PlayStation Vita gets social apps and firmware update today

Facebook and Foursquare up for download on PlayStation Network; 1.65 update allows 10-minute auto standby.

PlayStation Vita users in Japan and Asia can look forward to two social additions to the PlayStation Network store as well as a mandatory update that fixes certain issues with the system.

Owners of Sony's recent portable system can download the Facebook and Foursquare apps via the online store for free. The Facebook app lets users scroll the screen via the rear touch pad, while the Foursquare app makes use of the device's location tracking.

Vita owners can now annoy their Facebook pals on the go.

The newest firmware update, called version 1.65, stated that the Auto Standby option can now be set to 10 minutes instead of the previous maximum of 5 minutes. Other additions include bug fixes for Vita titles Dynasty Warriors Next and Unit 13, and the ability to double-tap the shift virtual key to set the input to caps lock. For more information, check out the official Japanese Vita page.

10 minute standby is really good . the 5 mins was too fast. actually there should be an option to turn it off. because if you are downloading a game. and it goes into standby it seems the game will stop downloading (will be paused). which is annoying. that means you got to keep checking on the progress.

Just got 1.66 today here in Europe and it was...useless. Not even improvements in PSP compatibility.

@daabulls23 I agree. Make the use of it optional

They need to change the menu screen so that you don't need to use touch screen.

It always baffles me how after months of silence they release an update that does things like the "ability to double-tap the shift virtual key to set the input to caps lock" when the whole system's interface needs a major overhaul. It's a spit in the face.

Would rather have flash and HTML5 support, could care less about about social crap.

Things that should have been addressed before it was even released...

YAAAY, SOCIAL APPS!! Because we totally don't already have computers, tablets, and phones to do that! Seriously, why does SONY think someone would be excited to upload his highest score on WipeOut to FB? Unless their crowd audience is 12 years old. Instead, why not do an update that LETS YOU PLAY PSP GAMES?!!

All I want is for PS1 Classics to be available to download... I have probably a dozen games (including the epic set of FF7-9 and Tactics) and all i want right now for the Vita is to be able to play them! I hate the fact I still have to lug around my old PSP when I go places, instead of just being able to take my Vita by itself, solely for the reason of all the PS1 Classics I have bought.

I'm guessing that Japan didn't have Facebook and Foursquare already then? We've had it in Europe since release. So basically we in Europe (and those in the US) aren't getting anything new then? Let's hope that we'll at least see a few fixes for the PSP emulation so that I can shift the rest of my minis over from my PSP.

meanwhile in America... nothing much.
