Sony's PSP handheld has seen a steadily growing set of features, thanks to frequent system software updates. Since its launch, the PSP has been given an Internet browser, Macromedia Flash capabilities, and support for RSS. At the March PlayStation Business Briefing, Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Ken Kutaragi also announced plans for a camera attachment and GPS receiver, scheduled for release in Japan in September and October respectively.
In a recent poll, Japanese Web site ITmedia asked its readers to vote on the new PSP features, both announced and otherwise, that they want the most. The least popular features, gaining 3 percent of the total votes each, were the camera attachment and support for electronic money. Another 14 percent of the votes went to the GPS receiver, which will enable the PSP to act as a portable navigation system and could be put to novel use in games as well.
However, the bulk of the votes went to support for the 1seg service. 1seg, so called because it uses one of the 13 segments allotted to terrestrial digital television broadcasting, began earlier this year and allows viewers to watch programming on a range of portable devices. A 1seg tuner for the Nintendo DS is already in the works, and was announced alongside the Opera Web browser in February.

King_Dodongo, I know a lot of people that have PSP and love it. I'm not going to sink to your level and flame, young child. I might hurt your feelings.
Wow that sounds exiting... we want TV!
So they're releasing more multimedia attachments? Meh..interesting, but I'd rather play games on my handheld console (PSP), kthx$ony. *Reads other comments, larfs at REZ.* Lumines 2 plz, thxagain.
Those stupid PSP commercials on the go, sounds exciting.
I find the internet browser on the PSP extremely useful, especially when I am in London or another big city. There are quite a few free hotspots there and a lot of unprotected internet connections (naughty to use I know, but what the heck). As for TV, what is the point, I'd rather just watch a movie on my MP4 player, or alternatively just stick a couple of shows on my PSP itself. On the camera point, I doubt it will be particularly good, I do a lot of photography and I've never liked Sony as a digital camera make (though I quite like their video camcorders). And anyway, everyone owns a digital camera these days, in fact most phones have decent cameras on them. Sony need to concentrate more on the 'Play' part of Playstation portable and release more games, I'm starting to find that I don't play my PSP much anymore due to a lack of new (and decent) games.
for the last time who cares how i write this is no writeing test so that said dont be mad the ds got the psp under its wing and stop saying the ds is for kids its not its for real gamers and kids alike atleast it has games and not movies face it who ever got a psp got robed buy sony cause i still can watch movies or music on my ds with a hard drive that they sell made by datell thats 4 gigs and it still cheaper then the psp and its optional if you want it not like the sony that puts every thing in one so we the consumer has to pay more one more time change is comeing and a little change is good just look wat em did with 50 cent ha ha ha ha P.S.IM FROM THE BX AND I NEVER SEE NO ONE PLAYING GAMES ON THERE PSP SO WAT DOES THAT TELL YOU
i don't know how that would work. especially if i had to pay for it.
to -REZ-: the psp is a sexy system that attracts women? uh... is that right? youre obviously a psp fanboy, but the ds is selling better than the psp. im a sony fan too so relax, but i have a psp and a ds lite. they are both great for different reasons.
Has anyone else noticed how all PSP ads (all the ones i've seen anyway) are based entirely around selling the concept of the thing, rather than its games. Ads such as the infamous white PSP and those "white bits here" ones are trying to sell the machine as a internet surfing, movie machine. Which is stupid given that any UMDs released are on DVD cheaper, and can actually be played on more than one device with a much better resolution, and internet access sucks on the PSP given that you need to be within wifi range, or a computer supporting wireless. Why not just use the computer? Rather than some range restricted, difficult to use tag-on internet. My cellphone has better internet access than a PSP. And surprise, surprise we've got some news about the PSP, and once again its not about games. Its still about what the console is trying to do, rather than what the games do. The only PSP ads i've seen involving games are for GTA in tube stations, and Daxter on a Belgium bus-stop, presuambly trying to sell the games by name alone, which is how SCE is heading these days... So TV viewing, eh? Whoopee... Has that ever been a success on a handheld? Bearing in mind that almost all the aspiring handhelds have tried it. And lets face it, if you're that desperate to watch tv on the go, then you've probably got a portable TV. This is the PSP's problem, everything it offers is available on another, better, format. Movies: DVD (portable DVD players aren't limited to the ever-decreasing range of UMDs...) Music: I-pods, Walkmans, any mp3 player (who can afford a PSP, and hasn't got a mp3 player) Images: Phones, I-pods, paper? Internet: How bout the computer its leeching off of to surf in the first place? Games: Does the PSP have any? It does! oh right, that's a novelty, why haven't they mentioned that? oh well can't offer anything better than a DS, right? Sorry, i appear to have written quite alot...
poll: this just in! PSP users want more games! i know that its hard for them to make so many games for their portable GAMING device, but maybe they should ive it a try
I just have to get a PSP... or a DS Lite
Rez calm down, the DS is actually good if you open YOUR FREAKING EYES. as for this story i think its good for the PSP users to watch TV on thier PSP but i don't think Sony would do that since they knbow that they will be bashed by thier fans to copy Nintendo *cough*1seg tuner DS*cough*, and it will be gimmicky to just advertise the system that used to play games that way. Sony is just keeping forgeting the word "GAMES", i think its the big Sony has the full control not SCEI.
