Pokemon Ruby & Sapphire remakes coming to 3DS this year

"Omega Ruby" and "Alpha Sapphire" launching worldwide this November.

by

Remakes of Game Boy Advance games Pokémon Ruby and Pokémon Sapphire are coming to the 3DS. The Pokémon Company announced today that Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire will arrive worldwide in November 2014, only on 3DS.

The Pokémon Company describes the games as a "fresh take" on the originals, which debuted more than a decade ago in 2003. "The new titles promise to take players through a dramatic story within a spectacular new world," the company said.

More information about Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire will be shared in the lead-up to their arrival this November. The most recent entry in the main series was Pokémon X/Y, which has now sold 12.26 million units to date.

I hope its a new game set in the ruby and sapphire gaming world; Im not really interested in a copy/paste remix. Also will this become the new mainline pokemon game or will it still be x and y?

LOL Well Yellow was the first Directors Cut of Original Red and Blue. Then Crystal was a Directors of Gold and Silver, Emerald of Ruby and Sapphire and Platinum was the Directors of Diamond and Pearl.. so When Heart Gold and Soul Silver came out for DS I was Expecting Spirit Crystal. Guess Nintendo missed the boat.

I still have my Pokemon Sapphire Game Boy Advance cartridge along with my GBA-SP. Keeping it as a memento.

Nintendo Please would you please jump onto the Originality Train that you used to Own. Another Re-hash ..No big Surprise. Still no new idea's for Pokémon either Eh? What the Trash bag, Flat tire and Ice Cream Cone Pokémon did not work so we have to regress to play the same game again?? If your really fishing for new ideas then why not try an Empty Soda Bottle Pokémon?? or a Chicken Wing Pokémon?? or more Animal hybrids Like the Rabbit-Buffalo hybrid The "Bunuffalo" or the "GiraffiCorn"

Ok GameSpot Posters Please Submit your Pokémon Ideas to help these guys.

Damn it's been over 10 years since ruby and sapphire already?

I'm really hoping that they do the sequel thing like they did with Black2 and White2.  From the sounds of it it might not be too far off.  If you think about it, there really isn't a point to just revisit the same story as the reason we got remakes before was due to incompatibility.  I really hope they go in another direction with this especially seeing that Groudon and Kyogre will be getting new forms.

Glad to see Mary getting some more screen time! Also, burst out laughing at the Shawn remark!

Anyone think it's strange they announced this just weeks before E3? Think it's an attempt at keeping shareholders happy until then?

Definitely getting Omega Ruby the day they get released, and I know someone who's getting Alpha Sapphire so we should be able to catch 'em all.
Wonder what Nintendo's next game will be after these... Pokémon Z?

I will keep an eye open for these games, X and Y was a step in the right direction but lacked content.

Looking foward to it :) i thought X and Y was a bad pokemon game because of that awful story you had to force yourself through and get next to nothing after in terms of content post that horrible story. Please don't you ever do that again game freak!

The last Pokemon games were really good.  Not sure I would want to play another remake, but I guess I'll see what they do with it.

There were so many thing that I liked about Ruby (cool pokemon designs, especially the starters and legendaries, awesome battle soundtrack, weather change) and disliked (Only a few older pokemon present, no acces to older regions), but ultimately it was a very fun game (though Yellow and Gold are still my favorites).

What?! Ruby just got out several years ago; why already a remake?

Looking forward to this.  Sapphire is still my favorite Pokemon game ever.

Definitely looking forward to getting this one as well. Was really happy with Pokemon Y. I hope the remake Crystal Version... I had such a blast with that game, that was my entire childhood right there!

I want them to expand on trainer customization. The boutiques were a nice start but the clothing choices for both genders were rather limited especially for male players, while female trainers got stuck with mostly frilly shit. I propose a qr boutique that allows players to design clothing, hats, accesories and shoes. Also alow us to take our hats off. When I first played XY I had it set in my heart to wear no hat and just have the sunglasses propped atop my head or wear hair pins, or glasses over the eyes. I'd also like to customize my face. And lastly I want an adult and kid trainer choice for each gender the adults will start out in a different town of course or be the older sibling of the child trainer. this may allow for varying story lines

It annoys me to no end when 20-somethings are unhappy with Nintendo for making Pokemon remakes. You are not the target audience. Please understand this. Please..

Gross. Ruby was my last Pokemon game. I was so disappointed with that game. I remember Red/Blue and Gold/Silver pretty well, but not Ruby. The main things I remember about Ruby are there being less Pokemon than the last entry, and instead of being able to visit the first two regions again, you get some lame ass battle tower thingy. Man did my heart sink when I got to the end.

It will of course get priced like its a new game, but it will just use the engine from Pokemon X and Y and basically copy paste the maps and story from Ruby and Sapphire. I'm not really seeing much work for them to do. Game should sell for $20 at the most, but will go full price.

If they make changes, i wish they would change the IV thing and shiny mechanics. IV's should just be limited to 1-3 stats or removed all together(no point in both players wasting time to both just get 31 points into all stats). Shinny pokemon should have maxed IV's and you shouldn't need an outside source to increase you odds of getting them(it should just be finishing the pokedex for shiny charm and using the pokerader). Get rid of the need for friends for pokemon safari, that was a stupid idea. Make the game 50% harder then Pokemon X and Y. And really, trading pokemon to evolve is kind of a dumb idea as well, i know social gaming should be pushed some, but not this way.

