PlayStation Now for PC, DualShock 4 Wireless USB Adapter Announced [UPDATE]

[UPDATE] Sony has responded to our request for comment, saying the DualShock 4 will continue to work with the wireless USB adapter in the same way as it does when wired with a USB cable. That means some games may support an Xinput controller like the Xbox One, while not offering functionality for the DualShock 4. The original story follows.

The video game streaming service PlayStation Now is coming to PC, Sony announced today. Also revealed was a DualShock 4 wireless USB adapter, which can be used to connect your PS4 controller to your PC wirelessly for PS Now and Remote Play functionality.

The streaming service comes to PC in the UK first and then North America shortly after. The PC app will be available on the PlayStation now website once it launches in your region. PS Now on PC requires the use of a DualShock 4. You can currently connect the controller to your PC via Bluetooth or USB cable. If you want to connect a DualShock 4 to your PC wirelessly via USB, you'll have to wait a bit. The adapter launches in early September at a suggested retail price of $25 and is compatible with PC and Mac. It can be used for PS4 Remote Play, in addition to PS Now.

Despite the controller requirement, head of PlayStation Network Eric Lempel says you won't need to own a PlayStation console. Additionally, if you already have a PlayStation Now subscription, you'll be able to use it on PC and play wherever you like.

"If you have [PlayStation Now] today, then you're ready to go," he said. "You just sign in with your ID and you're off and running. Your saved games come over with you, you can continue where you left off, you can start on the PC and continue on a console, and vice versa. The titles are the same, there's not a sub-set of titles, it's all the same titles that are available in both places."

It's not yet clear if the wireless adapter makes the DualShock 4 work with every PC game as an Xbox One controller or if developers would need to specifically develop functionality for it. We've reached out to Sony for comment and will update this article as we receive more information.
