Pokemon Go Plus: What You Need to Know

After getting delayed back in July, the Pokemon Go Plus finally has a new release date, and you should be able to get your hands on one next week, as long as you preordered.

What does it do?

The Plus is a small wearable device that can be worn like a watch or clipped onto a bag or clothing. It will alert you of nearby PokeStops, but you'll have to take out your phone to bring the actual items into your inventory. Its main purpose is to simplify the act of catching Pokemon. When connected via Bluetooth to your phone, the Plus alerts you when a Pokemon appears in-game. Once this happens, you're able to push its button to throw a Pokeball, and if you're successful, the device will vibrate.

What doesn't it do?

You won't catch anything new while you're walking about, though; only Pokemon you've already caught can be captured using the Plus. The device can be useful if you're looking to stock up on candies, with the anticipation of evolving one of your Pokemon--and you'll hopefully catch an even stronger version of an already-owned creature while you're at it. However, if you want to continue filling out your Pokedex, you'll have to walk around with your phone out as usual.

Who should buy it?

We can't speak to how well the Plus works, but if you're looking to play Pokemon Go on easy mode or for it to completely replace the time spent on your phone, then you shouldn't buy it. You can still fail to catch a Pokemon with it, and there are many functions you'll need to do with your actual phone. It does, however, sound like it could be useful for Pokemon Go diehards who run, hike, or don't want to walk into benches and poles.

How can I get one?

It releases on September 16 for $35, but preorders are currently unavailable in most retail stores. Amazon, GameStop, and elsewhere sold out quickly, and it wasn't long before the Plus started showing up on eBay with a price tag north of $100--a handful were even priced higher than $200.

It's unclear if more stock of the accessory will be made available at launch or if the initial supply will only go to fulfilling preorders. We've contacted Niantic and will update this article as we receive more information.

What else should I know?

Pokemon Go and Plus compatibility ranges from iPhone 5 devices and up with iOS 8-9 installed. Android devices that have 2 GB RAM or more with Android 4.4-6.0 installed are also compatible. Bluetooth Smart version 4.0 or higher is required for Pokemon Go Plus.

It was announced at the recent iPhone 7 reveal event that Pokemon Go is coming to Apple Watch by the end of the year. It offers more features than the Plus, although you'll need to own (or buy) a pricey Apple Watch. It displays how far you need to walk to hatch eggs, the amount of XP needed to level up, and nearby Pokemon. You can also collect items and keep track of your distance walked and calories burned. Apple Watch Series 1 starts at $359, with Series 2 at $489.