You can add all the features you want to a television, but that won't necessarily increase it's entertainment output (for broadcasts). DVD's let you watch your favourite films or tv shows when you want and this helps compensate for the subpar programming of the last 8 years. Sony HAS added a lot of features to the PSP since I bought my 1.52 machine. LocationFree is a great feature if you have a basestation. The internet browser is weird, because if one was so addicted to the internet that they needed to browse it from wherever they are at expensive hotspots, then how do they find the time to leave their home PC? It's next to useless on a home network if you have a laptop which offers a better experience. One of the better uses for it is to display text documents, but the browser is slow to decode large ones. RSS is good for streaming podcasts or MP3's from your home PC provided you have access to an internet connection, and if you are near one I think a laptop does the same thing. So, I think the PSP should be a games device first and foremost. The PSP needs more decent unique games, like the Daxter game where you can only play it on PSP. Playing Smackdown VS Raw 2006 on a portable is a great idea in concept, but if I have to choose between buying the PSP or PS2 version, I'm going with the PS2 version every time, and I'm never going to buy both. The designers did something really cruel with the PS2 game whereby you couldn't unlock a certain wrestler unless you had played and unlocked him on the PSP version. I assume that this was because Sony wants every PSP game to have some interoperability with the PS2 counterpart. But forcing a person to spend $80 (NZD) to unlock a wrestler that nobody really cares about (hey, it would be cool if Jake was in the game, but it's not a deal breaker), that's just being mean.
So is Sony still planning on making games for the PSP, or did I buy a portable media device by accident?
ummm, gaming? hello? anyone remember that? no? oh go watch tv then.

Yes tv will be great
So ... is Sony going to remake the PSP ?
It's the SEGA Game Gear all over again (but thiner, smaller better graphics & sound ect) but man the GG was huge but the graphics I thought where ace. Shame the battery life didn't last as long! Thou it didn't have the best support for games it did have features which from WHAT this states isn't new. SEGA did first and now Sony may want to try it with the PSP even thou at the time the TV adapter for SEGA GG came out the handheld was slowly dying.
Sony has been releasing a nice and steady flow of updates to the PSP, and I think all PSP owners appreciate that and TV would be cool. Bravo Sony
yeah, so im pretty sick of people bashing the PSP, im pretty sure its a better value, has better graphics, and more features. The psp is much more than a "gaming device" if you have looked on the psp website it said "the portable entertainment revolution has arrived" its simply not supposed to be gaming device, if it was, then they would have put gaming only on the system, so STFU.
I wouldn't mind 1 seg TV on a PSP, but then, I'd rather have a dedicated device for that (not interested in the PSP for the most part). Will they have 1 seg here? If so, I think I'd rather wait for an iPod that supports it...
I am SO GLAD I sold my PSP to get a 360 atleast its still a gaming system and not a check me out I can do everything Piece of Crap....thats better off as a paperweight......I mean there are more UMD movies for this GAMES console than GAMES........ ohh yeah and before i get flamed for bein a fanboy I own a ps1, ps2, nes, snes, and a genesis..
crills, your post has no meaning what-so-ever. When you learn to type and/or use punctuation i'll take you seriously
nice, the only thing left is one word: GAMES!!!!!!!!!
Stop the nonesense fighting... both systems have good and bad points. PSP is cool.... DS is cool... Period. Ohhh and the TV... would be cool too, but I'm just waiting for GT4 Mobile***sigh***
Sorry to tell you this, Rez, but the DS has outsold the PSP by a huge margin and the gap is only widening.
tv on psp wow that's great... cable needed?
