PS3 controller dubbed Sixaxis

Sony announces foreign prices, release dates for newly named motion-sensing controllers, Blu-ray remotes, and memory card readers.

If there's one thing gamers and fashion designers should be able to agree on, it's the importance of accessorizing. But what used to be a trifling purchase where even first-party controllers topped out at around $20 is getting more expensive with the next generation of consoles. Microsoft's wireless Xbox 360 controller retails for $49.99. Nintendo announced last month that its Wii controller will retail for $39.99, with the analog stick attachment running an extra $19.99 on top of that.

The Sixaxis.

Now Sony Computer Entertainment has tipped its hand on next-gen peripheral pricing, in Japan at least. The company today released a list of PS3 peripherals and their prices. First up, it was revealed that spare wireless controllers--now officially dubbed Sixaxis controllers in a nod to their motion-sensing capabilities--will go on sale next to the console November 11 at a cost of 5,000 yen (about $42) each. It will also have a 30-hour battery life, according to Sony. A memory card adapter, suitable for reading PlayStation and PlayStation 2 memory cards, will also be released on launch day for 1,500 yen (around $12).

Additionally, a remote control to take advantage of the console's Blu-ray functionality will slightly trail the PS3 launch. It will be released in Japan on December 7 and will cost 3,600 yen (roughly $30).

Sony has not yet confirmed the Sixaxis name or peripheral pricing for the US market. However, in late August, the company did register the word "Sixaxis" with the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

I hated rumble, so I really don't care. But hopefully the prices in Japan will indicate that the controller will be $40 or so.

i am very dissapointed about this sixaxis controller, sure it has motion sensors, but the vibration is gone and that sux, and how manny games will be there that ll be played with motion sensing. this controllere is just a dualshock 2 with shock gone. they should have atleast changed the looks of the controller . the contoller shown at e3 2005 looked awesome . dont know why sony sticked with the old controller for the ps3i

i think dualshock was better than sixaxis

"2nd.... You cant say Sixaxis is a bad name cause thats what the controller can do. If you passed gr.11 math then you know what it means." If you REALLY passed grade 11 math you would know that THREE axes define 3-D space. In any case, this controller really doesn't compare to the Wiimote because the Wiimote is more based on its relation to the screen and the Sixaxis is based on its own movement through space. For example, the Wiimote can be rotated and used to point at the screen, meaning there is minimal arm movement. However, the Sixaxis requires that you physically move the controller up and down, left and right, etc., instead of simply rotating it to get control. This means a lot more arm movement, meaning Sixaxis users really are going to wear themselves out a lot faster than Wiimote users. This further implies that PS3ers are probably just going to use standard analog-stick control, effectively meaning that they lost rumble for nothing.

MasterManiac wrote:" i'd rather have rumble before stupid motion sensing. I think its a cover up for the whole dual shock law suit. what were they thinking getting rid of rumble." I'l tell ya what they were thinking . . maybe nintendo was on to something. It's kind of funny that their controller came out after the Wii's controller. I agree though, I'd rather have a more intense rumble than motion sensing as standard. You'd think they could come up with a more elaborate rumble. One that would simulate getting hit on the left or right . . something like that. No I'm not a Nintendo Fanboy. I'd like a PS3, but my wallet can only pay for a Wii for this Christmas as they should be plentiful and cheap (I won't have to pay price gougers on ebay my first born child, like I would have to do for a PS3.) Maybe next year, when they are actually on store shelves . . 400,000 for all of North America? What were they thinking? Yeah Yeah, I know the PS3 Hardware kicks butt, but my 6 year old doesn't know that yet. He'll see the Wii (with it's slitghtly better graphics than the gamecube, motion sensing game, and I'll live with the virtual console "old school" - Hello Turbo Graphics 16 - I always wanted one of those) and think he's got something great. Meanwhile dad can wait for availability and lower prices. Think I'll wait for the PS4 to come out, then get a PS3 used on eBay.

i'd rather have rumble before stupid motion sensing. I think its a cover up for the whole dual shock law suit. what were they thinking getting rid of rumble. Rumble really makes the game come alive. Its going to be real stupid in war games when you get shot and you can't feel it. I'd rather have the ps3 release be postponed so they can re-do the mechanics of the controller and figure out how to make the rumble feature work with motion sensing. COME ON SONY!!

I don't care what they call it as long as I can turn it off and use the thumb sticks to move around instead of the gimmicky six-axes movement.

