Porn producer picks Blu-ray

Adult-film studio Digital Playground chooses Sony's next-gen format for its future offerings, citing PS3 support as primary reason.

Shortly after the PSP hit the market, adult video companies were already releasing pornographic UMDs and sexy video content tailor-made for the handheld. Now, another producer of salacious entertainment has chosen the format supported by Sony's next-gen console, the PlayStation 3. Digital Playground, makers of the 2006 Adult Video News Award Best Picture winner Pirates, told trade magazine AVN that it would support the next-generation Blu-ray disc format.

Digital Playground cofounder and director Joone said the fact the PS3 will support Blu-ray was the deciding factor in his company's choice, as it will give the format a huge installed base. "What I don't understand is why Microsoft didn't put HD-DVD players in the Xbox," Joone told AVN. "If they really wanted to get a jump on the market, that would have been a good move. As popular as the Xbox is, they could have had tons of consumers already using the format."

M$ was just scared. They didn't want to invest money right away into what could be the losing format, and at the same time didn't want to help out blu-ray which was partially owned by Sony.

when the ps3 get released, xbox360 owners would already have an optional hd-dvd player. I advocate microsoft move in giving the consumer greater freedom in deciding which dvd technology to adpot. I believe i can easliy get a higher quality blueray dvd player on the market compared to the price increase i need to pay for the ps3. I don't tied to sony too. i'll rather download porn send it to my xbox 360 to view it on the big screen. That way i can skip the stares from the grannies and grandpas at the dvd store. Lol./ Xbox Live is the way to go!!!!!!!! Tat way u can view trailers too. .

I would say there will not be a clear winner in this war for sometime as the price of the hardware will put off a lot of people. The sony will be slightly more expensive and there will not be a ton of media content right away. Then there is the job of convincing a lot of people that they need to upgrade from DVD to the new standard. Who will do that quickly when people have spent years building up DVD collections of movies. Probably be at least five years before true next standard is decided. IMHO

Almost all new hardware, like vhs's and dvd players, cost a lot of money when they first come out. This is primary to make a bundle of money of the rich. You can see a huge drop in the prices for the blu-ray disc players decrease tremendously over a year after release.

I wonder what kinda sell increase there would be because of the porn. Only time will tell i suppose.

Hehehehe......this is very funny. Porn addicts buying the ps3 simply for porn.

i was already going to buy a PS3 rather than a 360...this just confirms the domination of Blu-Ray!

I anticipate Sony will win the format wars simply because they included Blue Ray right out of the box, and people seem to like converged systems, just as the PS2 helped move DVD movies. My only concern is the price point of the system because teh Blue Ray movie players that are comming out soon are nearly $2,000 a piece.

VHS one because it was easy to copy porno movies. BD-ROM is NOT COPIEABLE AT ALL, so this really doesnt mean sh!t. HD-DVD will still win. Im not a big fan of ruining my movie because i dragged my finger nail across it(bd-rom)

...Interesting. Porn for the PS3. Hey, maybe they'll add in some form of mini game where you get to "stick it to her" as a special feature. Doubt it though. It'll get all the politicians' panties in a twist. Then they'll have another reason to hate the gaming industry. "It promotes pornography because the pornography makers decided in and of themselves to format their discs for the system."

BTW I cant believe no ones made a joke about porn companies releasing their own USB force feedback devices yet.

It makes sense for all studios (porn or not) to support BR. Playstation sold 100 million. PS2 did it twice as quick. Does anyone seriously think PS3 isn't gonna sell well? Within 5 years of release there will be 100 million BR players out there (thats not even counting actual stand alone BR players). I'd be surprized if MS sell 100 000 HD/DVD external add ons in that time. Maybe they'll build a HD drive in their Xbox 720 or whatever they'll call it so it doesn't sound inferior to Playstation 4. Maybe both formats will flourish and coexist, I dont know. I do know there will be alot of people able to play Blue Ray, games and movies and business can't ignore that. Fair enough, at the moment alot want to just wait and see, but I see no reason why PS3 wont sell plenty. Price maybe, but I dont think it will be quite as high as everyone is making out. Where I live I payed the same for my PS2 at launch as I did for my PS. PS3 wont be that much more than the PS2's original price. Take into account that the longer they take to put it out, the cheaper all the components are. I think Sony themselves are perpetuating the buzz that it will be so expensive that when it comes out and its only slightly expensive that we all say "Boy, what a great deal." People are that dumb you know. Look at Crazy Frog. I am not a fanboy. I have owned every console since Atari 2600, (except Saturn and Dreamcast (sorry sega, I did have Master System and Megadrive but)). I will get a X360 (stupid name) as soon as I see a game that warrants its purchase, but to me adding the HD/DVD onto it is just admitting they should have done it in the first place but were to scared. People forget that PS2 really helped to popularise DVD in the first place and they were cheaper than stand alone players. Me, personally, I give a toss what it cost. Thats why I own all consoles. Gaming is what I love and its the games that sell the system. Playstation gets so many great franchises as well as original content, why wouldn't you want one, unless you have a biase against them. P.s. Just because you don't like porn (and I suspect 80% of you who said that are lying, to yourself as well as us) doesn't mean you have to insult those of us that do.

