PS Vita software will not be region-locked

Sony publishing president Shuhei Yoshida confirms new handheld will not be content-restricted by location.

Sony devoted nearly all of its Tokyo Game Show press conference to the PlayStation Vita, but one omitted bit of news concerning the device was revealed today in 140 characters or less. In a post to his Twitter feed, Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida confirmed that the PS Vita will not be region locked.

The PS Vita won't be region-locked.

After a Twitter user asked Yoshida whether it had been confirmed that the PS Vita would be region free, the Sony executive replied with a simple, "Yes, it is." Yoshida did not indicate whether the PS Vita will be open through just physical media, or also digital content. Sony had not responded to GameSpot's request for clarification as of press time.

Currently, with the PlayStation 3 and PSP, physical media is released region-free, allowing games published in one country to be played without hassle in another. However, Sony's digital strategy restricts content to the region in which it is released, with access being determined by the region of a user's PlayStation Network profile.

As announced earlier this week, the PS Vita will launch alongside 26 games in Japan on December 17. Sony expects to release its newest gaming hardware in Europe and North America sometime in early 2012. For more information, check out GameSpot's previous coverage of the PS Vita.

See, this is one of the reasons Sony is the best of the 3 major gaming corporations. Take notes Nintendo and MS

DAMN good news. I won my PSP before they were out in the UK and it was imported from the US. As cool as it was it meant I had to import all the UMD films.. Great move Sony.

thanks zidan4000: but i think sony should think on memory part and battery part.as i heard from one of sony resources who work there.this is there strategy that first will see the response of psv in current form .if it is good they will go with it otherwise they will look for low down price of memory and also do some tweaks for battery life for eg when 3ds price came down not much negative feedback was gone from gamers .so sony continue with the price tag otherwise they defiantly go with price drop.lets hope price will drop for memory and battery pack if negative feedback goes from gamers.

That is why the PSV is already better than the 3DS more choices of games to play.

UMD are still important, seem like they want complete control over all your gaming. I can only expect future law suits, and hackers attacking everyone. :(

Dragon's Crown is going to be playable on the PS3 and the PSV. I'll be able to start where I stopped at home and bring the Vita to work so I can keep playing during my lunch hour. It's probaly the only reason why I'm getting the Vita, because of this feature. However, the more I read up on the Vita the more I think I'll be getting the most out of my money with it. They better keep up with flash updates for web browsing though.

@decoy1978: I have the same question for over than 10 years. Back in the day there was a technical reason, the PAL- NTSC incompatibility, but this reason doesn't exist anymore. So there is something else...

Still, the price for the vita in aus is way to high compared to the US price. ESPECIALLY when the aussie dollar is high. May as well buy the system from the US because it aint region locked, saves so much money. I AM A CHAMP.

I doubt I'd import any games when I get a PSP but this is very good news. Oh and a message to all the lonely hackers out there: don't try and kill this like you did with the PSP.

@coolguyhero Actually you can use MicroSD on PSP , just buy a MicroSD Memory Stick Pro Duo adapter and attach the MicroSD cards in it and you got yourself cheap storage , I heard that it works up to 32Gb or something.

one thing i hate about Sony that they purposely dint allow external memory card we have to buy there memory card .2nd battery backup is of only 3 to 5 hours .they are trying to earn more using these 2 points.they should allow consumers to use external memory and battery life also be increased.otherwise they will loose some business .i dont say most of it but of course some.can anyone provide me sony email where i can give feedback.thanks

I can't seem to recall it, but WHY would something be region-locked? Whats the advantage of locking a product from country to country?

If it is only for physical media, its nothing new really. But if it's for digital media as well.. then this is really interesting news! That seems highly unlikely to me though..

Ya know, this is something ALL consoles and handhelds need to do. If I buy a legit copy of a game from another part of the world, I should be able to play it on any version of the exact same machine. This is great news. :)

region locks are such a pain im glad the PS3 isnt becuase demon souls took a year and a half after its release to come to the UK i would never been able to wait that long

I hope Nintendo decides to patch the 3DS to unlock it so we can import. If this proves successful to the Vita, Nintendo should follow suit. I understand their reservations about unlocking the 3DS because of piracy, but there has to be a way to block pirates without the 3DS being region locked.

More consoles need to be region-free. I cant tell you how many times Ive wanted a game, only to have it released exclusively in another region and have my system region locked.

Region locking is useful for manufacturers to ensure profitability and to ensure price differences due to exchange rates benefit them. This is a good thing by sony and I hope other manufacturers follow