@zircon001 How did they miss the boat? HG/SS ARE directors cuts of the originals. Mind Crystal would be utterly useless in that regard. And I'm not sure why you'd expect it considering we never got a "water" Blue or likewise.

@zircon001

I'd like to see you do better. Also since when did every single Pokemon have to be some awesome looking creature? Does every single living organism in nature look amazing? So just because some Pokemon had questionable origins or are just flat out lame, you're going to ignore all of the other amazing Pokemon they've created?

Also you act like Nintendo never did this before, they've been remaking their classics for new audiences ever since the SNES while still busting out new games. As for Pokemon, there was the remake of the originals on the GBA with FireRed and LeafGreen, then the remakes of Gold and Silver with the DS's SoulSilver and HeartGold, both were excellent Pokemon titles.

Ok Last Thought "Alpha Sapphire" and "Omega Ruby" so is it safe to say there will be a "Gamma Emerald"??

@RandomAssViking  Who knows, maybe this game will pick up after the events of Black & White 1, and follow the events of the first Herbert and N, with an all new playable protagonist of course. It's hinted that both took off to Hoenn.

probably the same exact game. Like they always do, but put out two version of the same game.

Trev9421
Trev9421

Yeah, it was a great game, but then you beat it and there was very little endgame content.

Trev9421
Trev9421

Just my opinion, but I enjoyed a little more story. I felt like I was actually going with my rival instead of them just showing up 3 times randomly to battle. But the endgame? Yeah, that was iffy. There's lots of things to do in the game, but little is added after its beat.

@chromaticity HeartGold and SoulSilver are remakes of Gold and Silver, and both include the Suicine (sp?) side story from what I remember.

@Vexov  Please do not ever comment on another Pokemon related article again.

HG/SS was a huge improvement over the original games and didn't "copy/paste" everything with prettier graphics.

In fact, HG/SS are almost nothing like the originals. You didn't notice how they said a "dramatic change" to the existing world in Ruby/Sapphire did you?

But no, please continue to act like you know everything about the game and how it should be priced. Your opinions are invaluable.

@abHS4L88 @zircon001

they release two games on the same day, that share the same story, same setting, same gameplay, same characters and even the same pokemon.

Only difference is one game has a certain small group of pokemon, while the other has its own certain small group of pokemon.

and dummies flock to it.

Thank god I'm not that stupid.

@abHS4L88

I am trying to do better, by giving them new ideas.. Its not like the overall story in any Pokémon game has been a Shakespearian tale rather the opposite but The House of "N" just keeps re-hashing old territory to tell the same story again. Would you really want to Watch "Twilight" six times just because its the same story but with slightly different characters each time?? They could do an "Alien" Pokémon Story or a Time Traveling Pokémon or even a Pokémon Micro-verse with "Star wars" like Midiclorians.. ok so that last one might be way out there, my point is explore new ideas unless you truly have a CLASSIC that the fans are screaming for. Not Desperate Actions.

@Trev9421  i usually don't mind the story of pokemon because it's not soo focused but this one was kinda too focused into it taking a chunk of the gameplay for it but most of all it was that team flare section were you had to fight like 20 of them and they had the same pokemon :(

abHS4L88
abHS4L88

@tableofjapan

You speak as if everyone buys both versions, while there are some who do, they represent the minority and are typically tournament style players.

You're not that stupid, just stupid enough to make an ignorant comment.

@zircon001

Lol, sorry for the late reply, GameSpot doesn't alert me all the time of a response.

Something I've noticed about Nintendo is that they tend to give their developers the freedom to create what they want as long as they're not consistently putting out games that fail sales wise so I guess it's due to the consistent success of Pokemon that Nintendo hasn't stepped in and said "Yo, change it up!" :3

Indeed, I had to force myself to stop playing Pokemon X (560 hours logged in) and that will continue with Omega Red :D Playing the living hell out of Bravely Default, nearly 100 hours logged so far.

@abHS4L88

Very well put. and yes I know its GameFreak But without them Nintendo would be nothing right now. Nintendo has the Wallet that funds GameFreak so they could ask for newer Stories.oh well.. So yes if its a Good Story lets go down that road again. Here's to meeting you within the game this November. May Arceus the Pokémon God shine his light upon you. "Gotta Catch em all AGAIN"

abHS4L88
abHS4L88

@zircon001

Oh you were being serious about your idea? Yeah that's why you're not a game designer.

Actually it's GameFreak, not "The House of "N"" and they're not a 1st party so Nintendo doesn't have complete say over what GameFreak does. I take it you didn't play SoulSilver and HeartGold because those weren't rehashes.

If the characters changed the dynamics of the movie and the movie was well made and interesting, yeah sure. It would be cool for them to explore new ideas and see where they could take the Pokemon universe but the fans have spoken and sales figures indicate that this is what they want whether you like it or not (as long as the game is great fun, I don't care).

Desperate actions? Once again, this is something they've been doing, how is that desperate?

Trev9421
Trev9421

I dislike the "bad team" always A) Using the same pokemon and B) using only "evil" types like dark and poison.
