PS Vita only functions as PS4 controller for selected games

PlayStation Vita will only work as a PS4 controller if support has been specifically added.

by

Sony’s PlayStation Vita handheld will not work as a controller for all games on the PlayStation 4.

Responding to a question on Twitter, Sony Computer Entertainment president of Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida said that the PlayStation Vita will only work as a controller on the system if the game's developer has specifically designed the game to take advantage of the device.

"@InsideEddie Hey BRO! In a normal sense, no. Unless a game is specifically programmed to allow such use of PS Vita," he tweeted.

Reports earlier this year suggested that Remote Play functionality would not require additional engineering to make PlayStation 4 games work on the Vita. While slightly different from using the Vita as a controller for the PS4 system, all games, except for those that take advantage of the PlayStation Eye or PlayStation Move peripherals, are believed to include native support for playback on the company's portable hardware.

This confirms that the Vita will support remote play for all PS4 games.

Oh yeah

Vita is dead. Great hardware, but Sony leaves it to rot after releasing it. Instead of releasing games, they poorly tie it in with the PS4. Pretty sad.

New discussion idea:  "Should Console Makers Be Held Responsible For Bribing Customers Into Early Adoption With Half-Truths, and Outright Lies?".  I can't think of a piece of hardware in the last 10 or so years that hasn't been announced with a lofty promise about games "at launch" / features and capabilities - like Vita remote play - that never amounted to anything.  Believing that a console is going to do the things it is announced to do is like believing that a politician is going to  "change Washington".

Why does gamespot keep giving me ads to alienware? Why would anyone want to spend extra hundreds, or even thousands of dollars on those rather than making their own?

From what I understand it will play PS4 game by remote play. Im not intrested in using it as the Controller, as long as it is able to play PS4 remotely. Sorry it posted in Italian for some reason.

Da quello che ho capito la vita giocherà PS4 giochi gioco remoto. Im non intrested in usandolo come un controller, finché sono in grado di giocare in remoto

It should be mandatory on all games

At least if you have a fail Vita with you, after the PhonyStation4 bricks on a download or is down 2 months after another hack, you can rage-throw it at the tv. Unless it's dark. If it's dark, throw the flashlight assisted controller instead.

I fail to see how everyone didn't already assume this.

Gamespot forgot to put the disclaimer before the article that this was only for people who don't know how to figure things out using logic.

Even if the Vita did function as a controller. I still wouldn't buy one for that reason. See Wii U.

the ps vita will only function as a controller if it stops getting games and right now I am afraid that's the case

Honestly, who cares? I hope they announce some games for Vita next month or in September otherwise, I just can't bring myself to even think about getting one anymore.

that really sucks. Why in HELL would people want to go and buy a VITA just to use it as a control when we can use the DUAL SHOCK 4 for that?

I thought there was going to be more to it. BOOooooooooo!!!

The PS Vita could never take the place of a good dualshock controller. Meh

The one thing that fails more than the Wii U is the PlayStation Vita.

Why would you want to use the Vita over the DS4 unless there is some sort of second screen functionality?

So, XBOTS are trying to make it sound like Sony failed here?  Are you serious?

Sony said all PS4 games have to have a PS Vita element/integration.  For some games this will mean PS Vita integration as a PS4 controller, for others this will mean PS Vita cross play, and for others this will mean optional gameplay elements accessed through the PS Vita.

Sony never said the PS VIta would work on every game as a PS4 controller.  Those who claim this are just trying to create ridiculous controversy.

PS Vita doesn't have the same number of inputs as a PS4 controller.  Not every dev is going to create two maps...  and no one ever said every dev would.

C'mon XBOTS

In other words, first party games will use it.  No one else will, like the Eye.

EPIC FAIL. Hahahahah all this new ps4 news just gets better and better. Just makes my day go by slower. Can not wait for my Xbox One. MS has proved, once again, that they will have the better system. Baaaaaaah so funny. All the hopes of all the Ps fanboys keep getting taken away. Hahhahahah

Well that's okay. Hopefully the ones that it doesn't work for aren't good games

For some reason stupid comments from Facebook users annoy me more than stupid comments from GameSpot users. Anyway, regarding this article, who cares? I'll use a PS4 controller to play games, not my Vita.

@lucivar1 1. The console didn't brick "on a download." It bricked because of the download, not while downloading.

 2. 360 had an update that did the same thing. Just Google it. That point is now invalid.

 3. PSN was down for 24 days, not even a full month, but especially not the 2 months you claimed.

So yeah. Nice try. If you're trying to insult something, get the facts straight first.

@FrankFoxYaeger Decent products... Wow having proper logic has become a thing of the past.... This is coming from a person that calls himself FrankFoxYaeger.. Guess what you tool.. if Sony didn't give kojima a chance on the PS1.. you wouldn't be getting Metal Gear on Xbox to begin with okay..

Secondly you don't need a PSVita to play your PS4 games you have the DS4..

Lastly the PSVita has Remote Play.. What your asking Sony to do it dedicate alot of resources from the PS4 to the Vita they have.. Its a second screen, already for maps for PS4 games, the Remote play functionality now works for two Consoles PS3 and PS4 and even better on the PS4..

yet you want more of Sony's Blood.. Remember why make it a full fledged controller for the PS4 when it lacks L2 / R2

Glasscut32
Glasscut32

@hadlee73 Very true indeed... People cried about ohh the PS3 controller sucks for FPS Sony developer the DS4, Makes remote play available for all PS4 titles.. More crying comes in ohh nooo the PSVita is not a full fledged controller..

Really ??? Wow gamers are becoming rabid seriously.. Now i am starting to understand how some of these dev's feel...

@jubdeidamasta Except that those of us lazy ______holes who don't want to go to a particular room in our gigantic mansion to play a game can lay in bed with our trophy wives and play.  Wii U made that promise ... and then we found out it only streamed games for like 10 feet.  Sony's promise about streaming to the Vita at least had a plausible technical reason for why their solution would be superior.  Now I just need to buy a Ps4 for each room in the house with the money I made in interest on my hedge fund while typing this out ... sigh.

@cnx2022 Some fools don't understand what they read in an article.. Sadly.. its almost like they forgot the PS4 has a controller..

@youngzen69  I think Sony want to have another type of controller like what WiiU Has !

mbloof

@epicgameresearc The PS3/PS4+Vita still has 100% more functionality than the way cool portable MS+Xbox1 game platform and controller. (oh WAIT! MS has NO portable gaming system. So no cross play, no streaming and no dual stick controller with screen for you XBOTS.)

deathstream

@epicgameresearc

But after a while, don't you get tired of the vague Sony promises that sound really good until the details leak out later?

I don't think this is a big deal either, BTW.  Why would anyone want to waste the minimal Vita battery life using it as a controller?  The DS4 is a much better controller.

@GERMANY21 @youngzen69 The PSVita is capable of that Sony has given the codes to the dev's its up to them to implement it into their games..

@deathstream @epicgameresearc Well, I think it's stupid to use it as a controller, but the reasons are obvious.

Me and most of my friends have 2 controllers. Sometimes there are 3 or 4 of us in my/their home and it would be nice to be able to use the Vita as a third controller.

It's not a deal breaker at all, but it woud be a plus if they implement such a thing.

I know I can bring my own 2 controllers to his house, but sometimes we don't plan on going there and play all 3 or 4 of us that game, so I can't possibly have my controllers in my bag.
