planning to buy one.

@dancingsmurfs01 Using that logic every game made is an exclusive game. Every game is excluded from something and that isn't a valid argument at all.

@BigBossHQ Bad for Sony's sales or for all of humanity :P lol. If Apple does make a console it will fail as it has too strong competition, and most console people know how bad all their other products actually are.

thuban

this is where ps3 will start getting the console upper hand into the next gen choice. the xbox is now starting to struggle with graphics as the game devs get better and we are the the top 5% of visual quality for the 360, until the next gen xbox is out , what we have is basically what we will get, whereas the ps3 still has about 1more year of visual improvements to hit its ceiling. plus blu ray v dvd. because of this. if xbox release a new console next year, there is a good chance that the lauch xbox titles can and will look very similar on ps3, giving ps4 approx 1 more year to up the tech to bring out an even better system than xbox technologically, yet again. that said, it also means xbox will have more unit sales giving them more edge in the new game devs exclusive range. INTERESTING TIMES AHEAD it dont really bother me, i have and always will have both :) @BigBossHQ ... if apple can get a gaming system together as good a polished as their other products, im sure it will rock the world and force some huge changes, like the iphone did. ID LIKE TO SEE IT HAPPEN.

@Hrel Nice deducting, but in fact PS3 sold 1.8 million and PSP ALSO sold 1.8 Mil, says right here "Sony noting that the PS3 and PSP each added 1.8 million new systems to their installed bases." Next time read properly

@lifemeister Alright if you say it like that fine, but then Halo ain't Xbox's Mascot, it was on Xbox AND PC and exactly how can it be the mascot if it was multiplatform? Same thing with Gears of War.

It's not so bad. You know what would be very bad? If apple join this competition :P (sorry for my english)

I still can't get over the RROD dilema. I think that has greatly deterred a lot of people, including me from getting another xbox360 unit. Though at that time, when mine broke, I still had the warranty. But the hassles that went with it, the what ifs and the uncertainties definitely aren't worth experiencing. Even if current xbox 360 consoles claim to be RROD plague-free, from time to time you'd hear news about it popping everywhere. Since when I got it repaired, I couldn't enjoy my games anymore seeing that I was constantly worrying about the "EYE". Instead of fully experiencing the game, my mind was on the light indicators, my heart skips a bit every time those darn lights shifted. Good thing MS forego of the rings in their latest design. It was a smart move seeing that those hellish rings were so stigmatized--gives me the shivers. My XBOX360 was interred later on--go figure.

@chilly-chill @shadowhunter0 I play my Go a lot too. I'm also 99% sure that the 6 million PSP games sold does not include PSN purchases. Tho I guess that's kind of moot when the PSN was down for the past 3 months. lol

Glad to see sony doing well, honestly thought they would take a big hit on sales after the outage, Good on them! but here's my 2 cents, this late in a generation i dont see why we still comparing numbers, Why is everyone looking 'for a clear victor' in the console wars? therse is no victor (victor is a russian guy thes doesnt know what a console looks like) I wish all fanboys would S T F U ! both consoles has their + and -,

@steelmouth I think these might actually be world wide total sales for once. Gamespot always talks about the 360 selling more but only in the US, They never talk about world wide sales of all the systems which can cause the confusion of which console actually sold more.

I don't see why people combine numbers...really the PSP is to the PS3 what the 360 is to PC's...related but different catagories.

Fanboyism = More competition = Better Consoles + Games = More Customoers/(fanboys) = more demand from gamers = even better consoles and games = Even more competition = Even Better consoles + Games = More Customers/(Fanboys) I think im just babbling on about something think what i just said as a circle and thats how fanboyism helps the industry
