PS Vita software lineup planned to 2013

Sony publishing president says company will not be repeating PSP game library "mistake"; Hot Shots Golf tops Japanese launch sales.

by

Sony launched the PSP in March 2005, and one criticism that was leveled against the company during that window was the system's dearth of new games. With the PlayStation Vita having launched in Japan last week, Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida does not plan on having the company make that mistake again.

Japanese gamers were most concerned with hitting the links upon the PS Vita's debut.

"In the past we launched PSP and then shifted our attention to PS3 when that came on the horizon, which we now concede was a mistake," Yoshida said in an interview posted to the PlayStation Blog. "So with PS Vita we are working on this huge range titles and planning ahead for a constant supply of excellent games."

To that end, Yoshida said that Sony Worldwide Studios has "a fairly firm plan right up to 2013." The Sony executive noted that any changes to the schedule will only be additive, noting that the system allows developers to quickly release smaller titles such as Escape Plan and Sound Shapes.

Yoshida also briefly addressed the PS Vita's Japanese launch. Citing retailer data, Yoshida said Hot Shots Golf was the most popular of the 24 games available at launch. Bend Studios' Uncharted: Golden Abyss took the number two slot.

Earlier today, Enterbrain reported that 321,000 PS Vitas sold during the first 48 hours of availability in Japan. However, the launch wasn't without hiccups, as Sony Japan issued an open letter to gamers experiencing hardware malfunctions, specifically calling out system freezes, upside-down screen orientation, and PlayStation Network connectivity issues.

doesn't matter to me, Sony being second or third is also a good thing, they give us great exclusives. I hope they succeed.

Getting the PS Vita on Holiday of 2012. I'm sure by that time the system is already stable and hopefully homebrew enabled >:-)

Golf takes a lot of land.... Japan is very small.... Guess why the Wii-U will be very popular??? Tons of giddy Japanese girls will be giggling on playing golfing games and their boyfriends says "scoooore!" and gets ready to get laid. The Wii and the Wii-U iis a great pick-up line for girls. "hey I have a Wii in my place, wanna come over?"

I remember there being a plentiful amount of PSP games. It was just people kept wringing "Why does it have to be on the PSP? I don't want to buy a PSP" every time a good game came out on the system.

I wish Sony the best with their new handheld. I hope the multiplayer is much smoother than on the PSP. I can think of several games I would still be playing on it if the muiltiplayer was lag free.

I am actually scared of this system freezes, upside-down screen orientation, and PlayStation Network connectivity issues. :/

The only thing I really cant get over is the 3 hour battery life. This device is amazing and I will definitely get it, just a little disappointing. But I guess with the graphics this can produce, there is a downside. Hope some kind of battery extender comes out and is practical.

Is it too late to change the name to PSP2? I only have room for one ridiculously named device, and I already have a Wii.

The issues for PSN are that every time you start a game you get signed out, and the launch titles look awesome, hope this does well. @leeko_link It is coming to the Vita, coming out at US launch.

LittleBigPlanet Portable 2 better be coming for Vita. Hopefully we get new customizable features to create new innovative levels.

@shadowhunter0 : Personally once/if I get a Vita I will use my fingers anyway mainly because I am tired of losing/replacing styluses but I was just letting metalkitten know that it was an option.

That ModNation racers looks brilliant, I never did get it for the PS3 but it sure as hell looks a good buy for the Vita. Touchscreen also looks like a good addition to LBP, pushing and pulling backwards and forwards will undoubtedly add another whole angle to the game :) Oh my word and Fifa looks QUALITY!!! Vita looks immense basically :D

Vita owns hands down - make no mistake, it's a beast. I'm gonna get this just because it just looks so damned cool.

Where are the killer new games? Appears to be about as bad as the 3ds launch. Really need to have that must have game to make you really want to go out and buy a new system. I'll still hold off on up grading on both of them.

i expect vita to be a great success, the psp was the best handheld ever imo, it had many great and underrated games, but the biggest highlight was its ability to play ps1 classics, now that's what i want!!

this is good news, plus this also means that there wont be a ps4 for quite some time which is very fine by me.

