PlayStation: The Official Magazine shutting down

Future US confirms Sony-focused magazine will cease publication after upcoming Holiday 2012 issue.

The list of gaming publications to cease production is growing. Publisher Future US confirmed to Game Informer that PlayStation: The Official Magazine's Holiday 2012 issue will be its last. No further information regarding why the magazine is coming to an end is available.

PlayStation: The Official Magazine editor-in-chief Roger Burchill remarked on Twitter, "And…I think it's time I say 'So long and thanks for all the fish,' and take a little break from Twitter. Check you on the flip side."

According to marketing material documents, the magazine boasted a circulation of approximately 139,000 and an audience of 956,320.

PlayStation: The Official Magazine is the second gaming-focused publication that Future US has canceled recently, following the closure of Nintendo Power in August. Additionally, the cancellation of PlayStation: The Official Magazine comes one year after GamePro shut down after 23 years of continual publication.

ahh this hurts. first Qore , then the Blog goes bad now this?

and the kicker is - they replaced the balance of my subscription with PC GAMER!

I'll take it- i play both. but it shows there are no other PS3 alternatives.

I guess the XBOX mag is still out there for now- so at least those guys have some joy still.

what the hell? i had no idea this was stopping production. man does this piss me off. i love nintendo power and Playstation magazine as well. i'm sorry but regardless if it goes digital it's just NOT the same as reading the magazine and holding it in your hands. there's nothing like that feeling ya know? call me old fashioned but that's how  it should be.

Digital? cancelled... Must be hard work to write good articles about how poorly Playstation is doing in the west.

there might not be a Playstation 5.

Sad to see PS magazine go by the way side.  Really enjoyed reading it.   Maybe it will go digital, but not likely.

What about those of us who actually paid for the magazine? Future US is still around. Are they going to shaft us? How do I get refunded on the rest of my subscription???

that's kind of depressing. i'll take magazines over online articles any day. sad to see the medium dying down, but what can you do? theres nothing like actually flipping through the pages in hand. gonna miss it...

Dang. I like having magazines. Great for reading in the bathroom. I still have dozens of back issues of GP, NP, PSM and EGM sitting around. It's fun to go back and read them. plus if you have kids they are great for art projects.

Looks like Game Informer will be the only magazine left. Being 35 years old, I hate seeing gaming magazines dying off since I was raised on that medium and use to look forward the mail being delivered everyday in anticipation of EGM, Nintendo Power, etc being in the box. But with the internet giving us instant access to breaking news these days, there is just no way for print to keep up. I'll give GI props though, some of their cover stories have been pretty good this year.

I still think it's better to read a long game report or review print than online. Sad news about Playstation magazine. However, the Brazilian edition is still running (but they have a more walktrough direction than its old "mother")

I am terribly sad to see the age of gaming magazines coming to an end. I grew up on games and game magazines. I still remeber getting the first issues of Nintendo Power and EGM, trying to beat the 8 bit games of long ago. Now only a revitalized bi-monthly EGM rmains of all magazines that exist in the US for most of us. I love having the magaiznes. The touch of the glossy pages, that no video screen can replace. Seeing shots of new games, and looking over teh shot trying to discern every last detial you can. It has been a faboulous and enjoyable ride, and it is a pure shame it has to come to an end.

Wow...this is news. I have a collection of every issue from when the magazine first debuted in the nineties. I could see this on the wall. Not because this is the internet age but because it was bought out by Sony. It lost its independence to review all games fairly and its soul after they canned the old writers and introduced a more cost effective, streamlined, cold iteration that they are cancelling today. Oh well, I was letting my subscription run out this year anyway.

Nintendo Power was the last of the *big* gaming magazines to go down.

Simply put, no other magazine that could be put out of print now would be important news. All the oldies are dead. Sadly.

Well it sucks to hear about anyone losing their job but on the other hand pretty much all magazines will either go extinct or go digital, all because of what I am using to type this message now.....

Good.. I had a star letter published in '06 when my mates dog ate his brand new PSP and I'm still waiting for the 5 PS2 games to turn up...

Good.  This magazine was just advertising for game publishers, not any kind of useful game journalism.

The advance of the Internet indeed is one of the reason. Now it's so easy to get information about what you want from websites, plus you can get demos from PSN if you have  PSP, PS VITA or PS3. Although i would say that i kind of miss that time when you have to wait 1 month to get a new magazine.

Man, I'm going to miss the experience of going to Borders (gone), sitting down with a nice coffee, and reading official gaming magazines (gone/will go soon). I remember how exciting that was in the first 2 years of each gaming generation. This is a shame. At least OXM is sticking around and holding out for the release of the next Xbox.

Sad news...they had just gone digital too on the App Store newsstand. There's only 4 issues up...too bad they didn't have longer to see if it's worthwhile.

INewIRave

Although the whole idea of demos becoming available online was a major contributor to the decline of the magazine what put me off them in the end was the new writers which seemed to come from nowhere during the end of the ps2/start of the ps3 era. They were absolutely ******* clueless with specific prefences to certain genres, dismissive of others.

Rennik_Repotsir

I subscribed to them until they quit providing demo discs during the PS2 years.

TTDog

I stopped buying "Official" magazines due to their insistence I pay over the odds to finance the demo disk on the front... if they offered a reduced price version without the disk then I'd happily keep buying them... but they won't.

The internet killed it..in the near future there wont be any news papers or magazines anymore, everything will be electronic or on the internet.

Phil-teh-Pirate
Phil-teh-Pirate

OPM used to be perfect, fantastically written articles and the only PS magazine to give out a demo disc, and back in the day that was really the only way to try out new games! You had to buy the magazine to try before you bought.

But now I can hit the PSN and download any demo fairly quickly and for free to boot. In a way I guess thats ruined me, I used to pay for the demo's with the magazine and realistically I intended to get my moneys worth from the disc so I played everything on them (thats how I found classics like Gitaroo man, Discworld 2 and other great games I never would have considered before).  As I see it now I dont have to play the demo if I really don't to, maybe I'm missing out on other gems but I really don't feel compelled to play them!

Sad to see a great thing simply be caught up in the times!

To be fair I used to buy PlayStation mags quite often.  The evolution of the internet though and sites such as this mean as soon as the magazines are released the news is already outdated :(

Sad times really, but technology moves on I guess.

Ah well.. it'll save the trees :P

Sadly my favourite Nintendo magazine in the UK shut down too. I guess multi-format really is the future in all things.

I still get OXM. It's pretty cheap. However, they don't give you demo discs anymore (which is klnd of pointless nowadays) and some of their videos are posted on Xbox and now Gamespot now has an app on it. It's still a great read though. I missed reading articles by Dan Amrich. The Crystal Ball is interesting.

GOD DAM!!!!! Waiting for a magazine to come in the mail was way more exciting then checking a website. And also when you were done reading an article in a magazine there was no stupid comments section with peoples useless opinion and ignorant comments.

Just like this one :P

Jeez, first Nintendo power, now Playstation magazine? Sad to see so many video game magazines ceasing publication these days. But with the internet delivering news the instant it breaks, it seems this was all but inevitable.

It probably would've been better if they went digital, though, but who knows.

print media is dying, thats all you need to know.It wont die everywhere, but for things like video games its bound to happen with all the online resources and the fact that most of us are always digitally connected.
