PlayStation executive says Wii U is "just getting started"

Worldwide Studios president says you shouldn't count Nintendo out, reveals he owns two Wii U consoles.

The Wii U may be struggling so far, but you shouldn't bet against the system just yet.

That's according to Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida, who said recently on talk show Kurokawa Juku (translated by Kotaku) that a slow start doesn't always mean poor performance in the long run.

"The latest Mario game is really good, too. I think the Wii U is just getting started," Yoshida said, adding that he owns two consoles himself.

"People can get together and enjoy [the Wii U]; it's got plenty of wonderful games." Yoshida added. "Nintendo helps raise and teaches the fun of games to people just starting out. I think that's a very important thing in this industry."

The Wii U has sold 3.91 million units across the world so far, below Nintendo's own expectations. Still, the company is sticking by its previous estimate of selling 9 million units by the end of its fiscal year in March 2014.

Earlier this week, Nintendo of America executive Reggie Fils-Aime said Nintendo is spending "substantially more" to market the Wii U this holiday compared to last year.

It must be really bad for Nintendo if their competition is out there to defend them.

Why is this an article again.  He said the same thing two months ago didn't he? *yawn come on Gamespot, I know it is a slow news time.. but retreading articles from months ago and making it sound like this is new information is pretty lame.

LoL, the head of Sony enjoys playing Mario games much more than his own PS4 games. So sad and pathetic, PS4 games suck so badly !

I always like nintendo... always have always will i also like  xbox and playstation... but i what i cant stand is critical people calling them selves hardcore gamers.. and now i may get a bashing for this i dont give a  rats ass........ but  the only thing i see in games now a days are guns... so   without naming yearly release like fifa and other sports game name 10 games with  out a gun/sniper rifle in it..... all i see is battle field this cod that kill zone, tom clanceys ghost recon.. if you call ur self a hardcore game for just playing these type of genre games then.. ur living in a dream world.... hardcore gamers play all type of games not just one type .. this is my opinion and opinions always count.. im allowed it and that what im sticking by

This just goes to show how stupid the console "war" really is. The console makers themselves don't take it seriously at all. They might play around with each other when it comes to hype and publicity, but they actually respect each other and play all the other systems on their own time. It's too bad so many gamers can't seem to follow suit.

Was it any different from Sony and Microsoft congratulating each other on their console releases recently?

The Wii-U failing is not something that any of us should want. Competition spurs innovation.

""Nintendo helps raise and teaches the fun of games to people just starting out. I think that's a very important thing in this industry."

I always said that. Nintendo is very good on converting non gamers to gamers. Is a very solid platform, with a very specific target.

"Already-hardcore" gamers need to understand that we are not the only demographic in gaming.

Positive News? Wow Wii U bashing is over then. Next up The OUYA. That thing is the biggest fail since the Wii U. LOL Just joking. Seriously we're all gamers lets talk about games and stop trying to kill consoles.

I still think it's funny when haters who prefer the other consoles, especially Playstation in this regard say that Nintendo's systems are only for fanboys, babies, and immature man children yet here we have Yoshida showing his support for the system. Seriously guys, it's a gaming system, not a way of life, not a religion, or whatever, no one's forcing you to like anything and just because you like a certain system or company doesn't make you "insert offensive terms here." For most people, videogames is a hobby, a fun past time, something additional in their everyday lives. Assuming that they're "whatever offensive thing you can think of" just because they play on a Nintendo/Sony/Microsoft system is extremely stupid. Imagine your entire being being judged based on the sports team you like? Sound stupid eh? Well that's exactly what you guys do when you judge someone based on the console they play.

Even though I love Nintendo, I'm waiting for the day I can play Mario on my X1.

@moesuir The only thing about this I find sad are the people who feel they must bash things in order to make themselves feel better about not owning them. All 3 of the main next gen consoles are awesome in their own right and have much to offer their owners.

@SPENDO I think you're generalizing, but I do feel you. Most of the current games involves shooting... Complete lack of creativity...

@abHS4L88To be fair you are very defensive of Nintendo. Nothing wrong with that since you never take it to the extreme. Like I said Nintendo just needs to convince others is a good buy. I think I might finally pick up a Wii U because of the Smash Bros and the Mario kart footage. Too bad no release dates tho. Oh and about your sports team analogy. Yeah that actually happens in real life. Sad but people will judge you for that. Nothing wrong with liking your favorite team(Game company) as long as you aren't a fanatic.

@omar_q  The greater are the chance to play Halo on the Nintendo console, over Mario on Microsoft console.

@meatz666 @SPENDO i agree..... its just shoot go online and prestige and then camp lol...........dont get me wrong i still play mw3 online and whilst i still enjoy it they made it so impossible with some people to get kills.. when they jump around like halo all the time.. and jump and go straight into a lie down position i find that such a weak flaw in a game...

