PS3 game Beyond: Two Souls sold 1 million copies in 2013

Game still has a lot of work to do to catch up to Heavy Rain, which has sold 3 million copies.

by

PlayStation 3-exclusive Beyond: Two Souls sold 1 million copies in 2013, Quantic Dream announced today through a special website marking the sales milestone. The millionth copy of the game was sold shortly before Christmas. The game features the voices and likenesses of actors like Ellen Page and Willem Dafoe, among others.

Beyond: Two Souls launched on October 8, meaning it managed to sell 1 million copies in just three months. It still has much work to do if it is to catch the sales mark of its predecessor, however, as Heavy Rain has sold more than 3 million copies to date.

Signs are positive, at least in France. Beyond: Two Souls sold 70,088 copies in 2013 in France, outpacing the 12-week sales mark of Heavy Rain in the country, Quantic Dream co-CEO Guillaume de Fondaumiere said on Twitter, citing data from Gfk Chart-Track.

For more on Beyond: Two Souls, check out GameSpot's review. Quantic Dream is currently working on a PlayStation 4 game that studio head David Cage previously described as "very, very different" than Beyond: Two Souls or Heavy Rain.

At its heart i'ts an adventure game.. They usually tell good stories." Gameplay"? not so much. Adventure games nowadays usually don't sell well.(millions) And to have a AAA budget for a adventure game exclusively for a Console is crazy.NO ROI

That is because it is exclusive! I'd have bought it if it was on Xbox 360 or PC. But it wasn't, so I didn't. YOUR fault.

I aM STUNNED, this game is amazing, the thought that disneys junk of the week has sold more then this games leaves me doubled over.

I figured for sure this game would be in the 4-5 millions by now. The fact that ICO didn't sell well was a crying shame - the last of us selling only 1 million is a crime and shows how bad the gaming community has become if fps drowns out a great game like this or how poor gaming journalism is at not bringing attention to such a fine game.

Still though cannot believe it has sold soo little.

Just to get this out of the way. The Last of Us didn't sell like crap. I don't know what you people are talking about. As of right now, it has sold over 4 million copies. Uncharted 2 and 3 have roughly sold 6.3 million each. Among Thieves being released over 4 years ago and Drakes Deception being released over 2 years ago. The game has been out six months and when I read comments on here, other gaming sites, youtube, etc. All I hear is that "I shouldn't have sold my PS3 for a PS4, hopefully they release a version for PS4 now." The game will reach or surpass these games in the long run. Not all games reach over ten million units sold like GTA and Call of Duty.

Secondly, I like Beyond Two Souls. I liked Heavy Rain better, though. The story was great, I was always glued to the screen waiting to find out what was next. It did drag on and have some weird story arches, but overall it was good. Ellen was fantastic and she did an incredible job. I'm all for these types of games, but there needs to be a tad more game play. It became tedious just pushing the analog for huge portions of the game.

Ah thought I'm on IMDB's news section for a second.

Yeah I love Ellen Page and all but...it is nowhere near as good as Heavy Rain.

1 Million? Really? HOW?

Unlike most people I actually liked this game. What I did not like about this game is the Quenten Tarantino style of story telling out of order. I think this game would have benefited more from a linear story rather than a constant jumping around in the protagonists life. Also in retrospect, while I applaud the inclusion of a-list actors as a huge step in bridging the divide between Hollywood and game development, I am now thinking that with the absolute wealth of great voice actors in the gaming industry it would have been cheaper to just use a Jennifer Hale with an original CGI character.

It didn't sell that much because of two reasons. First, the main actress is so bad and looks like a boy, and should have been replaced with a real GIRL. Second, (spoiler) the beginning of the story was good and but the idea of the infraworld, condenser and the monsters is so stupid and boring unlike the idea and the story of heavy rain.

If they released this has a movie it would have been £10 but as seen as its a game they charged £40 and add QTE to resemble a game to charge the £40.

