PS3 motion controller games named; PSP Go gets accessorised

TGS 2009: Sony reveals new and existing first-party games that will use its motion sensing technology next spring, including a PS3 Ape Escape and Echochrome 2.

TOKYO--With Sony Computer Entertainment head Kaz Hirai delivering a keynote address at the opening of the Tokyo Games Show today, many expected some new announcements to be made. But what Hirai delivered instead was a fairly news-less speech, with the only notable fact being that the new Slim PS3 had sold more than a million units within three weeks of launch.

However, at a press conference held later in the afternoon, Sony confirmed that the new motion controllers for the PS3 would indeed be available in spring 2010, But more importantly, the company revealed which first-party games would actually be supporting the new technology. Ape Escape, Echochrome 2, Eccentric Slider, Sing and Draw, Champions of Time, Motion Party, The Shoot, and Tower will be new games which will incorporate motion controller use from their release. Other games such as Pain, Flower, Hustle Kings, High Velocity Bowling, and Eye Pets will be made compatible via downloadable updates.

Also announced were new accessories for the yet-to-be-released PSP Go. A Bluetooth stereo headset and a converter cable adapter will be released on December 24, 2009, in Japan, at a recommended retail price of ¥4,980 ($54.58) and ¥1,980 ($21.70), respectively. Sony has confirmed that these two accessories will eventually make their way to North America, Europe/PAL territories, and Asian countries and regions beginning January 2010.

Will this fall flat like the playstation eye? or will it rise at a slow and steady pace like the Wii? Only time will tell...

I'm liking this a lot more than Natal. I guess motion controls are the way of the future and as much as I don't like that I would rather have an accurate and in depth controller rather than nothing at all.

i think that sony is trying to play it safe? they know the wii mote works already. Personally i like how microsoft is stepping it up and being creative with natal. Go big or go home for natal.

I'm not a PS3 owner but I acctually think PS3's motion controller looks alot more accurate. All of the demos theyve showed on natal look jittery and less responsive. I'm not saying natal is going to be aweful, but i just dont think its gonna work as well on some of the hardcore titles.

kevin8se7en, you're an idiot. A mouse is a 2D device and can't sense wrist rotation. Natal will be a great casual platform however, without buttons, force feedback, audio feedback, Wii and Sony are just more practical.

I'm not a fan. It's basically the same thing as a wireless mouse for your computer. Think about it... the only difference is that instead of pointing towards a camera, your mouse is pointed downwards and your motions are tracked on the screen. There are 3 different ways to so things on a screen.. 1. Controller navigation For example, when you are using the PS3 web browser and use the thumbsticks to navigate. 2. Motion controller For Example when you navigating with a mouse on your computer. It senses where you are pointing the mouse. Instead of pointing at the screen, you point downwards. 3. Free control Natal is an example of this, you can do anything because you don't have 1 thing controlling something but instead have endless things controlling other things. In Natal, it sense EVERYTHING. If you want to use the PS3 controllers with balls on the end of them, you can in Natal. In the PS3 eye motion thing, it only senses the controller ball thing and some movement. I don't see how this is even remotely comparable to Natal. This is basically Sony's version of the Wii-mote and them taking it to the next step. Natal is a totally new concept and is a LEAP ahead of this junk.

Oh snap. Didn't see that RE5 was getting motion support. That's big ticket enough for now...it will be interesting to see how this works in a real game.

The sticks themselves are kinda odd, but the controls look absolutely fantastic. And as the Sony guys mentioned, the buttons make it better suited to more 'serious' games, as compared to Natal.....but the big question on developer support remains. I don't know much about PS3-exclusives, but far as I could tell there weren't any big tickets in that list of initially supported games....of course for a big-budget title to actively support this technology would require rework from the ground-up I guess.....Well. I'm not getting too excited just yet.

Teturk ... hahaha ur not the brightest kid on the block. The technologies maybe similar but the efficiency & engineering is different. Wii & Natal are going to be a pain in the ass to use & the PS3 motion control will give the best gaming experience for GAMERS not those who want to entertain them selves ..... so run along boy and get ur facts straight.