I'm pretty much against ignorance, and when it comes to Nintendo, that's when ignorance tends to be the strongest. I do take jabs at those who do the same against Microsoft and Sony (or anyone else) although since I'm not as particularly interested in Sony/Microsoft news as much (since I only own a PS3 right now and no longer own a 360) I don't see it as frequently. I know Nintendo does a lot of things that are rather confusing for most people (I almost always can understand why they're doing what they're doing, but I get confused sometimes) but it's no reason to get super worked up and wish for the company's failure.

2014 does look like a strong year for the system, and Nintendo is adding more on both the retail and digital front so that's always a good thing. We know Nintendo doesn't like to reveal release dates until like 2 months before the game launches (I guess it's just in case the game needs to be pushed back).

I'm aware, although I'm not into sports, such idiocy does happen, but I wanted to give people on here another take just to see how stupid it is to judge someone based on what they like.

RevLux

@vetar1@omar_q That actually is true. Despite having poor sales with the Wii U Nintendo as a company, which only makes games and consoles, is far more profitable than the gaming divisions of both Microsoft and Sony. The 3DS had a very slow start as well but was able to dramatically turn it's sales around. I don't expect the Wii U to out sell the PS4 or XB1 but once it's most beloved franchises finally hit the system these cries portending Nintendo's doom should dissipate -as they always do.

@vetar1@omar_qThe possibility of MS leaving the console business has been openly raised. So in a sense you are right - although I think Windows isn't going anywhere and the Halo franchise might just become PC-only, maybe PC+PS in that scenario. Who knows though. Also I don't think MS will leave the business. But it has come up

omar_q
omar_q

@vetar1 @omar_q There's no chance of that cuz a Nintendo console would explode trying to run it.

@ExplicitMike@abHS4L88 Unfortunately this is the first high definition Nintendo system. This pushes the time between games, which was already quite long, to the extreme. As they get more accustomed to the challenges of h.d. game creation they will get better and the process will take less and less time.

@19James89@bunchanumbers@abHS4L88 As far as Rayman is concerned Ubi did it to themselves by not keeping it exclusive to Wii U. I'd love to see a zombi U 2 but that seems highly unlikely. Its a shame because Ubisoft really got their stuff together. Ah well at least the Wii U library is more varied than people like to claim.

19James89

@abHS4L88 I concur, but it is nice to be able to have third party games just in case any game takes my fancy.

@meatz666

What a lot of people seem to not understand is that there's a HUGE difference between "childish" and "childlike." Many of Nintendo's games have that "childlike" quality since it's about simple joy and fun, imagination, and sharing the experience with friends in person whereas immaturity, finding joy in juvenile themes and focusing on shallow features are all very "childish" things.

abHS4L88
abHS4L88

@19James89 @bunchanumbers

I'm pretty much over most Western 3rd party games, many of them have been getting worse in quality as time goes by and I hate how every single one I've played was over when the ending credits rolled and I've never once felt compelled to replay the game, not even with Mass Effect (and I tried and wasn't enjoying it).

abHS4L88
abHS4L88

@19James89
CoD wasn't much of a seller on the Wii yet that didn't stop them so I think Activison will continue, plus they make way too much money on that franchise so it's not like it's breaking bank just to make a Wii U version.

abHS4L88

@bunchanumbers

Would've definitely gotten Rayman Legends had it launched when it was supposed to, still haven't picked it up since it launched when other games I wanted came out instead. I do plan on getting Watch Dogs and maybe Child of Light. AC3 left such a bad taste in my mouth that I'm going to wait until ACIV is cheap before picking it up.

19James89
19James89

@bunchanumbers@abHS4L88@19James89Well the thing is I cannot see us getting any Ubisoft support next year apart from Watchdogs, Child of Light and Just Dance 2015. I doubt they'll release another AC game on the Wii U and I'll be surprised if Activision bring out another Call of Duty on the Wii U.

I may have to purchase a PS4 after all. :/

bunchanumbers
bunchanumbers

@abHS4L88 @19James89 There are many Ubisoft games I will be purchasing. Never thought I'd be saying that. AC4, Watchdogs, Child of Light, Rayman Legends. Not only that there's TW101, Bayo 2, and indie games like Pier Solar and Soul Saga. My Wii U will not be hurting for games.

abHS4L88

@19James89
While Nintendo does plenty of interesting things with Mario and Zelda, I've always found it interesting the creative liberties they take with the Kirby franchise despite it not being anywhere near as popular as Mario and Zelda, and for that reason it's become one of my favorite franchises of Nintendo.

Yarn Yoshi does seem like the spiritual successor to Epic Yarn since it seems to combine the gameplay of Epic Yarn with Yoshi's mechanics.

But yeah, that's why I've been saying that at this point, Nintendo has probably recognized that there's really not much they can do with 3rd party support aside from strengthening relations with those who currently support them. They've done their part as well as many 3rd parties but neither can force consumers to buy 3rd party games.

bunchanumbers
bunchanumbers

@19James89 @abHS4L88 @ExplicitMike I fully intend to buy all my 3rd party games on Wii U. the only time I will get it on PC is if it isn't released on Wii U.

