Portal 2 opening in Q4, co-op confirmed

[UPDATE 3] Following weeks of cryptic teasers and a new Portal ending, Valve officially reveals new "full-fledged" sequel coming to PC and 360; GameStop listing confirms "multiplayer co-op mode,"

To anyone who has been following Valve Software's viral marketing campaign inside Portal--comprehensively chronicled by Bit-Tech--the announcement of Portal 2 should come as no surprise. Today, the suburban Seattle studio made it official: The sequel will arrive this holiday for the PC via the company's Steam service and (presumably) as a boxed retail product.

[UPDATE] Valve has now confirmed the game is coming to the Xbox 360 as well.

There are more portals where that came from.

The original Portal drew high critical praise for its mind-bending style of gameplay, which had players traverse inter-dimensional openings on ceilings, walls, and floors to navigate a deadly research facility. And despite winning 70 accolades, including top honors at the 2008 Game Developers Choice Awards, the game was only three to four hours long. Not so for the sequel, apparently. GameStop-owned magazine Game Informer reports the game will be "a full-fledged, standalone" sequel with "new gameplay mechanics, storyline, and some surprising new twists."

[UPDATE] Though Valve's announcement was minimal, GameStop's Portal 2 product page briefly listed the game as having "single and multiplayer co-op modes." Now, it only has the following short description of the game:

Portal 2 introduces a cast of dynamic new characters, a host of fresh puzzle elements, and a much larger set of devious test chambers. Players will explore never-before-seen areas of the Aperture Science Labs and be reunited with GLaDOS, the occasionally murderous computer companion who guided them through the original game.

Though no story details are known about the sequel, Valve is apparently continuing its viral marketing campaign with yet another brainteaser. Several letters of the announcement were underlined, spelling out the nonsensical word "drattmannh0nee." Possible--but improbable--anagrams include "dethr0ne ant man" and "man the dr0ne."

Portal was first released as a pack-in inside the 2007 Orange Box compilation, which also included Half-Life 2, Half-Life 2: Episodes One and Two, and Team Fortress 2 on PC, 360, and PlayStation 3. (It was also released as stand-alone game for the PC.)

The announcement that a full-fledged stand-alone Portal sequel is coming this holiday casts further doubt that Half-Life 2: Episode Three will arrive in 2010. After being teased in October 2008, the game has vanished from view, with some recent rumors postulating that Valve may turn the episode into a full-fledged sequel that could be years away.

@kenny1292 It's not my problem you fail. Keyboard and mouse is simply the better control method for FPS and RTS games. Anybody with a bit of practice can tell you that. Also, valve games on console - LOL

"new gameplay mechanics, storyline, and some surprising new twists." Sounds awesome... And when you mean new twists, do you mean cake gets replaced by pie(or pi for you math geeks XD) or can be replaced by ice cream... Or better yet, cake is ice cream!!!!

Portal was so awesome, but just too short! Hopefully, (and I'm sure they will), they'll make it longer! Can't wait! XD

Portal-based Easter egg in Dragons Age Origins - at the end of the main campaign before you leave the hall talk to Qunari and go through all the dialogue until you can't say anything else. Then activate him again to hear him say: "Where is the cake? I was told there would be cake. The cake was a lie."

@hyperzeroshadow "And remember that its storyline intersects with HL too." Absoloutely, as the Borealis (Aperature science vessel) was located at the end of HL2:Ep2, therefore we can only guess what we will find once onboard : ))

Great! Looking forward to more from this very intelligent franchise. And remember that its storyline intersects with HL too.

I remember playing Portal 1 thinking the first levels were tutorials. Man did it suck when I realized that that was the actual game. How I wish all the levels had been like Chamber 19! More Portal is nice. For those HL fans who want EP3, chill. Portal is in the same universe. You know that coming out with Portal 2 prior to EP3, just means in the new Portal there will be leaks of more bits and pieces of information about the HL universe. I believe there will be links in P2 as to what will happen in EP3. You watch!! Just chill, don't rush art. We all want EP3, but I'd like for it to be just right and not rushed.

@kenny1292 The answer is as simple as can be:The KB&M is an extremely intricate and precise system to use, it in actually takes a lotta practice to get really good at.It's not like a controller where you can just pick it up and get the gist in relatively minutes.Simple as that.

Yap Portal was a great add on to Orange Box - It`s good to hear that Valve is developing more of that idea. Too bad that there is no news about episode three. I almost forgotten how fantastic was to feel the adventures of doctor Freeman. I want to get back to this world... now!

There was one night about a year ago I was lying in bed, then all of a sudden it hit me: "GLaDOS sang an entire song about how she's still alive. PORTAL 2 WILL HAPPEN!!!" Lulz.

Valve please bring some of these great games on PS3. We are all missing out unless we all got a good pc to run them like I do. Left 4 Dead series is awesome.

Bought the Orange Box primarily for HL2 and it`s episodes. Didn`t pay too much attention to Portal at first but after playing it I was blown away. It was ingenious and the fact of it taking place in the HL universe only added too it. Definitely looking foward to Portal 2.

YES!!!!!!! Although I do wonder how Co-Op is going to work out. Can't wait to see (and hear) more of GLaDOS. :D

Kitty_Fields

CO-OP!!! Yesssss! More games need co-op for sure. Although I'm a little nervous about how they'll implement it. For example, co-op in Trauma Center was good but just made the game way easy. Implementing co-op in a first-person puzzle shooter like this game with its crazy portals sounds like a challenge. And I agree, poor Half-Life fans.

Ivory-Dynamite

Yeah Portal is an amazing game with great potential for expansion.I do feel sorry for the half life fan it seems they (valve) have put the PC on the back burner even though they owe PC player their entire company.

Glade_Gnarr

I didn't really like the first one as much as people seem to have. But then again, I don't really like valve games that much, I hate first person platforming and they seem to like it a lot.

kenny1292
kenny1292

@Dante200X How can that be true if i literaly CANNOT play shooters on pc but can on 360? I'm just saying that i think it's player preference i think that's it's more logical. It can't be a fact that something is good, if someone honestly thinks it's bad. It's an opinion...