@ d33pak001 PS Vita is a full fledged gaming device. How come you're comparing it to Android or iOS? Does not make any sense. Anyway, if you want a phone with great gaming experience I recommend SonyEricsson Xperia Play.

@d33pak001 actually it is very easy to choose if you are a hardcore gamer like me

@moviequest14 actually the vita doesn't have a stylus because it doesn't need it the touch screen works great without it and if you are worry about scratching or messing up the screen just put a screen protection on it they are only couple of bucks and they are worth it

Its a vry difficult thing to choose - an iOS device or Android or PS Vita???

@BloodMist mostly because your "fact" was an opinion. Plus, you just said that having weak games at launch was the same thing as having portable games that are almost as good as a console. Weak. p.s. I'm actually really excited for this.

@vega13mv because it's Japan, that's why. The Hot Shots Golf series is Japanese and Uncharted is Western (though both are Sony).

This really is a wait to see if it does well console, I stupidly bought a 3DS on release and well that's just sat in a corner for 4 months. This needs good solid games, which I'm not sure if the psp really got, I only ever had Square Enix titles for my PSP and a tekken nothing else.... I feel they really need to push serious third party support for it to do well.

There are so many restrictions on this thing that I'm not sure if I want it. Will have to wait and see...

Uh, you're releasing slightly inferior versions of what you can already get on a console. How is that not the same mistake?

I hope they get that problem with the vita fixed. From what I read on other sites it sounds like it's a widespread problem.

im a ps3 owner and love it as well as my psp i just have concerns regarding the vita psp sold well - but they didnt sell games well i think many will buy the vita but then just sit around waiting for the games like the psp and its a shame since japan actually had several rpgs i wanted but they never translated them as for stylus i never seen any on the vita - i hope ure right - but all videos i seen they use fingers on both sides makes me wonder about skins too...:S id love for vita to be a success but we dont have it in our hands yet nor games i want so its not a first day buy at all - the lil info we keep getting about it is just not good enough or its plain bad info not that i buy any game at first day (allright, the dslite and dsi i did - but thats cause they already had a gamelibrary)

moviequest14
moviequest14

@metalkitten : That is what worries me about the Vita, while I want it to succeed (psp was rather underrated) the only people I see wanting a Vita are ps3 owners...because otherwise most non-ps3 owners would rather get the more powerful, cheaper system with the original console titles that the Vita is trying to equal up to.And even then that is optimistically assuming all/most ps3 owners do buy a vita.I believe that the vita does have a stylus.

hardware issues:S golf as the best sold launch title? solid gamelineup - 2013??? (but what games? and hey thats far from now!) looking at the launch titles... sure the black and white looks interesting - if it was a part in an indie bundle for like 4 dollars... one game looks like the built in faceraider for the 3ds... some soundgame that also look very indie -are these actual full titles? as for the rest - i rather play them on my ps3... i can see a potentially really messy screen... and no more oily fingers or eating while playing - why not add something like a stulys or similar - the fingers are just not that great...nor precise yeah...ill wait for vita... just like i waited to get my psp when all games were limited editions and superscheap cause it just didnt sell that well in europe that said i still think vita will do well - but they need to provide more games, lower price and then translate all games from japan since they didnt with the psp and i missed tons of rpgs cause of that- not everyone wants the typical mainstream series u can play on ur ps3 anyway

quote : "a fairly firm plan right up to 2013." so does that mean they will drop support for it after that since the PS4 will probably be released then . lol

But the PSP library was interesting, although heavily relying on remakes or nostalgia-induced games. Maybe PS Vita will have more fresh content?

I would love to see a list of these games leading to 2013 lol. But as for the hardware issues not new electronic device is without its issues at release. Im sure they will be worked out before it even hits our shores here in NA.