I liked it. The dating mini game thing was not really to my taste but rest of the game was solid.

I wouldn't be surprised, if this doesn't come close to Heavy Rain. I'd be shocked if people act like those in B2S, not to mention the rest of its shortcomings.

Wow that's pretty bad.  I hope David Cage can bounce back from this with a hit.  His games are unique and interesting, and I think he has a masterpiece lurking in him somewhere.

Would've bought this, but chose the PS4 instead.  Reckon it might've sold more if it wasn't right on the time of new console releases. Prob get it through PS Now on the PS4.

Look at this playthrough: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GA_VUoePgrc

The playthrough is much more entertaining to watch than playing this game, man why even play this game? there is nothing to play really.

This game got outsold by stuff like Colonial Marines and DmC.

Not bad, Frenchies. Not bad at all.

Now work on this France. Get more involved in game development and less involved in extremely safe publishing(Ubisoft). Just my two cents.

I thought it was worth a playthrough. The following march to Platinum the game is a bit of a chore, though.

I didn't really like it but I'm kinda glad it sold sorta well. I'd like to see other developers keep trying different things and that's probably harder when these sort of experiments turn into complete disasters.

Good.  I am glad to see a game that isn't your run-of-the-mill shooter sell well.  It can even encourage other developers to take bigger risks.

This is barely a game, its more like a really bad movie with really bad interactive sequences. I,m surprised this piece of crap has sold 1m copies.

Maybe for some games like this, and also something like Puppeteer they would have been better of pushing it a few months and launching it with the ps4.

I'll get to you when I can Beyond two souls. I got like 40 games in my backlog I still need to beat and I plan on getting a PS4 in march. So you'll have to wait a while because my wallet can't afford it right now lol.

Yeah that doesn't surprise me, but it's still sad. I wish Quantic Dream would make a good game.

Kinda lame. Early access of Starbound on Steam sold 1M in one month. And DayZ is pretty close to that too.

I recongnize the control mechanics were far from great but I still enjoyed the time I spent on that game! It was nice to play something different and it felt refreshing.  I hope it sells more and I'm looking foward to QD next project!

Sony exclusives sell poorly. Funny how they are all Sony console owners go on about.

pupp3t_mast3r

@Dannystaples14 Given that the title of the article compares the game to Heavy Rain another PS3 exclusive your point is without merit.

@yes_um_no_yeah I personally think they shot themselves in the foot when they released the game soo close to the ps4 launch if the game came out a few months later I might have gotten it now its kinda put on the back burner for me to pick up later which is too bad but I already have plans on getting the new infamous next month so BTS has to wait a bit for me anyways.

jenovaschilld
jenovaschilld

@yes_um_no_yeah Agree with you, i mean i think bioshock infinite was the better game this year then BTS, but this game should have sold way more then it did and was pretty close to a masterpiece.

Kryptonbornson
Kryptonbornson

@Garm31 That's not a lot you know. With all the PlayStation owners and Ellen Page this game should have sold more. if this game wasn't a PlayStation exclusive, it could have sold 5 million copies or more by people who turn out to hate the game like GTA V.

Kryptonbornson
Kryptonbornson

@ebonyflame What you mean is that real faces don't translate well into lifeless game characters. They are better off basing the character on a fake one you make like The Last of Us used Page's likeness. Ellen Page is no model, but she's "cute" and the character Ellie captured that. Too bad both The Last of Us and Beyond sold poorly.

DaRq_MiNoS

@Ehggsz Well a million copies isn't very good for an AAA game.  Don't even know if that would cover much more than the cost of hiring Willem Dafoe and Ellen Page.

@DiverseGamer Its ok.  If you liked Heavy Rain, chances are you will like this as well just don't have too many expectations for the story and remember:  No idea is truly original these days

@pupp3t_mast3r What and you think Heavy Rain selling only 3 million is something to strive for?

That means the PS4 alone has sold more than that single piece of software.
