PlayStation Home renovations coming this fall

Sony will overhaul PS3's virtual world with new activity hub, themed districts, streamlined interface; user count tops 23 million.

Sony is planning some major Home renovations for this fall. Today, the company announced plans to overhaul the PlayStation 3's virtual world, introducing a redesign that brings with it new ways in which players can connect with one another, launch free-to-play games, and buy virtual items.

Home will have a new look come this fall.

The Home redesign's core feature will be the introduction of a new hub, which serves as a starting point for various genre-based districts. The hub is also where gamers will be able to engage in Home's questing system, which Sony hopes will add a game-like experience to the service itself. Players will also find community-oriented activities in this area.

From the hub, players can instantly travel to one of four genre-based districts. First-person shooter fans will want to head to the Action District, where they can find action- and horror-genre playable titles. The Sportswalk offers sports-related free-to-play games, while also providing real-world scores and highlights.

In the Adventure District, gamers will be transported to an island jungle environment, where they will find adventure-themed games. Lastly, Pier Park operates as a waterfront boardwalk, bringing with it a variety of carnival, puzzle, outdoor, and arcade games.

The update will also bring with it a retooled Home client. Of particular note, Sony hopes to better streamline login processes and other usability factors with these changes.

Lastly, Sony provided a stats update for Home, which was launched for the PS3 in December 2008. More than 23 million users have tried out Home, spending on average 70 minutes in the virtual world per session. There are more than 230 playable games, as well as 9,000 virtual items, 600 community events, and 35 content partners.

While an interesting CONCEPT, Home is mind-numbingly dull.

I also like the idea of home, but haven't used it much. I think these changes will help a lot, if the new districts make the service more game oriented, and especially if they are interesting to walk around in of themselves. Something I'd love to see are more interesting controls, it'd be way better if you could run and jump. I think even climbing would actually go really well with the current concept. If they want to bring people into the social aspect, the whole thing should be a game.

I'm surprised theirs any interest left in PS-home, its pretty damn awful imo.

Home has only recently become semi interesting with activities. And even then none of them are really free. Most of them have items that vastly improve game enjoyment and some of them require an admission fee... These tweaks will probably not change any of that. So I'm also guessing that the average log on time will not change from the initial seventy minutes. Ten minutes to log on, ten minutes to redownload entire areas that have been seen minor updates. Ten more minutes to figure out what all is new. Then twenty minutes to load up all the areas and avatars, and another twenty minutes to roam around while sending messages via PS3 Dashboard before you finally decide you just don't give a **** anymore & log out.

Playstation Home is pathetic.

If they spent 70 minutes it was only because they were looking for something to do...I've tried home a couple of times and while it's an intriguing concept I'm completely unimpressed by the execution. Maybe the update will bring some nice improvements.

I wouldn't consider Home useless because I have found some net bros there and we shoot the sh*t. When I do go into Home, it is always crowded so I guess this is a good move by Sony.

I liked Home, but downloading new areas was just plain annoying. I think I only went on it twice? I didn't have the space on my hard-drive to carry on. It's a good idea, and excellent for the community.. but my gaming came first.

Home... lol So over-hyped. And Sony, I'll be the first to spit in your face; 23 million users? Don't kid yourself. Maybe if you count multiple log-ons and screen-names.

average of 70 minutes? LOL more like 7 minutes... Seriously though, some bright spark over at Sony need to rethink what they want to do with Home. Marry it with Google+ or something

@mdchapel9 - Money for the PS3 or PlayStation Home? PS's are quite a bit more affordable as of the past two years with these prices drops, and PlayStation Home has always been free. And now, it you buy a used/refurbished PS3, it's even cheaper than the $250 tag for new systems. Or you could just buy a 360 and be forced to keep putting money into it every month..

The thing with any New thing in home is people care about it for about 15 minutes. Any game thats released in home is usually forgotten about within a week. Not to mention they are usually terrible. People dont go on home to play games...well not those kinds of games.

AWESOME!!!!! The blog has a few pics if anyone is interested, including a map. There seems to be an Uncharted Store(maybe changes depening on promotion) and Drake's plane is in the "Adventure" section. Also, the pier is confirmed to have a Ferris Wheel that you can ride on.

Open up Google, and type in "penny arcade a penetrating look", with or without quotation marks. Every time I hear news about Home, I think of that strip.

I'd rather stare at a blank screen than use Home in its current form. Sony has tried revamping Home before. I'm not convinced they'll make Home into something I want to use this time.

Remember when Home was going to be the great 'killer app' that pawnd xbox live and all things Wii? Remember all Sony's hype? What a load of toss they gave us, just like GT.