I completely get where you're coming from there. Many said the same thing about the GCN. Then when the option to get it on GCN or PS2 came up they always went ps2.

19James89
19James89

@abHS4L88@ExplicitMikeI own 9 Wii U games, 5 of those are third party games. I'm annoyed at Nintendo gamers who whinge about a lack of third party support and then don't bother buying third party games. Now it's not for me to try and force those gamers into buying games that don't appeal to them, but those gamers have no right to complain about a lack of third party support on their system when all they have sitting on their shelf is first and second party games.

How W101 hasn't even sold 100,000 units out of an install base of 4.5 million is beyond me? I bet if it had Mario or Zelda in the game it would have sold a million units. Nintendo gamers are a strange bunch, if it's not Mario or Zelda it just won't sell and that is why Nintendo focus primarily on these two franchises and I'm delighted that Kirby is getting another outing on the 3DS. I just hope Kirby's Epic Yarn 2 makes an appearance on the Wii U.

abHS4L88
abHS4L88

@ExplicitMike

And yet all of them sold poorly, that's when I get annoyed at the Nintendo community. They wonder why 3rd parties pass up Nintendo's systems and really, power is hardly ever a factor, it's the simple fact that the games don't sell.

ExplicitMike
ExplicitMike

@abHS4L88 No confirmation of that. If that did happen. I would drive to the store right now and buy a Wii U. I am not kidding. Both were good, But While the first had a more interesting story the second had more uniqueness. Funny how the Wii had four of the most violent profane games of last gen. Madworld,House of the Dead Overkill, and No more heroes 1 and 2.

abHS4L88
abHS4L88

@ExplicitMike

Any confirmation on that yet? I never played the first one but I thoroughly enjoyed the 2nd. I was sad when I found out Cing closed down since they made my favorite non Nintendo Wii game (it was 2nd party) The Little King's Story.

Waiting does suck but for some reason, I've found myself buried under a large pile of games that I want to complete so it keeps me patient as long as I always have something to play (having other hobbies helps too).

ExplicitMike
ExplicitMike

@abHS4L88 I cannot stress enough how that annoys me. Yeah quality is always good. But is the waiting that bothers me. Releases are too far apart. Kinda like now. When the Wii U needs the most games for the Holiday. Like I said tho I will finally take the plunge the beginning of the year. I am still holding out for No more heroes 3. My most favorite Nintendo wii third party game.

abHS4L88
abHS4L88

@ExplicitMike

Indeed, I mean personally, Zelda and Mario aren't even my favorite franchises under them and I'm certain that if they do go 3rd party, most of my favorite franchises under them will never see the light of day again, just like what happened with SEGA.

I have no doubts they're hard at work creating a great deal of amazing games, problem is is that development is taking long than expected plus this is Nintendo, the developer that pretty much demands perfection in each of their major titles.

ExplicitMike
ExplicitMike

@abHS4L88 The only reason people want Nintendo to die is because they want the occasional Nintendo game (Example Zelda) but don't wanna buy a whole New console for it. I get that. But doing that defeats the purpose of exclusives in the first place. Which is why the shouldn't leave the console market. (My Opinion) We are basically forcing Nintendo to try harder with their games. The poor sales might force Nintendo to make drastic flood of good games. Eventually they might be back on track.

snacky_smorez
snacky_smorez

Um. Based on current Wii U sales, PS4, Bone, PC and the upcoming steam machines, the games industry doesn't really need Nintendo anymore.

19James89
19James89

@dysonlu It's not a possibility, Nintendo have always said that if they stop making hardware then they'll stop making software. Nintendo has shown it is able to adapt and change and enter completely new markets and make a success.

Nintendo could quite easily take their billions, leave gaming altogether and enter a completely different business sector and be successful. Nintendo doesn't need the games industry half as much as the games industry needs Nintendo.

ExplicitMike
ExplicitMike

@dysonluIf any of that could happen it would it happened a long time ago. Like when Sega died. All three (MS,Sony,Nintendo) have dropped the ball many times. Yet, they're all still around. Money makes the world go around.  All three have plenty to go around and gain. These companies are not going anywhere.

@ExplicitMike

MS could exit the gaming console market and sell the Halo properties.

Nintendo could exit the console hardware market and become strictly a game software company, which means they would make games for other consoles.

These are possibilities.

vetar1

@ExplicitMike @vetar1  True, but if anyone would left the gaming business, it would be Mircrosoft, Nintendo will be the last.

@vetar1Neither will happen. MS and Nintendo have too much money to ever sell their properties on their competitors.

vetar1

@omar_q @vetar1  I didnt say this Nintendo console. Nintendo is gaming company and its very very healthy, they dont have other business over gaming unlike Microsoft and Sony.

From the time when Microsoft entered the console market had huge losses, even Sony gaming business is not good, unlike Nintendo.
