PlayStation Store adding Indie Games category

New category will house the latest indie titles in one place and aims to highlight the "most unique gaming experiences."

The PlayStation Store will add an Indie Games category this afternoon, Sony announced today.

As its name suggests, the Indie Games category will house all Sony's latest indie titles and aims to highlight "some of the most unique gaming experiences" on PlayStation platforms.

The Indie Games section will launch with some of PlayStation's most well-known indie titles, including The Unfinished Swan and Journey, as well as Guacamelee and Thomas Was Alone.

To mark the announcement, Sony has cut the prices and offered promotions for various games (listed below). New deals on select titles will be made available on a weekly basis.

Retro City Rampage: 50 percent discount to all from May 7-21.
Papo & Yo promotional bundle containing the soundtrack and game: 40 percent discount (55 percent for PlayStation Plus subscribers) from May 7-21.
Zombie Tycoon II: Free for PlayStation Plus subscribers for a limited time.

It's about freaking time...

About damn time. XBLA has had indie games for a while now. And PC gamers have had access to indie stuff on GOG, Steam and Gamersgate for years.

I wish Sony would go back to the old store. At least it worked. I access the PS Store online now since it operates a lot faster and has a cleaner and more usable interface.

7 years in and Sony finally decides to start organizing the store.  Well done.

I'd prefer they fixed the laggy, annoying store app. What was so wrong with the old store anyway?

"Sony's latest indie titles"

I'm confused. How can they be indie titles if they're Sony's?

LOL @ Sony calling games they financed "indie".

So basically Sony is copying Microsoft again... Sigh....

If they mean those unique indie and PC indie games, then yay.

I've always been more of an Xbox Fan, but sony is really starting to make moves in the right direction while Microsoft is making quite a few the wrong way. Yes, Microsoft has an indie store but they pay it little attention and it gets clogged up with minecraft clones. Now, if only Sony would make a controller that fits my hands.

Glad to see sony finally starting to catch up with xbox live. If M$ really are going to flunk next gen, it's good to know the ps4 will be somewhat up to scratch

This is a very smart move.

Unique- being without a like or equal : unequaled.

So the phrase, "most unique gaming experiences."  is absurd.

Nothing can be more unique than another.  Something unique is unequaled.  There aren't levels of uniqueness.

Although iam a PC gamer but i hope that The Shitbox gets owned next gen by PS4,

Most of my friends they have the Shitbox, i asked why didnt you guys buy the PS3 instead of this piece of junk, they sed because the 360 is much cheaper.

And i think this was the case by many gamers that bought the 360, because it was cheap. Now that both PS4 and the next xbox are around the same price i know for sure that most people will go for the PS4.

This is going to be one hell of an E3.

glad to see Sony trying to foster a good indie scene, though a store front is only the start of a long list of things that need to be done, before the platform can be considered indie friendly.
The dev-friendly hardware in the PS4 will also be a good thing, but things like the authentication process, and all the red-tape around that, needs to be considerably trimmed back.

We'll see where Sony goes with this, but lets hope it continues a good trend for the Playstation.

@nate1222 so have ps3'ers, the only difference is now the indies aren't lumped in with the other games, the store has a dedicated category. I guess journey winning game of the year all over the internet completely went past you

DarkNeoBahamut

@kohle36 Xbox users complained about the bad look of the Store, and now we PS3 users are suffering because of it.

@Saketume indie games made only for Playstation like Journey or The Unfinished Swan but the studios them self aren't owned by Sony

@DarkSaber2k Steam is good at highlighting Indie titles, I agree.

However, I still buy all the Indie titles I can from GOG.com. :P

@Ansem_Rev Microsoft were copying Steam (and Steam were copying several other online retailers.) Just saying.

@gatsbythepig I disagree.

A pink tomato with blue dots would be unique.

A rainbow colored tomato with organic metal spikes, self conscience and a mariachi band would be more unique.

@gatsbythepig How dare they use common English  They should get their lawyers to look it over and craft the non-spoken but more correct English instead. I'd rather read a EULA than this spoken English crap! /s

Because pushing boxes onto pressure plates or doing context sensitive faux interactions is such a unique and unequaled gaming experience.

