Prison Break Impressions

We got a first look at the Prison Break game, which runs in parallel to the first season of the show.

Prison Break fans should attest that the best seasons of the show came early on while the concept was fresh and the characters were...well, breaking out of prison. So it's good news that the upcoming Prison Break game will run in parallel to the first season of the show and add to the existing story arc while incorporating stealth and action gameplay. We got to see it for the first time at GamesCom Cologne and wanted to see what the Schofield brothers were up to, so we went deep undercover to find out.

You'll play as Tom Paxton, an agent of the mysterious "Company" who's sent in to the Fox River State Penitentiary to find out more about Michael Schofield. Schofield has come to the prison under mysterious circumstances--he performed a bank robbery, but as a brilliant structural engineer, he had no reason to do so. It's therefore your job to find out what's really going on while digging deeper into the Company's real motives.

Our demo started as Paxton and Michael Schofield boarded the same bus heading for the prison. Paxton is busy taking voice notes of everything that's going on because he's dubious about the Company and its ulterior motives. Michael, meanwhile, immediately rendezvous with his brother, who he's really there to break out.

The game contains many different types of gameplay. When you get grabbed, a quick-time event is initiated where you have to press the right buttons to escape. There's also fighting--first against T-Bag and then training with C-Note using weights and a punching bag. The prison has an underground "Fight Club," supported by the guards, and you can enter it and take on tougher enemies, earning currency to buy new tattoos for your character.

Supporting all this is the need to build up relationships in the prison so that you can find out what the Schofield brothers are up to and finish your assignment. Nearly all of the characters in the game are voiced by the original actors, with the notable exception of Dr. Sara Tancredi. The character likenesses are excellent, and developer ZootFly has built an engine that's great at doing characters.

Prison Break will be released on the PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 in 2010. We hope to bring you more on the game in the coming months.

@pac-man35 If you actually read the critic and user review and check the score (2.5: Terrible), you would know that it is actually a bad game. It was a great show though.

SyhnD.... I don't know of any show that existed 'exactly as long as planned, and everything happened exactly as planned.' For one, season one of the show was supposed to be 13 episodes, but due to such great popularity (it is a great show) they added 9 additional episodes. Doesn't sound 'exactly as planned' Also: The fourth season of Prison Break returned from its mid-season break in a new timeslot on April 17, 2009 for the series' last six episodes.[4] Two additional episodes, titled "The Old Ball and Chain" and "Free" were produced, and were later transformed into a standalone feature, titled The Final Break. The events of this feature take place before the last scene of the series finale, and are intended to wrap up "loose ends".

@ omegafurion if you actually read the preview you would know that it looks like it might actually be a good game

@ SyhnD Hey, put down the crack pipe for a minute, and read over what I said. Prison Break is an awesome show and I have seen every episode, even the unaired one. At the time I wrote that I just thought that they should not have made it into a game, because most of TV to video games end up being bad and sully the franchise in my opinion. Perhaps I should have expressed my opinions a little better if I had known that you would comment on it nearly one year later with absolute rude BS. And as for your immature Sephrioth comment, it's just a game character avatar on a fracking website about video games. If being around "children" makes you nervous, then go join another website. I love Prison Break and have nothing against it, but I still won't play the video game.

SyhnD, how do you know that the show was written for so many seasons from episode 1? Were you in the room when they wrote it? Most series are NOT written for multiple seasons at the very beginning, simply because NO ONE can know how much of a success a show will be, when it is only in the writing-process. Before the studios get a hold of it, before actors and directors are hired, and so on. Unless you KNOW something, stop talking about it as if you do. And stop using FF as an argument. I've never played an FF-game in my life, but I have enough respect for other people's opinions to leave crap-throwing like out of the discussion. ... And you ARE aware of how most TV/Movie-game adaptations turn out, right? You shouldn't have too high hopes for this game, man. Odds are you'll be more disappointed than the people who don't care for the show.

@OmegaFurion LMAO! This coming from a Sephiroth lover. All you children make me laugh. The show had GENIUS writing. Was written to exist exactly as long as it did. Everything in that show happened as it was planned to from episode one. Seeing the game from the perspective of another inmate is genius. If you didn't like the show, don't play it, it won't bother those of us that loved it and supported it the whole way through. Why even waste time posting if you're not interested? Go play FFVII and make love to your Sephiroth doll. nub.

The screenshots look sweet! Hopefully this will be the big surprisingly good game of 2010, much like Batman AA was last year.

Better hope for great gameplay (looks pretty decent from screenshots), because surely anyone half interested in it knows how it ends before they even start?

This could be pretty good, lets see if there is enough story here to make the game-play interesting and not become repetitive.

The TV show was the most contrived, worst chunk of TV writing that managed to stay on for multiple seasons in recent history. Well, perhaps I'm overstating it a bit. Everything after the first season just felt tacked on. It was spaghetti writing at it's finest. Developing a game based on something that could be described as "mediocre" at best isn't really a good idea, especially in a time when a lot of developers are going belly-up. I mean no offense to fans of the show. It was fun to watch and addictive, it just wasn't quality writing. The game isn't really capable of being well written being based on something poorly written in the first place.

This has got to be the stupidest game I have seen in a while. What a waste of money, hope they jump on the DLC bandwagon and charge 800 ms points for a golden shank.

As a fan I'll probably check it out anyway. Games based on a TV show/movie have been successful before. I personally liked the Riddick games, so the fact that it’s based on TV isn’t scaring me. It still might be awesome. And hey, whatever I need to do to fight T-bag.
