PS3 firmware update 4.45 locking up some consoles - Report

Update allows gamers to disable trophy notifications during gameplay.

Update: The 4.45 firmware update has been taken down from the site. Sony Computer Entertainment is currently fixing the problem. Users are advised not to update their PS3s until further notice.

Problems are arising with Sony's latest update to the PS3, according to comments on the official PlayStation forum .

The new firmware update may brick your console; beware!

Several user comments on the PlayStation forum have stated that the latest 4.45 update is causing a lockdown on their consoles. User JadeTreeInWind, for example, said that after the PS3 logo was on display post update, the crossbar menu would not show up. The user tried restarting the console, but the same problem still persisted.

Reports on the thread stated that PS3s over 500GB were affected by the error. One of the main features of the new update is to allow users to disable trophy notifications during gameplay.

GameSpot has reached out to Sony for comment and will update this article as more information surfaces.

I would like if Sony does with trophies the same thing Microsoft did with achievements. Like when you see the trophy pop up, you push the PS button and it takes you straight to the trophy description....

This is how Sony has me updating my PS3;

Step 1.  Wait at least one week before updating firmware.

Step 2.  Have console plugged into APC backup incase of power failure.

Step 3.  Unplug usb devices...remove any discs from tray...sometimes I will turn of my PC so no media servers are connecting.

Step 4.  Update Via USB after downloading firware through wired connection to PC.

Step 5. After update restart PS3.

Step 6.  Restart PS3 again.

Step 7. Put a disc in and play it for 2 minutes then restart PS3 again.

So there you have it...this is how I pretty much update my ps3 every time now...there are many different reasons on why I update this way but Sony has pretty much forced me too...I would recommend that at the very least you should update via usb NOT wifi and remove the disc before installing firmware.

SONY SAID:     Hey everyone,

We are aware of reports that the recent PlayStation 3 system software update (version 4.45) has caused the XMB to not display on a small number of PS3 systems. We have temporarily taken 4.45 offline and are investigating the cause of the problem. We will announce when the system update is available for download as soon as possible. We apologize for the inconvenience.

When we have updates, I'll add them to this thread. In the meantime, you can go to this open community thread to add your feedback:

If you dont think Sony does this shit on purpose then you people are deluding yourselves...Sony are experts in software code and DRM trojans etc...I would call this a "dry run" where you will see consoles mysteriously bricking around the PS4 launch window...similar to the "PS3 leap year bug".

This has not been the first time Sony has pulled a PS3 firmware update because of "accidentally" bricking consoles...If this company is really the White Knight then it sure cannot be trusted with PS4 firmware updates.

haaa haaa. wow, no wonder sony doesn't like online services. problem occurs with sony and...oops, not a big deal. but if this happened with the 360, it would be all over the world news. have fun playing with your bricks

im not saying i paid $40... but that's the listed retail price for anyone stupid enough to not get it free right now.. i got it on PC as part of THQ bundle for $25 for like 15 games and free this week on PS+...  im not a big fan of the series, but free is free...

One more thing: Even if something worse happens, remember that Sony tried to mitigate the situation in the past ( hacking problems ), with the most professional actions possible, and I even got 2 full games for free after all !

I Trust Sony !

Soo.. this update actually turns ps3's into a paperweight? no way round it? if so thats just fucked up, and sony should offer to replace said ps3's with new ones.

Funny but this is why always online is good. You are able to stream from the cloud, get automatic updates downloaded automatically in the background access your profile from any x1 console (and have a cable provider service all in one!). Sony can't even make updates work correctly (not to mention prevent hackers from stealing  all of your financial information.). This is why Sony isn't doing always online simply put they can't handle the volume and since there customers fan boys have been burned in the past its no wonder they are up in arms about online they don't know what a good xbox live experience is!!! this article needs to get way more coverage.

@hordaak yeah man take it easy on Sony, I mean they're only humans you know and you should also know that computing world is far from perfect, this is the first time that an update bricked your console and you are already throwing a fit over it and calling them ANTI-CONSUMER

@hordaak geez, i'm sure they did this on purpose.  not really "anti consumer" etc.

