PS3 backward compatibility marred

Sony's PlayStation 3 is encountering problems playing approximately 200 PlayStation, PlayStation 2 games; software updates expected.

When Microsoft's Xbox 360 was released almost a year ago, one of the knocks on the system was that it wasn't fully backward compatible with original Xbox games. The 360, which uses a different CPU and GPU from the original Xbox, can play some Xbox games through software emulation. However, the emulation has so far only been applied to a few hundred titles.

Sony, too, had planned to go the backward-compatibility route. To avoid the emulation pitfalls encountered by Microsoft, the company put PlayStation and PlayStation 2 hardware inside the PlayStation 3. However, it appears that even this approach to backward compatibility is having its problems.

On its Japanese Web site, the electronics giant has said that some issues are arising when attempting to run certain PlayStation and PS2 games on the PS3, according to Bloomberg. Sony has not stated how many games are being affected, but Reuters claims approximately 200 games in the PS and PS2 catalog have some issues.

A Sony spokesperson told GameSpot, "We are aware that a select number of titles have compatibility issues but these problems will be fixed with a software upgrade that will be available in the near future."

A Web site has been set up for Japanese users to see which games have compatibility issues and which may not work due to other problems. Titles with problems include Final Fantasy XI, Silent Hill 2, Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams, and Tekken 5.

The console was released in Japan on November 11 and promptly sold out. Sony will have approximately 400,000 PS3s available for the system's North American launch this Friday, and the company expects the backward-compatibility issue to also affect those units.

I love how vague you are about the "issues". Compairing 360 compatibility from when it launched to the PS3's launch is a huge joke.

Ok people, make a huge deal over 200 games not working on the PS3. So this information came from japan they said... you have any idea how many PS1 and PS2 games there are in total in japan? You probably can't count that high. So yea 200 games... for all we know every last one of them could be japan only. Even still its likely only 50-100 of those games' US equivalent, if they exist, are likely to have the same problem. You face several different issues when taking into account backwards compatibility. It was highly likely there would be a few games that were missed. Assuming its a software issue, which it most likely is, it can be fixed easily. Have any of you had any PS1 or PS2 games fail to work? Even if you did... it would be what... one game from your entire collection? Maybe 2 if you are a really hard core collector. Anyways yea... thats all i have to say. Your flames towards sony are rather uncalled for. Yes I like playstation, I like sony. I also like nintendo and sega. Microsoft... eh, they can make some good games but their consoles are nothing more than a computer crammed into a console. Nothing innovative at all. They have my respect but I'm not interested.

So much for full backwards compatibility. There goes another supposed advantage against the Xbox 360.

Man-Oh-Man i hope all my PS2 games are compatible with the ps3, though i'm not bothered about PSOne i only want to play online on my PS2 games.

This is why I don't love to get a console at launch, even though I would want to play the new games as soon as I could

Are there any American website with a list of ps1 and ps2 games that do and don't work on the ps3. Iwould be very thankful if someone gave me the website.

the console world is just like the pc hardware, there are games that runs great on nvidia's graphics and there ore those who runs great on ati's. it all depends on current hardware and the programming if the programming is bad the game will probably be a bad looking game with lots of bugs. now if u have a game thats out for ps3 and xbox 360 the consoles will handle the games diffrently so much depends on how the programmers programs the game to use the hardware availible. oither stuff can be taken in consideration like which format were the game originaly planned to launch and secondly some do put out lazy ass conversions of game like Quake 4 for the xbox 360. Quake 4 looked bad and the fps was bad on the xbox 360 especially the slow-downs. CoD3 looking better on the xbox 360 could all depend on that the programmers favoverde xbox 360 over PS3 and then again it could all depend on a lazy convertion to ps3 from whatever version of CoD3 out on xbox 360

timothyt was right about errors on the ps2, that is why i bought an xbox 360, i did not want to play on a console that always screws up. if the ps3 survives more than 6 months without blowing up, i will buy it.

ShadyElf, the PS2 had much worse launch problems, in that the systems would die shortly after you bought them (specifically the DVD drive, ominously, since this time around the BluRay drive is the "new" thing). Sony handled that situation terribly, and eventually had to be sued in a class-action lawsuit to fix the broken consoles (which sucked for me because I had already used my extended warranty from EB Games to get a new unit). You can read about the ugliness here http://www.ps2settlement.com/ and at wikipedia here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PS2#Disc_Read_Error At least for me, I'm waiting until these first units go through about 6 months to a year of "burn-in" time before I drop $600. At least with the 360 I was able to buy a 2 year extended warranty from Microsoft for about $50. These extended warranties from Best Buy, Gamestop, etc. are great unless you need to use them, only then do you learn that the new replacement unit isn't covered by the original extended warranty and they try to sell you ANOTHER warranty(!) I'd be interested to see if Sony is offering their own extended warranty similar to what MS is doing - has anyone heard? They didn't with the PS2 so I'm not overly hopeful, but that would be the only way I'd buy an unproven $600 game system with a stock 90 day warranty... Especially from Sony who burned us all on the PS2 support.

