Production on new Tomb Raider film to begin 'immediately'

MGM acquires rights to Lara Croft franchise, partners with GK Films for upcoming movie; casting details not announced.

James Bond studio MGM has acquired the film rights to Tomb Raider and will develop a new film based on the franchise, the company has announced. As previously revealed, the movie will be made in partnership with GK Films, the company behind the Oscar-winning films The Departed and Argo, and is expected in 2013.

It appears MGM and GK Films are looking to make multiple movies based on Tomb Raider. The company said "the first film" will begin production immediately. No casting for the untitled movie has been announced.

Crystal Dynamics is reportedly working "closely" with GK Films instead of merely licensing off the rights.

"They are working from this new take that we've given them," Crystal Dynamics studio head Darrell Gallagher said of GK Films earlier this month. "It's a good partnership. We're seeing the challenges through the same lens."

Gallagher explained that the upcoming Tomb Raider film will not be a continuation of 2001's original Lara Croft: Tomb Raider or the 2003 follow-up Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life, both of which starred Angelina Jolie.

Tomb Raider was released earlier this month for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. For more, check out GameSpot's review.

It is always better to have the same actor/actress in the movie so they need to try and persuade Angelina Jolie to play Lara Croft again.

Starring...Natalie Portman as Lara Croft?

Isn't this website called GAMEspot? I don't think it's unreasonable for the website to confine it's content to games. Plus an entire film based on Tomb Raider can only ever be awful.

I would say one of your best bets will be Jennifer Lawrence if she isn't too busy.

Please, don't let Paul W. S, Anderson handle this.

Good that it's not Angelina Jolie. Her TR versions were boring. And she has a fake British accent and she made me yawnnnn all the time. I believed they only got her to play Lara Croft - an old Lara Croft - because of her pouting lips and the size of her breasts.

Fan service, pandering, cashing in, milking it, whatever you want to call it, it's probably going to suck.

They should look for an unknown actor so if they make more than one it will go over better.

I am sure this will come out as soon as Uncharted, Metal Gear and Halo are finished up. Which would be never.

I suggest they write the script first.

Well, as long as the movie does NOT have Camilla Luddington as Lara Croft and is NOT based on the new 'Rebooted' version of the game, then i might have some high hopes for it to turn out to be good. :)

The other movies sucked because Jolie is NOT a Lara Croft.

The movie seems to be promising with MGM behind. I'm kinda believe in them.

Wait... wasn't this Tomb Raider that Square Enix made a Tomb Raider movie already?

I think Cobie Smulders would fit in with Lara's new look. She handled herself reasonably well in The Avengers.

I think Camilla Luddington should play Lara. She's done a great job playing Lara in the game, and she is a good actress herself. Besides, she understands this role better than anyone else out there.

Really, is this even necessary? Cue major fuckup when they cast some Hollywood bimbo with an awful, fake accent. Here we go, another Resident Evil disaster just waiting to happen.

Don't start production and cancel it 9 months later.

This iteration of Tomb Raider has the story line that would fit best as a film. We may even see some cut scenes from the game re acted in the film.

Can't say I am particularly distraught about this since the game rocked and the direction in which the game was taken does have a lot of potential for a revamp of the movies which were good but not great. Angelina Jolie might be bad ass in a lot of ways but I just felt she didn't fit the role overly well, or maybe it was the attempt to make her ice cool and sexy (hence Angelina's role in this + being a great actress always helps). If the new Lara is super model thin and punches a tiger to death with her bare hands like something out of a Borne film (had Jason been fighting his way through Europe against a pack of savage tigers) I won't be watching it.

Could be good, but at the same time films and games don't usually mix well so you never know.

Yes, you must "fast-track" it and rush it out to milk milk milk....but don't worry about a quality movie. Money is all they care about"sarcasm"

DARKKNIGHTPRABZ

Of course they need to make 2 million, to meet the games standard 5 million target.

So the game most likely wont sell another million copies..........Make a film to push.

Oh, how the film industry and indeed women in general need better representations in creative media. Can't remember the last time we even got close to an Ellen Ripley like character in a film.

I'd go for Camilla myself but that would make too much sense. How about Lauren Cohen from 'The Walking Dead'? Nope. Not high profile enough. Okay. Fine.

@willzihang But this is game related, and it is game fans who would want to see this the most (and want to hear the news). I don't know if it would be appropriate to report on every tidbit as production gets rolling, but certainly the announcement and major updates are warranted. GAME-related. GAMEspot.

@POP-3D Good point. Basing a Tomb Raider movie on the original Tomb Raider games worked out well the last time, right? Right...?

bloody-hell

@kayos539 But it will sell like crazy because of the franchise name Tomb Raider, same reason why they still do Resident Evil movies perhaps - braindead action, occasional boobs on display (or in the case of RE the guaranteed 1 second nipple slip scene) and "strong female characters".

I wonder who they'll pick this time for the role of Lara, the script can't be that hard to learn with all the "uuh", "aah", "oow", "yeourg", "iih", "eew" and permanent panting that was in the last game.

They'll probably spend countless millions USD on CG render scenes and 3D nonsense and in the end wonder why they could just barely break even with the expenses.

POP-3D
POP-3D

@Sparticus1013In fact the 1st Tomb Raider movie did OK, the 2nd was horrible.
Beside, just because they didn't get it right the first time does not mean that the original Tomb Raider games does not have the potentials that would make a good movie if executed right.
Look at the Prince of Persia Sands of Time movie or the Hitman movie both are made based on a successful games but still they didn't get it right, does that mean that the Sands of Time game or that the Hitman games were bad?!
But looking at this new Tomb Raider game (that actually didn't even make it as a Tomb Raider game) it does not even have the potentials to making it as a Tomb Raider game so how it will ever make a good Tomb Raider movie!?
Don't get me wrong here, this new Crystal Dynamics game was good, i played it and beat it to 100% and actually liked it, but it is definitely not a Tomb Raider game and the only thing related to the series is just Lara Croft and the title of the game.
But if they were to make a good Tomb Raider movie then yes, they would base that on the old classic Tomb Raider games, just hand it to some one who executes it right this time.
