THQ's Saints Row series has hit the big time. Whereas the original open-world action game emulated the Grand Theft Auto formula enough to turn its Xbox 360 debut into a commercial hit, it lacked a certain something. This week's release of Saints Row 2 may have captured that je ne sais quoi, because the game not only is meeting with positive reviews, but is also sparking a little GTA-esque pop culture outrage from concerned authorities.

The New York Daily News is reporting that New York police in particular are none too happy with the game's wanton approach to violence.

"These horrible and violent video games desensitize young people to violence while encouraging depravity, immorality while glorifying criminal behavior," NYPD union boss Patrick Lynch told the paper.

Presumably, Lynch would not approve of Saints Row 2's Fuzz minigame, either. In that parody of the TV show Cops, players are paid by a filmmaker to dress up like police and use excessive force to bring down streakers.

The union isn't alone in its distaste for the game. Disbarred attorney Jack Thompson called Saints Row 2 a GTA rip-off, suggesting that it pushes the envelope further than the Take-Two Interactive franchise he spent so long crusading against. National News Service followed up on the story by reporting that Leslie Crocker-Snyder, a candidate in next year's election for Manhattan District Attorney, has also picked up the union's cause.

Rubbish! So back in the days the Romans butchered each other and barbarians fought, medieval - killing in the name of religion? That was all video games yeah....?

Usually unions are on the right side of the issues. I guess they have a bit of a point about cop-killing, but gamers aren't going to go out and kill anyone unless they balance their life with other things.

AAWWW come on that kind of stuff is still happening? We all know that video games like this help the young people playing them to take the anger out of their minds and have fun. Oh, and it's exactly the same for everyone else. What about those stupid T.V. shows like Teletubies? Does it influence 3 year-olders to plant a T.V in their stomach? No. Well it's the same for Saints Row 2, nobody will become violent just by playing this game, but they'll get happy and satisfied. And if you take these kind of games off kids' hands, the situation will just become worse. The point is, most of the time violence happens because of crappy parents, we all know that. But it is so terrible that there is still people that think that it's because of video games. I just can't understand this. This is totally insane.

I guess we should all just ban all violence and anxiety of all kind and throw every person under the age of 17 into an institution where all you do is eat shrimp cocktail and play Disney's Toontown Online or something. personally I think if your a parent and your kid is 10 or 11 and is totally shielded from videogame violence, I think you're being too overprotective. there gonna see that crap on TV, they're gonna go to a friend house and see that crap. It really is a dead topic. You can't stop it. And I don't think I'm the only one to say that its not the games, it's crappy parents. Rockstar is gonna get bombed by angry mothers or something if this topic doesnt die.

Let's think about this for a moment... The game is rated MATURE for a reason... because it's NOT FOR KIDS! So if kids are playing it then blame the damn parents who can't so 'no'

"Lynch would not approve of Saints Row 2's Fuzz minigame" hmm i think that the dead will wake up because they dont appreciate the zombie minigame!

All this does is give THQ some free air time." You're absolutely right. No matter what, the union will get nothing out of complaining about what goes on in a video game, so why bother?

Video games don't commit crimes... criminals who have weak parents that can't control them as kids growing up commit crimes!

saints row 2 is so light hearted though... it like getting really mad at southpark for being crude.

2 me,games like this is not a problem just as long as we don't become criminals, insane over the game, and we're smart enough 2 know the right from wrong, what's fake and real. Also, deadmenneverdie's right, nothings going 2 happen. Besides,2 me,anyone that thinks violent games are turning people into a trained killrs should think again,'cause I know that games can't let someone know how to use a real gun,not even make their own weapons in reality. Not even real killrs would use video games to find ways 2 kill. Just 2 get 2 the point,GAMES R MENT 4 FUN,NOT 4 TELLING PEOPLE 2 BREAK THE LAW N KILL,SO GIVE IT A BREAK ATTORNEYS,THERES NO PROOF.

AuronTsubaki85
AuronTsubaki85

deadmenneverdie, I agree with you. These guys are just miserable because their parents take it up the f______ a__ with whatever kind of boogymen they can come up with now and then. They think it's unfair for writers, game designers or anyone else involved in Saints Rows 2 should be lampooning COPS, America's Most Wanted or any other cop related show. That is still not enough evidence for Thompson & his cronies siding him to start criticizing a game because of the violence or police brutality of any sort.

These people really need to shut up, Nothings going to happen so stop talking about it, or at least blame the real reasons and not the fake ones. It is the parents, as Americans, We have the right to do what ever we want as long as we Don't harm others. Collective Punishment is quite frowned down upon in this country.

this record is getting old, put a new one on. blame the parents not the game industry for their F*** ups. also finished this game today, its pretty good but doesn't compare to GTAIV. also does anyone else have trouble getting a online game? i wait to join but it takes ages to find a group of people, won't start with less players and then it will just throw myself and everyone else out of the server.

this games is rated "M for mature", mature as in not little kids. I f little kids are playing this games it's their dumb ass parents fault how they turn out, not THQ's or the game itself. Plus, these old "back in my day" bastards, and all other video game violence bashers need to get over themselves.

sirkel28

Little kids shouldn't be playing this game anyways, that is parents fault. Of course all the violence on TV and movies, and the lack of good Christian morales being taught has nothing to do with it at all. /rolleyes

game companies should just write "warning! if you are a complete dumb F*, this game may influence you to commit horrible/violent crimes!".

