The PlayStation 3's firmware has been upgraded to 1.51, just over a week after the announcement that the console would be getting download 1.50. According to the official Web site, the latest update doesn't add all that much to the system, simply adding a few minor tweaks, including the ability to select an image from your photos as a user icon and a change to the method for automatic sign-in. It also claims that the new firmware will expand "support for PS2 format software titles."
oo btw the update sorta helps, much better looking now the words and logos dont have jags and its much brighter. still looks slopy but close enough to ps2 now only if they can upscale games and dvds same for 360 they have to do that too wii, is awesome, needs something for my hdtv though cuz tired of looking at blurry graphics after playing other 2
kinda sux how ps2 games werent coded for hd (i have a hdtv ps3 hooked through hdmi widescreen) but wen i play mgs3, it looks same as on ps2 but yeah wat can i say 480p wit little jags here and there hey is 480p even supposed to have jags in them because all my ps2 games have it wen hooked through hd wires. 720p n up for ps3 games are fine.
why the hell wont my ps3 detect that theres a new firmware update?? i eventually gave up and downloaded it onto a flash drive but that wont work either! help plz
thats cool---the xbox360 has had several upgrades since it came out--and by time i go to buy my ps3 the updates will have my system ready for ps2 backwards compatability--i am also sure that the 360 is continuing to be backwards compatable- .... ..... .....and as for xbox360 games--they arent coming out any faster for the 360 than any other console--so sure buy a 360--play what few games they have out there -worthy of playing--dead rising is ok--but 12 hours later you are done---gears of war--10 to 15 hours later you are done-lost planet 10-15 hours you are done--180 bucks for 30 to 40 hours of gameplay isnt that good of a bargain--and not they saying gears of war or dead rising--cant recall which one--only took 10 million dollars to make--they could have sold this game for 49.99 and still made alot of money-- .. ... and wii games are 49.99 for old games thats already been played on the ps2 and the xbox--not sure if i am going to blow money on games i have already conquered i sold my xbox360--to be able to buy a newer one without the glitches and heat problems--so i know i will have the ps3 and 360--nt sure about the wii
So I did the upgrade from 1.32 to 1.51, and I am very happy now that Now I can consider the PS2 truly "retired" and not have to decide between (1) playing crappy-looking PS2 games on the PS3 or (2) feeling like an idiot for having a PS2 and PS3 hooked up to the same television. I personally haven't been clamoring for upscaling for DVDs (because I don't really watch many movies), but I know of a number of people who have. I've seen at least two people walk into a store apparently ready to buy and then walk out empty-handed over that issue. So it may be costing them potential sales not to upscale DVDs. Sony's best bet is to retain as much of their PS2 base as they can, and the best way to do that is to give them (us) a smooth upgrade path from the world of PS2 games + DVD to the world of PS3 games + Blu-Ray. Upscaled DVDs and high-def PS2 games would be reason enough for many people to get a PS3 while we wait for the PS3 library to shape up with some "must have" games.
ricruhlman i coudnt agree with you more, what is the point of having a PS3 hooked up w/a HDMI cable to my LCD HD TV if my DVD's are going to look the like crap!! THE PS3 NEEDS TO UPSCALE DVD'S!!!
This is a great update to the PS3. All my PS2 games look great and Blazing Angels for the PS3 that had sound clipping in and out are now working perfectly. If Sony can continue making improvements to the PS3 as quickly as they are it will be interesting if the potential and equality of the PS3 will expand. After this update I can easily suggest anyone to take the next step and put down the PS2 and get yourself a PS3.
Agreeing with Dr.Wookie; I'm definitely not buying a PS3 straight away (especially at around £425), but I'm definitely thinking of getting a 360 right now, especially now that games like Dead Rising and GoW are out. I'll probably get a PS3 half-way through it's lifecycle, maybe for DMC4, and other interesting games, if any. (MGS4 comes to mind.) I got a Wii for Christmas (after wanting one desperately), and it's actually just sitting below my TV waiting for new games. I'm rather sad about it. The last decent game I had was WarioWare, and I'm done with that already. So, yeah. Both the PS3 and Wii need to start picking up, or else I may as well buy a 360 to fill my needs in the meantime.
Thanks Cloud890, that's the question I had about the update. I still have to use my PS2 because all my games look so bad on my PS3. I just got Rogue Galaxy and I would like to finally be able to retire the PS2 to the hunting lodge upstate and play my PS2 games on the PS3 at home.
Sony is a loser... They were always complaining about microdot releasing updates to 360, that it was like a PC! Now they turn like this.....
Sony... lets get a real firmware upgrade so that they Blu-Ray will also upscale regular DVD's to 720 or 1080i. You will sell more PS3 based on that alone.
Finally someone posts a thread that has some intelligence. Thank you. theKSMM. PS3 has not even reached its peak. To many fanboys on these systems. Stop being a fanboy and just start looking at the facts. Even the game stores have fanboy. Its pathetic. The firmware updates are not there just for the hell of it. They are doing PS3 owners some justice.
theKSMM, Well said. I was always asking about the PS2 update because right now, at least in my opinion, there aren't any good PS3 games. I waited to buy the 360 until around 6 months after release and to be honest I should have done it with the PS3. I rented Resistance but it was nothing new and so far I haven't even purchased a game for the PS3. I would like to enjoy my PS2 games but like half of the ones that I try to play (and oddly...the better half like Gods of War and the Final Fantasy games) have incredibly jaggy graphics that almost create like a "screen flicker"....it is horrible to look at and is just sad. I'm not asking that they make the PS2 games look BETTER then they did on the PS2 (like run them in HD)...I'm just asking if they could make them look the same. I don't think that is so much to ask. And it will definately be a bummer if it turns out they just lack the hardware to fix the issue...That would suck because I don't see a game I'm interested in coming out for at least 2 or 3 months. (Unfortunately games like Saints Row and Oblivion I already have/tried on the 360 so there is no point).
I continue to be amazed at the comments I read on these threads. Most of you are spewing misinformation, showing that you have That's not a bad thing. Software complexity is at an all-time high, and as we ask it to do more and more, the chances of mistakes being made is higher than ever too. And many updates add functionality that we weren't even considering when we bought the system. I didn't expect my PSP to browse the Internet when I bought it, but I think it's hella cool that it can now. Frankly, firmware updates are the only way Sony is going to catch Microsoft in the interface and online capabilities departments. And it's the only way Nintendo is gonna fill up all those little channel icons they give. I think it's great. Can't wait to see what comes out next. I do want Sony to provide and update to make PS2 games look better. If they could make them playable in high def (like the 360 does with its compatible XBOX titles) that would be great. But they at least need to look as good as they did on the PS2. I can stomach it on drops, I might have to break out the PS2 again just so I can enjoy it in the way it was meant to look. That kinda sucks, especially since the backward compatibility on the PS3 is really good (much better than on the 360 anyway). Unfortunately, rumor has it that the PS3 simply doesn't have the hardware it needs (i.e. a video scaler) to improve the PS2 graphics, so I'm not completely optimistic. But if they ever make it happen, I'm sure it will be thanks to the availability of firmware updates. Updates are here people, and they're good for you. Get used to it.
So does this make the PS3 region free for PS1 and PS2 games yet? the updates are worhtless until this happens.
Don't be scared if you update your PS3 to 1.51 and it fails to play games. Just perform the "Restore Default" and it will be just fine.
Are they going to fix the backwards compatibility issue with games like FFXII and FFX? They look horrid on the PS3 on the same TV when compared with running them on PS2. Who cares if it is "fully" backwards compatible if the games look like sh*t compared to what they originally looked like?
GuardianofRice - "Why doesn't Gamespot post articles on Wii or 360 system updates?" =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- They do, it's just not as common for the 360 to get updates these days, and the Wii almost never gets them.
I'm loving the new updates! Always adds some new functionality or something. I have only one complaint about this recent one: How do I use one of my own personal pics as me avatar?
"Latest download will make the console support more PS3 games..." Is this a typo, Emma? I'd hate to think Sony made a console that needs a firmware update to run its own games...
SinfulTorture Dude TryMe01 >_> it says 'ps2 format software titles" NOT ps3 >_ DUDE! if you read the line under the heading, then you would know... :P