---This controller is moition sensored and if you go on youtube and type ps3 controller you can see it fuction motion sensored and they used it on the game WarHawk. They flew the plane using the motion and direction of the controller. This is something like Nintendo Wii. The only difference of the controller is that it doesnt have vibration on it because it will interfere with the motion sensor. ---- you have to laugh at the fact that sony claim rumble and motion sensors conflict, when nintendo can do it with no problems at all, AND they throw in a light-gun feature AND a speaker in the controller. oh yeah, AND the controller has non-volatile ram for avatar storage. Sony are a joke

Sixaxis?....man Sony is PATHETIC! All they do is mock the other system's inovations, turn around and start announcing their "fake" technologies. Wii has a motion controller and then Sony makes their controller "motion Sensitive"...bunch of fakes! So then nintendo names their controller which I don't really like either and now Sony is doing the same....If Microsoft adds spinners to their 360's I wonder what sony would do?...: SONY: We bring u the PS3! Not only will u get a chance to play games and toast bread at the same time, this electrical-guzzling beast will boast Sony's patent-pending "Sony air cooling Spinners". Through our OWN research we invented the Cooling spinners to keep your hunk a junk room temperature. Spinners, screws, and instruction manual sold separately some assembly required! Fine print: -----[Spinners do not cool, PS3 may catch on fire]-------------------------------------

I dont really think it matters what they call it. I mean when you play PS2 do you say "Pass me a DualShock" or what ever. no, you say pass me a controller.

I just wanna know if the PS3 (PlayStation 3) will be able to connect to a monitor buy buying a VGA adapter? I don't have enough money to buy a true HD TV but enough for a high resolution monitor. The X-Box 360 works and looks fine on the one I have right now and speakers working well. Since the PS2 (PlayStation 2) could support the speakers I'm guessing so will the PS3.

bassplaya1

i love how people complain about this systems price. they must fail to realize that buying all the addons for a 360 that the ps3 has will basically equal the ps3s price. wireless adapter? $100. controller recharger? $40. 60 gig hard drive? oh wait, the 360 only has a TWENTY gig. buy all those things and you spend at least 600 after taxes. and the ps3 has all these things built in. dont get me wrong, i own a 360 and will end up gettinga ps3 and wii, its just i dont COMPLAIN about the price of things. so shut youre damn mouths about the price of this system. the only cheap system out there will be the wii. bottom line.

As for the controller....Ultraspank is 100%right, good name or bad name, it will do the same, it could be called RainbowGayPride, or DemonikDoomBadA$$, it will do the exact same thing

nyohnk

personally, i think it will be close...Xbox 360 will have been out for 1 year when the Wii and PS3 launch(for better or for worse)- They have a bunch of games coming out around the launches so sales on games might go up, but how can you actually determine a winner? they are all different....for people who want great shooters, might look to the 360, those who want to relax and have fun, maybe the Wii, and those who want sports games, driving games, and RPGs maybe the PS3, but what i dont understand, is why bash each other? We all play videogames dont we? Besides its VideoGames, not Gang Wars or something....

Ultraspank
Ultraspank

$40 is the same price you would have paid for a decent ps2 or xbox wireless controller, and they didn't rumble either. Now ps3 controllers can tilt... The price is fair so quit complaining about that. The name? Who honestly cares what the name is? Did you go around the past 5 years saying "hey man, pass me a dual shock."? Don't be retarded and trite about such trivial things.

I can't wait since the price drop I used the extra money for stuff like this. Its a bit pricey but so is the console. I had a tilt force controller back in the day and I used it on my PS2 until it broke. (sad day it was) I'm glad the fan feed back is somewhat being heard. Now only if they listened more. I'm still waiting for katamari damacy to use the eye toy.

That's pretty sick, for all the next gen consoles. An Xbox 360 wireless controller in BC costs almost as much as a game, and the Wiimotes sound like they'll be even more expensive.

yixingtpot

i think it's a great controller of course, the best overall design still. Sixaxis, maybe they will abbreviate it and call it PSA or something... PS3 is the only system for me, but i do think that many parents will buy their kids the Wii, so i think the Japanese who created the modern console craze will end up a tag team win on the XBOX2 in the end.

hendersonle

1st. I am a big Playstation fan i those who say Ps3 will win the console war in fact won't probably happen i suppose. Either way Xbox loses again, but Nintendo Wii will win the console war because of the low price for the console and is mostly meant for little kids. Ps3 and xbox is mostly for teenagers and adults since it doesnt have those kiddy games like mario and etc, but ps3 will come in 2nd place i predict and Xbox360 comes in last again. This is my opinion and please don't flame. 2nd.... You cant say Sixaxis is a bad name cause thats what the controller can do. If you passed gr.11 math then you know what it means.

shotokan_42
shotokan_42

I think it's a good idea, however, it sounds very complicated. Especially since the memory card adapter might have problems.

hendersonle

GameGuy642003 "it looks just like a ps2 controller, no difference seen?" "except for wireless feature, but thats nothing new." This controller is completely different They call it Sixais because of the 6 axis 3 planes or something like that and you'll learn it in gr. 11 math i heard this on ps3land forums. This controller is moition sensored and if you go on youtube and type ps3 controller you can see it fuction motion sensored and they used it on the game WarHawk. They flew the plane using the motion and direction of the controller. This is something like Nintendo Wii. The only difference of the controller is that it doesnt have vibration on it because it will interfere with the motion sensor.

It's spelt the same way backward as it is forward. Not a terrible idea, but it's still not a really catchy name unless you notice that. Clever, maybe too clever.
