Portal 2 wins big at BAFTAs

Portal 2 picks up Game of the Year, Story, and Design gongs from the British Academy; Markus "Notch" Persson receives BAFTA Special Award.

by

Portal 2 was the big winner at this year's British Academy Video Game Awards, picking up prizes for Story, Design, and the overall Best Game award. This year's gongs were handed out by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts in a London ceremony led by returning host Dara O Briain.

It was a good night for Battlefield 3, too, which also picked up three awards. These were for audio and online multiplayer, as well as Game award, breaking Call of Duty's three-year hold on the publicly voted category. To be eligible for nomination, games had to be released in the UK between January 1, 2011 and December 31, 2011.

Skyrim came away empty-handed, despite being nominated in multiple categories.

The night's other multiple winners were Little Big Planet 2--which won in the Innovation and Family awards--and Batman: Arkham City, which claimed Best Action and Best Performer for Mark Hamill.

This year's awards also saw Rockstar winning its first BAFTA in nine years as L.A. Noire collected the award for best original music. The last time the publisher/developer won an award was for GTA: Vice City in 2003. L.A. Noire's submission follows Rockstar's controversial boycotting of the BAFTA awards last year, when it didn't enter Red Dead Redemption for any of the categories.

Notable absentees from the winners list were Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception and The Elder Scrolls V Skyrim. Both games had been expected to do well on the night, having garnered 13 nominations between them.

Minecraft creator Markus "Notch" Persson was also awarded the BAFTA Special Award. On receiving the award, Persson said, "There's room for innovation now… If I can be a small part of making games innovative again, I'm happy to do that."

Grats to Portal 2. I had a great time playing this game, and it is truly well deserving of any awards. Also, I'm pretty happy that Assassin's Creed Revelations multiplayer was in the running for Online Multiplayer. Such a breath of fresh air multiplayer wise.

@xgalacticax that happen when some loony toons decided to make award just to get fame or FLAME. Seriously, awards shows arent meant for gamers. Each gamer has it own tastes

@y3ivan When considering the fact that I'm British, I think that's a really funny thing to say. ;)

I've owned Portal 1 and 2 but I gotta say it's really not anything amazing :? Yeah it's good, but how it's winning all these awards is beyond me.. As for Uncharted 3 winning absolute jack?! I almost feel ashamed to be British :( The game is near perfection!

@Doomrul, then why not just use "It's a game" as the category, since your definition of it would include everything. Anyway, I do see your point, but I still don't think DS/DX should be included in that category (I love the games, don't get me wrong). If they change it to "Tactics" then those could be included under your interpretation, since most fights require some deep tactics to get through (Well, for D.S. at least).

Doomrul

@Daemoroth interesting , perhaps Shogun would be called a Real Time Strategy ? Oh just incase let me check Gamespot's index of gaming categories ; Real-Time Strategy , Turn Based Strategy , Other Strategy Games , Puzzles , Action ... eeer no . didn't come across a category called "STRATEGY" maybe they are referring to the word "Strategy" ?

Daemoroth

@Doomrul, big difference between a Football Manager and your standard football game, about as big a difference as between a difficult ACTION RPG (Like Dark Souls) and a strategy game (Like Shogun). Every game has a gameplay strategy, if you want to define it that way you might as well include Street Fighter or a flight simulator. Every game on this planet has a gameplay strategy, even PONG. But as for the highly defined Strategy GENRE, it's very easy to spot whether a game fits that category or not, and Dark Souls does not fit that category. PS - Ironic that you mention "dumbing down" new generations...

Doomrul

People finding Dark Souls to be in Strategy category. What rock you have been living under or are you just deliberately being numb nuts ? There is a Football game in that category too. OBVIOUSLY they mean in game play strategy.Or do you want me to find the meaning of word "strategy" from Wiktionary for you ? If you still can't figure why those games were in "Strategy" category PM me , we'll do some 1:1's. Gee , too many shooters and blizzard out there.Dumbing Down new generations.

@franzito Well, it IS cool and original anyway, and that's good enough.

Portal deserves this title way more than Skyrim in my opinion... While Skyrim is a pretty good experience as for "virtual world immersion", Portal is a breath of fresh air in the videogame industry: it's original and innovative, its level design is simply genius, the story is kind of better than I expected, and there are those two or three twists that just keep you playing it. Dialogs are funny and ultra-expressive, graphics just help to enjoy the game even more... As a gamer, I couldn't have been asking for more!

Daemoroth

ROFLMAO at the Strategy category! Deus Ex and Dark Souls!? Don't people know what a strategy game is anymore!?!

@parrot_of_adun Maybe you're right but theses days is very hard to tell the difference of what's uncommon or not in the game's world...

