Portal 2 PC adds splitscreen co-op

New update for Valve's puzzler brings splitscreen co-op play, Big Picture support, and various fixes.

Released more than a year-and-a-half ago, Valve is continuing to update Portal 2. The company has announced that it has released an update for the PC version of its puzzle game that adds split-screen co-op play, among other things.

Additionally, Portal 2 on PC now supports Steam's Big Picture mode, allowing users to play the game through their television sets.

In addition to adding new features to Portal 2, Valve also used the update to fix various issues, the first of which fixes controller input's "quick ping" button that caused player movement to stop. Additionally, the update fixes players' inability to exit Robot Enrichment or Create Test Chambers menus while using a controller.

I remember playing some old Frogger on my old computer with 3 friends on a single keyboard. I can imagine how stupid we looked with eight hands crammed on the keyboard with weird button layouts.

Yay for USB gamepads!

It is amazing what Valve does for its consumers.

Finally... this is coming SO late... I really don't know what the problem was with releasing split screen on day 1, like it was on Xbox.

Hopefully with this and Serious Sam 3 devs and publishers will stop being retarded and acknowledge that there's no point to going out of your way to REMOVE split screen functionality from PC ports.

Why does the Big Picture Mode part matter? I use my HDTV as my only monitor and I've had no trouble playing it or any other game.

If Valve was a person, I'd marry it.

Nice to know that Valve will always continue to take care of their games.

Split Screen is fine if one of the players is OK while playing with a controller. But what if both want to play with a keyboard and mouse???

That is freaking awsome valve.

This is nice, considering the nonsensical decision of allowing internet co-op with complete random strangers with different motives. I gave up on multiplayer when my partner went idle out of the blue for the 600th time.

This was needed a long time ago, but it's nice to see Splitscreen show up.

In fact, many PC games could use Splitscreen support. I ended up just playing this game co op on my PC with some fellow PS3 gamers which was pretty neat.

Well they game already had split screen on pc but you had to access it through the console. L4d already has it on pc as well but its not officially supported.

Nice, this is awesome of them. I hope they add it to L4D2 at some point too since the 360 version has always had it.

Great! This is exactly what PC games need to do in order for the PC to have a shot at being the dominant gaming machine.

Cool. It's unlikely that I'll use it but this is perfect in conjunction with big picture mode. Valve, I love you <3 Also, Gabe have my babies.

Great, no reason why PC shouldn't have splitscreen games.

splitscreen on PC ? :D hell yeah :) the only real reason why i remain a console gamer is because of splitscreen and local COOP, so i hope this trend continues :) now PUT SPLITSCREEN IN LEFT4DEAD :) great news :)

Split screen coop on PC? Never tried it before myself but still, another player right next to you will make it a lot easier to coordinate in order to solve a test chamber

Now if that can come out to Borderlands 2...

2 players in 1 machine is AWESOME. I even remember the days 3 guys played Gauntlet on a single Spectrum. Wasn't comfortable but was fun as hell.

Really!?!?!?!? Hear, hear, dear publishers! A company that asks not that you should pay more money for another licence. Isn't that a sad for you, Microsoft? That there is still good in this world?

God I love Valve..they are what game companies should strive to become. Constant innovation and they support their software long after it is released. Cheers Valve!

@NoodleFighter you can with console commands, google it for an official steam thread on the matter, most games, actually using source engine can have split screen through console

@deadkingdg Actually it's not that hard to get BL2 running Split Screen on PC. There's a forum about it on the Gearbox Forums. As long as you know a bit about tweaking with programs you can do it. You could even run 4 player co-op if you really wanted to.

@comb5 So? It should be right there in the menu. It was done on console so it's clearly not because it cannot be done due to it being too consuming or because of the interface. I don't even play the game anymore mostly because of that. All my friends on Steam stopped playing at like level 15. My gf would like to play with me but her PC is not good enough to run it and I won't buy it again on console. I play all my PC games on my TV with a controller, so I wouldn't even notice a difference.