Garbage... If I were in the audience I will shout as loud as I can: "WII already does this you idiots! Stop stealing ideas from Nintendo and be original!"

This games sound boring, although if RE5 works anywhere near as good as RE4 wii, then it's going to be awesome. Just not as awesome as RE4.

Oh and if someone says something about the suit wouldn't make it physical or something, watch Futurama and if it still isn't enough, then just make it a fu**ing room or something.

sensual-_-panda

Man this is a hard thing to comment on. People usually say "Oh it's crap" without having played it, some remain optimistic, and some just don't know what to think. Honestly I like the idea of moving towards a more physical way of playing than a joystick. I mean really who hasn't dreamt of putting on some kind of suit that puts you in a game, and you can do whatever your character is supposed to do. The whole r4pe factor of Protype, the skill of a good soldier in an FPS, being an assassin, and my favorite: filling Solid Snake's shoes and being a full-on stealth warrior. Point being that even if this isn't what I've been talking about, it's a step in the right direction. So please people, don't just think it'll be great because it's new, it might not, but it could be a very great lesson if it isn't. Don't think you pessimists are safe from my slight scolding either. If you are too damn stubborn to try some new way of gaming, then just STFU and GTFO because you'll soon get left behind and you're getting in the way of me being a virtual juggernaut.

kavadias1981

@shani_boy101 Well, regarding your first paragraph, the same could be said of many games. I have actually watched my 4 year old daughter crush veteran gamers online on Soul Calibur 4 just by mashing the buttons. But sure, the Wii remote is the same thing but instead of mashing buttons, you wave around like a loon. It is the games, not the control method. Secondly, you have never even held the PS3's Motion Eye controller so you personally have no right to comment on its capabilities, the same goes for Natal. Finally, the Wii remote on its own is basic but with Wii M+ it creates the level of realism that is on par with the PS3 Motion Eye.

sounds good, but those new games that support motion sound like Wii-type games. hopefully they won't be clogging up store shelves. when they get it supported with more mainstream games (like it is with RE5, for example) then i'll be getting it.

Game designers everywhere have to be stressing out. Not only do they have to deal with the different architectures of each of the consoles in this more complex generation of digital goodness... making sure movement, lighting, textures, perspectives, voice acting, STORY, PR, and a million other things go well and as planned... but now they are probably getting pressured by Sony and Microsoft to incorporate motion in games 6-12 months out. Granted motion is not for every game, but it's just one more thing in a tough economy game makers are being made to consider.

Wow, this looks better than the Wii, which was built around motion controlls anyway..

I don't care much about how it looks, but I do care about the possibility of not just catering to the casual crowd. I think that the technology seems better than the Wii, and not as ambitious as Natal. Sony seems to have the right idea. While Natal seems amazing, it could easily end up a major flop and might only just find a home with casual gamers. Sony has a few casual games, mostly on PSN, but they think more about the hardcore folk who want to use a lightsaber to slice off body parts of their choosing rather than just shaking the controller around a certain way for certain, limited directions. I understand Motionplus can do that, but the Wii should have been able to do that right at the start.

I think Sony has it right, and might eventually do great things with their motion controller, but I will have to sit and wait to find out...

LewisJ999

I don't know why, but I don't like the motion control idea that much. I like it on the wii, but it feels out of place on the PS3.

The games being released for it as of now aren't convincing me to buy it just yet, and hopefully the controller design has changed into something better looking.

Dualmask

The Wii was designed with the motion functionality in mind while it's being added to the other consoles after the fact (kind of the way a lot of gaming innovations are added after Nintendo popularizes them...shoulder buttons, analog sticks, rumble, etc.). While I'm sure Sony motion controller and the Natal thing will be nice and all, they're not going to get people to get rid of their Wiis (who weren't already planning to do so), because the Wii is a lot more than motion controls. It's a great, unique console in its own right. No matter how advanced the motion control gets, I'll always have a Wii next to my PS3.