REZ i guess you dont read much or play ds games the ds out sold the psp a long time ago and has great games the psp on the other side has few great games and most are ports most people have it just for movies and music the media does not tell us what to buy well not me atleast im a grow ass man i buy what i want to buy dont be mad the ds is doing better then psp do like all my freinds they sold theres and got ds lites and for the record the ds and psp came out 6 months a part and the ds is the fastest selling consol in japans history and little kids dont only play the ds so do grow ups in my job thers more then 200 hundred of us that got ds lites and im 30 years old u know what you need to understand is real gamers are tired of just playing games that look better every year if the game play is wack real gamers love game play over graphics so anser me this how can you play games like gta with one analog thats why i hate the psp i sold mine afther playing gta the gameplay sucksso that being said the wii is going to do the same as the ds cause it focuses on gameplay and not on hd and bluray and graphics i find it funny how they say there next gen systems when all they did was add hd to make them look better thats not the future thats just a add on nintendos bringing the future were you can just reach out and touch the the games and interact with them now thats next gen face it change is comeing and a little change is good just look wat em did with just 50 cent ha ha ha ha ha
no its not worth it...im a psp owner. But im not too impressed with the portable game market right now...so I dont think the DS is worth it eiter. I also use a DS btw. Just stick with the game consoles or PCs until you realllyyyyy waaannnt something that a portable can offer.
I don't understand how anyone can commend the DS for having such great games... The only great DS games can already be found on the SNES or other Nintendo system. (Zelda, FF, Castlvania, Metroid) People don't seem to realize how much of an affect the media can have on consumers. The media is telling people what to believe, wether it's the truth or not. They are telling us that DS is awe-inspiring and that the PSP has absolutly nothing to offer other than an interesting way to waste $300... and people just follow the herd of sheep. It really comes down to a matter of AGE. Honest to god there are so many children with a keyboard and mouse today that it is almost impossible to have a ligitimate, interesting transaction of ideas and opinions. And children absolutely love the DS. See how corresponds? Honestly, how many times can you play a rehashed Mario? Oh, and just so everyone knows PSP HAS ACTUALLY OUTSOLD THE DS! People seem to forget the year long headstart Nintendo had. If you look at sales over time, PSP has sold more units since launch than the DS... But no one wants to hear that... Eleven year olds aren't interested in girls, and I can tell you from personal experience that PSP is a sexy system that attracts women. Now, if only Sony could capitalize on that fact. Honestly, how cool can you look shouting at your virtual dog to "sit!" and "roll over!"?? Ya know, the boat that Nintendo built was sunk for a long, long time... Now those fanboys are trying to rebuild it through propaganda, misleading, and twisted facts. It's pathetic... But if you lost a race that meant everything to you... Wouldn't you try your best to look good at SOMETHING?
The PSP is dying. (keep the flames to a minimum please)
well anyway, if any of you ge one of htese, do a favor to the PSP owners I know and tell them if it's worth it
Actually rl_41, y am the Dodongo King so I can flame-breath on the fanboys or zealots .But answer me How many PSP users do you know that uses the PSP to play games as you?
they need to come with supa dupa franchise games first. but keep those new updates and features comin' lol
That would be great to watch a bit of TV on teh go, whether it be on the bus, or just sitting around somewhere and getting a live feed of a sports game or something. That would be so cool for the PSP or DS.
Hey, what's up DS fanboys. Please stop flaming PSP, it's annoying. You don't see me flaming DS, even though I don't like any of its games. I enjoy my PSP a lot, it has awsome games and great graphics, and watching TV on it would be pretty cool (even though I only play games and listen to music on it)
I'd buy an attachment like that.
Next Sony should offer a downloadable porn sorter, since games are apparently the last thing on their list . *rolls eyes*
Just goes to show that the PSP is a horrible GAMING console. They aren't worth the price of the cardboard box they are packaged in. The DS gets all of my support when it comes to handhelds.
Hey peeps. You want to watch tv on your psp? For the ignorant, you can already do that today. Just pick up a Sony Location Free base station and connect it to your cable or satellite system and you're golden. I did and let me tell you something....."It works very well. a fantastic experience". Take care, fellas.
I forsee the DS kicking the psp ass in portable 1 seg tv gaming when that accesory for the DS finally goes on sale in Japan. Heck they have to bundle five games with the psp to sell it or have it sell for nine dollars more then the ds lite.
Just stop coming out with these useless firmware updates and let me enjoy my 1.5 psp then i'll be happy
I can't help but think of the TV adapter for the Game Gear.
That will be cool, if you can see tv on the psp anywhere you go, just the cell phone stuff. But I still want more games to come though.
Who gives a crap about the PSP? Sony should stop selling it because they will never match Nintendo.
well tonemd_basic, I know four guys with PSP that only use the system for watching movies and hear music. But yeah they always want me to lend them my DS
and the psp hate continues. Seriously, what games have you people actually played on the system and didn't like? Let me rephrase, have you actually played any games on the system? As for the TV, it would be a nice addition but I can only assume subscriber fees if it came out in the US and will utuilize wireless connectivity. A broadcast tv tuner seems like a cumbersome addition (remembers game gear and portable TG16) I don't need to watch broadcast tv that much.