@liandrikonflict Yawn, tired old BS. It seems to be an issue for systems over 500gb, i.e. non standard systems.

yearssomuch

@hordaak HAH. You're so desperate to belittle Sony in whatever way you can that you try to act like this is at all comparable to Microsoft's awful RROD fiasco. The difference in the two situations is that Sony's issue will be fixed with a patch, whereas RROD completely ruined your console.

But it's cute watching you scour the comments section of articles on GameSpot, in your endless crusade to show how loyal you are to Microsoft. Jesus, you're pathetic man.

@hordaakMS fanboys...well, my 360 works...but at least its not a PS3. but yeah, it got that red ring of death. its a horrible mess. yup...i'm not gaming right now. nope...but yeah, getting back to Sony...yeah it sucks alright. what...its still not working? nah, thats ok. yeah...like i was saying..that Sony..what its working.....wait...no, its still got that red ring. yep, Sony definitely sucks. my 360 brick is better, at least it got colors flashing at me. if it worked i would totally show you!!!

Now see how that works. Both consoles have their brand of problems. But I guess being a stupid fanboi is some how fun these days. *shrug*

and btw, my PS3 is working just fine and my PS2 still works after years of having it. But consoles break, updates can get screwy. these things can change but you'll still be a pathetic fanboi. lol!

@hordaak Damn dude, don't you ever give up? Whether it's Microsoft or Sony, you're all over the place, spouting your ridiculous propaganda for the X1, insisting that Microsoft is ran by saints and Sony is comparable to that of a turd.

Go get some sunshine, loser.

@dalua360 by the way i got 6 games in total because i had 4 accounts...at first i thought it wouldnt allow me but it did and i wonder how many people exploited that

@dalua360 2 free games? i got 4..multiple platforms..   but free is free, cant beat it...

slainta

@Gankstar_VX84 No, it is not a paper weight. One just needs to install the next update via USB in Safe Mode. Problem fixed. Actually it may happen that it could install the update from the Internet, since the issue is with the XMB and the installation is done through the "black screens" with white text… No need for replacement, it is just an OS failure.

@cash_eche You rage on about fanboys, yet three lines into your comment, you start endless praise for Xbone and Microsoft.

The penultimate example of irony.

If everyone had the update there would be a lot more lock ups. Because the PS3 doesn't force online we can avoid the update until the problem is fixed.

Dirkula

@cash_eche talk about fan boys ... think about what you just said always being online would have made it so everyone got this update and you're oh so perfect xbox isn't and you do know both of the new systems will have cloud for auto updates and blah blah blah right? and just cuz ppl play on playstation don't mean then don't know what a good xbox eperience is personally i've had the same on both.

Old?...4.45 firmware BS just happened 2 days ago...and it is not known forsure if ONLY 500 Gigs and up were "targeted"...keep living in lala land and wearing your rose colored glasses that blind you from the truth that Sony runs its company mafia like and will do whatever it takes to make more profit...including bricking systems so the sheep buy new ones or they pay $200 to send it to Sony to get it fixed without waranty...

Search;

Sony BMG ROOTKIT SCANDAL;

Yes your sweet sweet company insalled Rootkits on its unsuspecting customers...OOOPS!...either way this company cannot be trusted to give proper firmware updates that are forced upon the users or they cant play online.

I hope you are right....  it's just sad that this happened to begin with. My system was perfect up until this "stability" upgrade..

liandrikonflict
liandrikonflict

@Henrique2324 It really doesnt matter since its pretty much a FACT that update 4.45 bricks systems...This has happened before...and will sure as hell happen again in the future with their track record...like I said...this company cannot be trusted giving proper firmware updates...rendering your $400 machine into a paperweight.

You are playing Russian roulette every time you update your PS3...add to that PS4 systems and PS4 updates coming your way in the near future.

Henrique2324
Henrique2324

@liandrikonflict @Henrique2324 Nowhere is it stated that 500 gb PS3s are exclusively affected. There is no "targeted" audience. If you're going to go rambling on and on about silly corporate conspiracies, at least get your facts straight.