Psst. Here's a little secret; ALL systems are flops at launch! I've yet to see a 9.9 game as a launch title for any system, the closest being Twilight Princess for Wii.

Since when Halo was a best-selling title for the 360? Around March of 2006, i dont think the 360 had any best-selling titles. Look ahead and check out the list of games being released for the PS3.
"Latest download will make the console support more PS3 games" now i am certian that the ps3 is broken and released unfinshed... sony has lost so much respect and praise from gamers and consumers alike

mowin90 when will we get a big update like a better internet browser and multitasking so i can play while downloading? That major update was confirmed for March. Only one month to go playa.
This is one of the reason i like 'em - the project is in constant development. And hopefully we'll see a smaller unit when they transition to a smaller cpu and other ics and parts etc. If they upgraded to that 6 GHz variation of cell. That ibm managed to reach, would really put a smile on my face. Maybe it's too soon for that...
didnt they already come out with an update to make ps2 games play better are is this an update to an update
Ummmm the only real update SONY needs now....is more games....good ones...so you know you'll sell more systems and stuff like that.
Updates... tsk tsk tsk. You would think that something simple like a photo user icon... you know.. could of been put in there from day 1. Its not exactly like a fantastically brand new idea or anything. I bet the the next update will have some sort of function where you can actually zoom in on a part of the photo, and use that zoomed in part as your user icon. Hmm... ps3 is more like XP every day. I feel that the ps3 has gone this way because, well, its their only option to try and dominate. Apple are taking the mp3 market, and specifically the online music market, and soon with the iphone - the phone market. Microsoft have windows (not forgetting apple having their own OS and everything, too) and also a console. And Nintendo have the handheld DS and GBA and the Wii. For Sony to gain any serious ground, it has to cover aspects that aren't taken. Hence the ALL IN ONE PC/CONSOLE/MEDIA PLAYER. It sounds like a great idea, but I personally think that these updates are just the start of it. Look in the small print, Sony are allowed to do WHAT THEY LIKE with their software, whether you like it or not. I cant stand updates. Microsoft updates, Wii updates... I like to have the option to update, I like the idea of getting what I paid for. If I liked the console as it is on day one, no user icons or anything, then I should have the option to add this if I wanted to. with the PSP, Sony can literally chop and change anything that they like. For example, if Action Replay make a cheat device for it, Sony can just make an update which nullifies everything that Action Replay could do, like maybe Region X for ps2 or something. Sony do crafty things like package updates, whether you need them or not (like this update, for example) in with games. So in order to play the game you HAVE to update. I hate this kind of thing, hate it with a passion. I think that updates, if done like with the psp - could potentially make the ps3 a BAD console. The ideology of updates is awesome, keep the product with the times. However, Sony have always forced these updates on us. This I do not like.