I disagree with the pornlord, as he's assuming that the PS3 is going to be a runaway success. Besides that, consumers who have no interest in games would be more likely to go for the lower priced option, ie HD-DVD, IF a format war were raging. Plus I think familiarity with the term DVD is going to factor into average Joe's buying decision, because more than likely the reaction is going to be "Better quality than DVD!?". Using the same logic it's likely that average Joe is going to buy PS3 based on familiarity with the Playstation brand. So obviously Bluray success is mutual to PS3 success, and because of that I'm willing to make a prediction here that the PS3 is going to be priced a LOT lower than what many may think...

What are they going to put in those discs anyway ? Other than multi-angle (which wasn't really used in DVDs), I fail to see how they will actually make using BR discs worth the shift.

Quit ragging on porn, people that watch it aren't PERVERTs and TOO LAME TO GET A GIRL. I used to watch porn with my ex all the time, so I guess that doesn't count as either. I thoroughly enjoy watching some porn while sitting on the couch with a chick, nothing wrong with that. I bought a HD-TV and I wanna see some HD-Porn, no prob in that. As for the regards to it being game related, it's impacted the format war in a big way, companies copy companies that succeed, and the makers of Pirates are pretty big. Sorry, I gotta say it. If we get pr0n on the revolution, is it gonna be interactive with the gyro controller?

Stop To complain what it have to do with gaming... The point is that this news as a +/- big impact on the format war, and this actual format war as a +/- big impact as well on the console war, so thats the point of posting this news on Gamespot... or should we say ''G-Spot'' Anyway think a little bit, its not hard to see the link with gaming.

There's a big chance that the Blu-ray technology will never take off because people won't be willing to shell out $600 for the PS3. I know they haven't released an "official" price yet but there's enough credible information floating around (even on this site) to point towards the PS3 being amazingly expensive. Will players want to spend that much cash for the PS3? And beyond that, will they want to watch porn on it? I doubt it.

Sony chose to allow porn on UMD because they know porn will help a format's success. The porn industry is divided: The bigger companies want to release porns on Blu Ray because of its higher disk space. The smaller independent companies want to release porns on HD-DVD because of its much lower cost. As to why MS didn't include HD-DVD on Xbox 360? 2 reasons: first, costs. Second, HD-DVD wasn't even finalized when X360 released last year. It was that security thing that prevented HD-DVD's release in 2005. Stop blaming MS!! If HD-DVD players were released back then, we could blame MS for not including one, but the fact is this, HD-DVD won't appear before March. I, and millions of people, do not want Blu-Ray to win, but HD-DVD is all but gone. The only miracle: Blu-Ray delayed + PS3 failure. Even if PS3 fails, it will still sell 30-40 millions by 2010, so that's 30-40 millions of Blu Ray players... and gamers like porns...

Believe it or not, it was easy for Gamespot to gain this info, as the AVN Convention (which I was associated with) was 30 meters away from the CES convention in the Venetian in Las Vegas. They were both in the Sands convention hall (albeit different sections). The general opinion on the industry in regards to adult content on the PSP and Ipod (both of which were promoted heavily at the AVN convention by certain studios as new formats for porn) was actually divided from what I gathered, as some industry insiders supported the new trend, while others were against it, citing the fact that making porn easier to get into younger hands is only going to generate more negative press than both industries would like to have. It should be noted that Digital Playground's support of the Blu Ray format is not a reflection of the industry's commitment to anything, just one studio's opinion. As many have stated on this board, there really isn't much you can do with more space than add more content, and in the Adult Industry, that's not always a good thing. HD porn doesn't = good porn necessarily, as some of the things presented might be a bit of a turn-off if seen in detail (take it from a guy who has seen it in person). It's just not that simple. As an insider with an opinion, I fully disagree with the industry dipping into mainstream gaming, as well as the PSP and Ipod formats, as I strongly feel that minors should be limited as much as possible from adult content. That being said, the Adult Ent. Industry generates 75 billion worldwide (I couldn't believe the graph myself when Larry Flynt broke it down at the awards show), and the fact remains that porn, like gaming, is a business, and the purpose of business is to make money, and you make money by tapping every profitable resource available. If Blu Ray turns out to be the next big thing, then you can bet it'll be milked for all it's worth by both industries. Funny side note: You should have seen all of the CES guys standing in the hallway as the girls from the various studios walked by their convention door on their way to the AVN convention. One Japanese guy asked to switch Floor Passes with me. I said, "Don't you guys have cool stuff in there?" He gave me the funniest 'You gotta be kidding me' look I've ever seen.

How can you be excited over porn? One porn company decides to support Blu-Ray and some of you already claiming BR the winner. There are more than one porn company in the industry and you can best believe that some will support HD-DVD. Why?... because of brand name recongnition. The name HD and DVD is a million times popular than Blu-Ray! Why risk loosing money on an unfamilier product. It would be best to support both formats. It just makes good business since.

We all need to remember that if it wasn't for porn, the internet as we know it would probably be much smaller than it is now. I'm sure that somewhere out there, retired porn stars: Jenna Jameson and Ron Jeremy are eating this up.
