Nintendo has become quite adept at repackaging its Pokemon content into new installments in the series. Last year's Pokemon Platinum has sold well over 5 million units, even though it recycled much of the content seen in 2007's Diamond/Pearl edition. Meanwhile, Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver, which revisit 2000's Gold and Silver versions, have lit up the Japanese sales charts since their September 2009 bow, selling more than 1.4 million units during their first week alone.

Still, Nintendo isn't just about repacking content. The publisher's Pokemon subsidiary announced today Pokemon Black and White will arrive for the DS in Japan this fall. The no-shades-of-gray action role-playing games will be the first original installments in the flagship franchise since the critically lauded Diamond and Pearl.

Details on what gamers can expect from Pokemon Black and White remain under wraps. However, Nintendo has said that the game will be a "groundbreaking evolution of all aspects," though it will presumably maintain its traditional adventuring and battle mechanics. As for the dual name, Nintendo traditionally releases near-identical editions of the same Pokemon game under slightly different monikers, encouraging players to exchange captured monsters between versions.

According to Pokemon Black and White's official Web site, additional details about the title will be revealed on April 15. The publisher did not reveal a release window for territories outside of Japan.
