PS2 discontinued in Japan

Sony no longer shipping prolific system in island nation following launch in March 2000; no word on halts for other regions.

by

Sony has ceased shipping PlayStation 2 units in Japan, according to a Famitsu report (via Kotaku). Once the current stock in the island nation is gone, it will not be resupplied.

The PS2 launched in Japan during March 2000 and to date has shipped more than 150 million units worldwide. More than 10,000 titles are available for the console, and Sony has sold in excess of 1.52 billion PS2 games since launch.

PS2 units continue to be produced and sold in other regions. No mention was made concerning when this may change. Though Sony has ceased PS2 shipments in Japan, the company continues to develop titles for the platform.

Haven't used my PS2 for ages anyway. Switched fully to PC gaming :) Bought GameBackupSystem to backup all my games on to my PC and downloaded an emulator. Best thing ever. And if you get a PS2 to USB controller port it gets even better :P

End of an era to be sure.  While we're now technically two generations beyond (with the Wii U representing the 8th Gen), I still find myself returning to the ol workhouse.  I think a big part of that stems from the fact that I'll bet I've gotten close to 30 games these past couple years for $8 and under.  Can't beat it.

I think is safe to say PS2 was the most successful console ever made. By the way, it is still largely produced and sold here in Brazil.

I have at least 3 times more PS2 games than I have PS3 games.  Its time is almost finished.  Hopefully the PS4 will be fully backwards-compatible with PS1, PS2 and PS3 games.  RIP, PS2...I will never forget you.  ...Yeah, I know they still make them in the US (for now) - but it's time is coming soon.

I bought three PS2 way back in it's glory years.  I have a PS2 slim left and over a hundred games in the attic.  Many PS2 moments and memories with them games.  Looking back, the first PS2 i bought was bundled with Gran Turismo and the first purchase game i bought was Final Fantasy X.  It was a fun trip with the PS2 for all of us. It's time to ride towards the sunset old friend, farewell.

13 years... The end of an era.

I think, with the death of PS2, died many other things. Some bad, But also alot of good.

I'll miss that amazing piece of entertainment. I'm a PC gamer, and I acknowledge the PS2 as an amazing machine. Little power, Many qualities.

God of War II was released for this and still looks gorgeous. What is wrong with this industry?

Wasn't it already discontinued in the UK? I haven't seen any in stores or on major online retailers for a very long time, maybe even years.

Farewell old friend. I will still keep a ps2 hooked up though. Just too many great games to revisit. Definitely one of the best consoles ever made!

More than 10,000 titles available? Holy shit, that is downright ridiculous yet more awesome at the same time. How big of a PS2 section would you need in your store to have at least 1 copy of each title? RIP PS2, you made it a long, long ways.

It's the end of an era, ladies and gentlemen. Many a terrible high school days were drowned out in the evenings through consecutive listens of Pearl Jam's 'Ten' and 'Vs' albums and of course holding my DualShock 2, lost in worlds far better than the one we live in.

This deserves a moment of silence...

This is one of many reasons why I don't play games on Consoles,, the technology is dead-end, the whole ecosystem is hugely flawed, when the production ceased, then you're done, and you're losing a lot of your gaming library.

I still had many backlog like StarCraft, FreeSpace 2 or Deus Ex on PC,

at least I still could play those with moddable enhanced graphic and backward compatible with today OS, and honestly I'm glad missing a lot of PS2 titles, or else I will crying out loud, lol

It is very sad news to hear this. And more than likely, the other regions will more than likely follow suit. The ps2 has lasted 12 years. That is very impressive and says alot about the system, It is a gem and one that in my opinion wont be duplicated by another console with the same success.

Thanks for giving us a system like the PS2 and the games that were on it.

If it's still selling, why would u stop producing it?

But i guess coming from the company which sold it's latest (and greatest?) console at a loss, it probably makes perfect sense!

No word about other regions, aka, no comment, meaning there is still a lot more of a price hike that can garner revenues for this outdated system...

People will still be developing games for it in 2020, if the Dreamcast is any indication.

i still remember playing Jak and Daxter and Ratchet and Clank on this thing, those were like my fave 2 game series to play on there. Just over all a fantastic game console, introduced a lot of new things to the gaming world, plus DVD and CD quality is still kick-ass quality.

An outstanding gaming console getting a raw deal by Sony in its own nation. Sad state of affairs Sony!

PS2 has sold more than 150million units while the current most popular console the Xbox 360 has only sold around 70 million units to date. That's like half!

@marlobc Probably, why else discontinue it when it still gets a lot of sales and game releases

@tightwad34 It has enough games in it's library for 2 generations with room to spare.

tgwolf
tgwolf

@AshTrai I know, right? The reason most likely has to do with the fact that there are JUST ENOUGH people that wouldn't buy what is now almost two generations old and that is enough of a loss that the cost for marketing and production would net a loss...That's the ONLY REASON I CAN THINK OF, and besides, that was JUST IN JAPAN!

tgwolf

@TheArcade Well I'm glad I don't have to buy another one, and no I don't plan on getting rid of mine, too many good games--HATING LIFE, AREN'T YA, XBOX??

@game_more The Nintendo DS is the current most popular console if you're including handhelds, and it sold 150 million units worldwide too :P

@Venatorcruiser @jark888 Nah, there is no game in development in Japan either, aside from that one FFXI expansion (which is done by SE). The article is wrong.

@hippiesanta @Ladiesman17 Me too.

Ladiesman has no clue, hardware is still working and you can fix it for years to come. Just because you can mod your PC games to work (which by the way, isn't always guarranteed), doesn't mean I can't still load up my FF12 game with the press of a button! The same goes for my PS1 by the way, which is even older.