Plus I watching COPS tonight and man they do use excessive force. High fives to Saints 2 for the parody. I have the game and I cant wait to play but I got the force unleashed from a buddy for a few days and I need to get through that first.

This is a song that was old years ago. You can watch people get choked to death and shot on tv shows that come on at 8 eastern time. Jack Thompson is calling Saints 2 a GTA ripoff? WTF man. No s$%t, of course it is. Is that pathetix comment supposed to make people not buy it. Nice new approach man but your new approach should a no-comment ignore the game type of deal. I want to see a video game with good o Jack as some fool you need to take down. He could be doing a stupid anti-violence speech on the street somewhere and you roll up on him and take him down! What would he have to say about that? haha

I did an oral presentation about how stupid people try to ban games and other material that they find offencive, it's not the creators fault it's the stupid person that mistakes this for reality and does something stupid about it's fault.

Growing up, I watched a lot of violent cartoons like the Roadrunner. To this day, I have never tried to drop a huge boulder on someone's head. Anyone at home playing this game can't be out on the streets gang banging. Police in NY City probably beat down more people in a week than the gangs do in a month. I wonder what games they played as children? Don't Taze me bro, it's just my opinion.

It's really ironic, I mean I'm here, I'm buying the game, I play it with my friends. Getting the most brutal ones (Gears of War, Brothers in Arms and so...). I go blowing people to pieces, laugh at it and go around boast to my friends. I take screenshots, videos and upload to the internet of the essence of these brutal kills (I have a 1 GB folder containing pure brutal kills). Yet I am normally standing here and never having a thought of intiating murder, nor do my friends. Whereas the violence usually comes from spoilt idiotic kids. Seriously, blame the parents for lack of education. It's not gaming industry insights violence, it's lack of control of children's mind. If parents can teach kids a bit of right or wrong would be way better. Aside from Parenting is the issues, questioning the gun law is a good example. Even Finland realises they need to limit gun laws, why can't USA do it then? The cause of this blame is the paradox of government policy itself.

spittyfie

The funny part about it all, is when i go to the local gamestores..the parents are the ones buying the game for the kids. They are usually there with them when the (underage kid) asks for "Saints Row 2",or GTA. I heard one parent say, "Yea its no worse than what happens around the house", when the store salesman informed him of the violence, game rating, and content of the game. I guess some parents are confident in their parenting when it comes to these topics. Im a parent of 3 and i dont even let my kids watch me play the game. Yet, i have doubts its the "Game Developers Fault", because im a grown @$$ man and from time to time i like to bust some heads when i get home. So im not trying to see production of free roaming violence stop..

Any concerned political group that is so upset about stuff like this and put themselves in the public spotlight shows they must have a lot of time on their hands..heck I must have too much time on my hands if I am talking about this. sheesh what am I doing? Time for some force unleashed ....and Lego Batman

rationaljl

The thing that is really amusing to me, (or disturbing however you wish to visulaize it) is you see all these movies such as the Godfather, goodfellas,Sin City,Casino and t.v. shows such as the Sopranos and Dexter.Entertainment that glorifies violence all the time and I don't see police unions or district attorneys and concerned parents and family groups up in arms about that..I mean good grief they made a Godfather video game and I believe a company made a Sopranos video game. and no one is flipping out about that.Star Wars The force unleashed for crying out loud....I mean parents who were probably old enough to remember star wars are flipping out about the force unleashed and the content that was in it.I don't even think there was a public outcry for the first saints row (which I had played and I personally thought it wasn't very good in my humble opinion.) sigh I should just calm down .It is really ridiculous at this point to get upset over such mundane things as this.Video game retailers should not let kids under the age of 21 buy the game that has mature content it is as simple as that.If they do they should get fined heavily It is not that complicated.

The only reason it's 15+ in australia is because there's no 18+ rating to put the game under. Not the game's fault that governments won't allow the correct restrictions.

This game is 15+ in Australia. Children/ Young People should not be playing the game in the first place.

There are tons of cops in new york. I wonder how many are playing the game regardless of the union's stance.

watching someone get shot in a game will not desensitize u anywherewhere near as much if it were in real life. Plus these games are 18+ arent they? Underage should not be playing these(good parenting)

p.s. I do tend to lean towards RPG, Sim's, and player vs. monster games in general. However, GTA4 and Saints Row are in a class of their own, in terms of original, free form, spectacular HD entertainment.

Here we flipping go again... Let me break it down like this. Some people are crazy. Some people can be influenced by almost anything. The rest us like to enjoy what we enjoy, and never once think that crime in a movie, or a video game is enjoyable or wise in real life.-I agree with eddievh_5150. Violence in real life is loathsome to my soul.

Are the games really the problem? No. Maybe the gun laws need to be questioned before a VIDEOGAME! SR2 is an over the top game, Thats it. It can't rape you, it can't shoot you. I'm gonna kill an extra 500 cops (ingame) just for this crap.

I am 20 years old and I have been playing violent and gory games for 15 years. I can laugh my head off all day when I blow people apart or I annihilate people in cars but if I see something violent happening to a person in real life I start to feel sick. Desensitizing my a$$.