Damn , I hope I get Portal 2 sometime soon and although I haven't played Skyrim , I could safely say from what I saw that Skyrim falters in a number of crucial areas . The gameplay is just clunky , and it feels as if the A.I is more than happy to receive numerous blows instead of defending itself . Not to mention the flying mammoths with invisible wings of course :P.........

I honestly thought that Portal 2 was better than Skyrim anyways. Whenever I play Portal, you can tell a lot of work and effort went into crafting a good story line, with excellent dialogue, puzzles, and everything. Skyrim is a lot of fun and very addicting but in my opinion the storyline and gameplay of a game is more important than how addicting it is.

Really surprising Skyrim didn't win anything. I'd have it as a shoe-in for Best Game myself.

Portal 2 definitely deserved it!!! it did NOT bothered me a bit when I was playing it! I was almost losing my mind because of Skyrim's bugs!!

Portal 2 won big because of its coolness and originality. A game like this come like what: every 10 years?

Another awards event that doesn't blindly just hand things to Skyrim, at last. Skyrim has just been hyped up by its fans beyond any rational level - in a year where there were games that don't have physics issues, texture popping or similar bugs it can't be GotY.

Screw BAFTA man!!! Deus Ex has 10x better story than portal 2. Just the fact that you don't shoot at people doesn't mean it has a better story. Come on people wake up!!!

@RealFabioSooner I could see where most big-time websites would have their hands tied with a game like Skyrim. I remember when people freaked out over Killzone 3 getting solid 8's when it first came out (even when it blew), so I have no idea how people would react if something as hyped as Skyrim hadn't gotten anything. I still find that to be a completely faulty reason as to why most critics weren't wholly honest with their reviews. I personally hated the game, and found a flaw in just about everything; yet almost every single major website has given this game glimmering reviews for reasons that I hated the game for. I guess I'm just really self-centered when it comes to this game. It doesn't have the best engine, graphics, combat, world, atmosphere, audio, characters, or especially story, to me, it's subpar in all of these categories. Sorry for the unnecessary rant, but I just felt it be something to be put on this article.

RealFabioSooner
RealFabioSooner

@Iridescent406 Portal 2 did won GOTY over Skyrim in a number of places, including Destructoid, Eurogamer, GamaSutra, Games Radar, IGN and Kotaku, while GameTrailers went for Uncharted 3 and EDGE for Zelda Skyward Sword. Skyrim is nowhere near the unanimity people believe it is when it comes to GOTY awards. Right now, it sits on about 50% of the GOTYs out there. One can argue Red Dead Redemption actually did better in 2010, considering it won about the same percentage of GOTY awards *but* also lots of *other* categories, while in the case of Skyrim it has been quite the opposite. You can probably count in one hand the number of times it won anything other than GOTY. Before someone jumps in and says "it's better than the sum of its parts", it also applies to many games in 2011, specially Portal 2. Truth is Skyrim is too popular and immersive a game for the press/the industry to leave it empty-handed. However, it's very difficult to say with a straight face that Skyrim does any particular thing better than other games, be it story, characters, visuals, engine, audio, whatever. There's no "best experience" or "most expansive/immersive world" category, so they're left to choosing Skyrim as best game. Since it's so popular and so many people are still playing it, very few would notice the clear discrepancy. BAFTA was an anomaly in its coherence, probably because it's a British award and they didn't feel the need to please other audience but its own.

not having portal 2 = minor case of severe brain damage but dont be alarmed you can fix that by getting the game

BF3, Portal 2, Arkham City winning top awards HELL YEH!!! Assassin's Creed Revelations should have won Original Score...my favourite series of this day and age. Thank GOD Skyrim and MW3 didn't get sh!t!! That buggy mess with outdated graphics and animations in this day and age is an utter disappointment! idc if it has GOOD STORY, but when the combat and gameplay is that stiff, it's really offputting..and the number of bugs..jeez atleast TRY to polish your game to hope to win GOTY awards or any awards at that..can't believe it got away with that. And MW3...smh, I'm just glad they fixed their mistake of even nominating that crap by not giving it any awards. So far I believe BAFTA's awards have been my favourite, aside the the ACR not winning the award(though AC is my top franchise, I do agree that it definitely wasn't the best game in those categories compared to others, except the music, the music is amazing.), I bet it was just an animus glitch. Hate on me all you want for pointing Skyrim's faults, but hell, even Mass Effect 3's clunky animations is really off putting, the whole combat and everything is sooo stiff...sprinting animation is horrible..and only being allowed to vault over VERY SPECIFIC stuff is quite a annoying, granted it was like that since first ME but still, the story about the Rapers cumming down to earth might be the best thing ever for many people, but stuff like that is very off putting to me, for a 2012 game atleast. There's my rant, say what you will.