@walidras Nah , people buys 360s because of the controller which is more suitable to play shooter than the PS3's .

TrueGB
TrueGB

@walidras Yep. Gamers are frugal, no denying that. People think the Wii sold in spades because it was so unique. No, it's mainly because its starting price was $300. That's the point where most consoles really start to sell.

Hvac0120
Hvac0120

I don't really get the "Xbox 360 is cheaper" argument. Sure; you could get a console cheaper, but when you start looking at accessories and playing online the cost leaps over PS3. It's not as bad now as it was with the old RROD-prone Xbox's since WiFi, wireless controller, and large HDDS are all part of the new console bundles. Is was a much bigger issue for the first few years of the console cycle.

Today you may still spend less by choosing a Ps3, but the savings will mostly from skipping on PS+ whereas on Xbox 360 it's harder to keep from paying for XBL considering you can't even browse the web without a Gold subscription.

shingui5

@mindfreak4563 i think Journey is PSN exclusive, but Thomas was Alone is out on PC (and is excellent btw)

Gallowhand
Gallowhand

@shingui5 There was an article not long ago where they addressed the issue of the 'red tape'.  The whole process has been streamlined, apparently, and Sony have even sent out dev kits for free to some developers.  Devs can now set their own pricing as well, so it is looking really positive at the moment.

I just hope that Sony can carry through with all the changes.

spectreSE7EN

@DarkNeoBahamut I like how it is xbox users fault for a decision made on a console that they don't even play.  Sure, that makes sense.

Saketume
Saketume

@wdma But they are they publisher aren't they?

Unfinished swan is developed by Giant Sparrow & Sony's Santa Monica Studio and published by Sony. Hardly independent then is it..

Gallowhand
Gallowhand

@TrueGB @walidras There's a lot of truth in that.  I'm quite frugal myself these days, because money is tight, and I always wait for the best deals.

However, I tend to go for console platforms that will offer me a decent lineup of games that appeal to me (and to other gamers in the household).  So far the Wii U hasn't shown anything of interest to us, and we're tired of X360 exclusives.  The PS4 is a very strong contender for our next console purchase, so I'm saving all my pennies. :P

kohle36
kohle36

@Hvac0120 Actually, between the WiFi adaptor and a single year Gold subscription, the 360 was more expensive even at the PS3's inflated launch. Since then, a lot of players have put hundreds of dollars more into subscription fees. Add on to that the lack of blu ray drive and region locks, and I don't see why it would have appealed to anyone other than people just sort of following what their friends did.

TrueGB
TrueGB

@Hvac0120 But people don't think like that. They see the price on the box and consider that one only. That's why long term plans and additional costs are so darn popular. They work.

DrRockso87
DrRockso87

@shingui5 @mindfreak4563 Yeah. Plus, Papa & Yo was developed with Sony funds but released on Steam as well so I think occasionally it can happen.

shingui5
shingui5

@Gallowhand @shingui5 yeah i saw that, and responded positively to Sony's willingness to foster an indie environment there as well.

It all comes down to execution though, so while a store front is a good first step (a step perhaps, that should have been taken a long time ago), there's a lot to be done, and a lot that needs to be done right. The PC is an easy platform for indie developers to run to when they make a game, and Sony need to do a lot to make the PS4 as friendly as the PC is in this regard.

Sony have said the right things, so lets cross our fingers and hope it all doesn't go pear-shaped in the end *looks at XBL indie channel* :P

DarkNeoBahamut
DarkNeoBahamut

@spectreSE7EN @DarkNeoBahamut Because they were the only ones complaining about the Store (you don't need to own a console to know the look of the interface), most of PS3 users didn't care about the look because it worked just fine.

arc_salvo

@kohle36 @Hvac0120 Yeah it's true.  Back when the PS3 was $600 price was definitely an issue, but I've had the negative experiences with Gold and the lakc of built in Wi-fi on the early models of the 360 (I owned 2, 1 of those 2 broke and out of Warranty damn it...)

So while I was a big lover of the 360 at first (Because I loved the original X-box back in the PS2/GCube days) I now like my PS3 better.  Although uh... I play most of my games on PC and use my PS3 to watch streaming video and blu-ray mostly but well... I use it more than my 360!