Meh, i'm not getting any next gen system until i've seen them compete against each other for atleast 6 months or so...or i'll probably just game on the pc. But did the PS2 have this many launch problems?

It seriously think Gamespot is under Microsoft's payroll, without trying to be obvious about it. Why? Because I have not seen a positive article about the PS3 since, well I can't remember. While it's open to debate whether Sony is doing it to themselves or not, the fact is... Gamespot had this story posted months ago... I can't find on their site obviously, but does anyone remember 6 months ago or so they had an article posted on their main news about how the PS3 is having backwards compatibility issues? Why post the same article twice, if we already have seen this info then we know. It reminds me of elections where certain parties hide scandal news, despite the people in danger from it, til the last minute. So GS just re-releases this info close to PS3's launch as per orders from MS to discourage PS3 sales, anything they can dig up I guess. As for backwards compatibility, I play PSX on my PS2 all the time, and some games don't emulate on that either. I get over it. Thankfully we have the luxury of firmware and wifi now that the PS2 didn't have, and just like my PSP is being constantly upgraded thanks to Sony, I believe my PS3 will be too, but if it isn't, big whoop. I'm going to be buying my PS3 next summer, and a Wii for Christmas. Meanwhile, my X360 is played solely by my brother, as I am too busy with FFXII, FFIII, and my ongoing endeavors in FFXI.

"I guess sony couldn't have thought about testing this before releasing it?" You can only devote so much time and money testing a console before you can reach your set deadline. I mean, for the PS3, it was either release it when it was supposed to be released and allow any issues to go with it that may be corrected with a later patch, or hold back on the release and allow the Wii and Nintendo to get a jump on you, while you spend more money for testing. It's a business, first and foremost.

JediCrusader

I myself missed out on a plethora of games on the PS2 and PS1 since for years because I did not have the money to buy so many games spread over many different systems. One of the big selling points for me was jumping on the bandwagon and grabbing a PS3 to get all the next gen and go back for all the RPGs that the Playstation has a monopoly over. This development would be what everyone should expect on a release system, so I will wait for the second wave of machines to come out.

For those who say why buy PS3 if you want to play PS1 games. When you want it and dont have it you sing a different tune. I for example may want to replay my Resident Evil games. Why would one have 2 different consoles by their TV and having to unplug and replug every time you want to play a game thats been made 10 years ago.

Knoxximus

Yeah, big whoop. If you own any of those incompatible games, then chances are you own a fully compatible PS2 to play them on. The PS3 doesn't upscale anyway, so if you REALLY want to feel better, get you a PS2 wireless logitech controller. At least you'll still have rumble!

ADollins, LOL stfu dude you didn't have 6 pre-orders and you are just another fan-boy stop lying to act cool and think you know what your talking about. Console wars this time is ridiculous if ya'll think the PS3 is going to crash and burn you're high...Of course it didn't have a good launch it's still in basically Beta form they rushed the damn system totally shoudla waited another 4-6 months and had a more solid release but the Sony fan-boys wouldn't of liked that but I'm not worried one bit about the PS3 in less then a year it will be up to tip top shape and the graphic frame-rates won't be shuddering like they are in early games ...the devs just need to perfect the kits and programming these launch games I dont think anyone expected a great launch and who cares about launch anyways cause 90% of the people who want the damn system cant get it cause theres not enough lol...so by the time I get my PS3 in march/april Im totally gonna expect bugs to be fixed and better games to be out and there will be there's no denying that.

This is not a problem what so ever who the hell is going to be in a hurry to play old PS2/PSX games on here anyways...and it's not like every title is not working or something then we might have a serious problem...but as it stands and as stated this is an easy fix that can be just fixed with a software update and downloaded onto the HDD.

looks like sony was lying the whole time and they knew it. only the general public finds out a week prior to launch...how funny. and they want to bash microsoft about the same thing...the only difference, sony had an extra year to fix this problem, and couldn't.

Trogeton

THose are facts that Sony PSP put up though, dont get stumped because someone showed some true specs, that is one thing that you cant leave out, none of the microsoft fanboys put up the differences, because it would show that the ps3s specs were superior, so one of the sony ones, basically revealed the visual proof of why the ps3 is better technically

theKSMM

The thing that I keep wondering is how much additional cost comes from basically equipping the PlayStation 3 with the hardware capabilities of of not one, but additional consoles (PSOne and PS2). I'd gladly sacrifice backwards compatibility if it would reduce the cost of the console by a couple hundred dollars. There is part of me that's curious to see how PS2 games will look when they get the high-definition treatment; the same graphics that looked fine at 20-27 inches look a lot less appealing at 40-plus inches. But I would still think that with the power of the Cell processor, the backward compatibility could have been implemented with a cost-saving software implementation. Ironic that they didn't chose that route since they may have to end up fixing the broken hardware implementation with a software update anyway.

partytimekegs
partytimekegs

The issue is going to be dealt with soon I would bet. Considering this is a very important time for Microsoft and Sony. However, I don't see the use for backwards capability. Especially if its taking up room inside my console as extra hardware. Forget the past, im only interested in the future of next gen gaming. There isn't a definite "Xbox360 is better than PS3" or "PS3 is better than everything". Sure, the PS3 has amazing hardware but it's development tools aren't that easy to use. Yet if you were to honestly work extremely hard at making a game on the PS3, and pour your heart into it.. your going to see one amazing piece of software. When it comes down to it the console wars are about taste. Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony all have their strong points it's just how you play or what console you have stuck with that really matters. One thing I hate though is when people bash the blazes out of the 360 for Xbox live being a charged service. It's near fifty dollars a year. I don't know about you but I don't even have a job and I can pay for that. Gold all the way. I will be getting all three systems though, don't know how yet but it will be done.

Okay it's comming down to the line, fanboys. Which line are you going to stand in. 1) Nintendo's Line it looks like they will still have a console for me. 2) Sony's Line it looks like they will sell out before I even get to the head of the line. 3) Oh well I couldn't get a sony so damn I will just buy that 360. 1, 2, or 3? Yes the PS3 is impressive, however it's not that impressive unless you have the infrastructure for it. I have obtained 6 pre-orders, and I intend to flip all 6 this is how much I think the PS3 blows. Guess who I have to thank for my most profitable christmas EVER, SONY fanboy's. They have overhyped this PS3 thing for so long that they belive the PS3 will solve world hunger, bring resolution to the IRAQ war, and untold number of things. Unfortunatly it's just a freaking console, and a overhyped one at that with the kitchen sink thrown in for good measure. Just becuse sony is throwing the kitchen sink in this console is not going to make it great, you need great games, inovative games, and most of all you need inventory of consoles to sell. Well sony has yet dropped the ball yet again by overhyping and under delivering, now it's the PS3 is not completly backwards compatible. Don't get me wrong I was really excited about the PS3 when I first started to hear about it, and doing research on it, however I have been turned off by sony's execution of the PS3, I really thought the PS3 was going to OWN the rest of the consoles. Watching what Sony has done with the PS3, and it's like watching the republicans rape the american public yeah they had good intentions at first, but then the greed sets in. I have no argument the PS3 is a red herring value for 600.00 but to use it you really need alot of infrastructure HDTV with 1080P that alone is 3,000+ dollars 42" or larger do you have that? Surround Sound $250-$800+ do you have that? Oh and don't forget those cables that will cost you more another $50.00 at walmart (best price I have seen for a 6' cable), and don't forget the optical cable if you don't have one. Yeah you can play the PS3 on a regular TV but why? Those that argue that the PS3 is also a BLUE RAY player yes it is but don't forget the performance of first gen Blue Ray players, and HD-DVD players which take upto a minute for a movie to start up, if your lucky. Also the picture quality of Blue Ray is crap. It's not the blue ray spec, on paper it looks phenominal however in reality it falls far short. It's a fault of encoding single layer discs, with MPEG 2, instead of VC1 or MPEG 4. So even with the superior numbers that sony throws around BD is sucking a**. They cannot make a cheap dual layer BD. Additionally the Cell processor is a pain to develop for so games are going to be $10.00 more on the average than the rest of the consoles. I think the PS3 is a better tech demo than a real console. I wouldn't even call it a console becuse it really is a Multimedia hub. Why do you think sony is having such a tough time producing these things?? Yes I feel sorry for the poor saps that end up with zero day PS3 becuse you will not even see the true potential for the console for at least another 2 years, and when it does hit, there will be a better XBOX, and a better Nintendo. I'm sorry, I do like the PS2 but I just think the PS3 has lost it's focus on what makes a great system, and that is not some tech demo, but a well refined game system, like the PS2, and don't forget the PS3 will not even really be released till next year for most of the world. Fanboy kids right off the bat I can hear it now "Dude your Getting a WII", or "Dude your getting a 360", becuse of price, and even if it isn't a price issue with your parents, then they aren't probably game savy enough to scrounge up a PS3 unless they buy one of my FLIPED ones of EBAY, for a rediculus price. Yes this does it for me, I would have kept one PS3 assuming I get all my preorders. However they are all gone, I ain't keeping a single one becuse the only two justifications I had left for this console was It would play blue ray discs, and also play my old PS2 discs, becuse my PS2 is crapping out. While the developers figure out how to make a MUST HAVE game for the PS3. Isn't that funny buying a PS3 to play old PS2 games & Blue ray, hmm there in lies the rub for me, becuse isn't buying a PS3 about buying unique experiences none of the other consoles offer. Well I can get madden on X360 and even the new Resitance Fall Of Man will come out on the XBOX 360, and it will be almost identical. I just cannot belive people camp out for this.
