PlayStation 4 will work with Xbox One's HDMI pass-through port

Users will be able to access the PlayStation 4's video signal through the Xbox One dashboard.

by

The Xbox One's HDMI pass-through port will support "any HDMI device", including the PlayStation 4, Microsoft confirmed during its presentation at the Tokyo Game Show.

During the presentation, Xbox senior director of product management and planning Albert Panello received a question regarding the Xbox One's ability to support video feed from the PlayStation 4, which he did not respond to directly.

Later in the presentation, when Panello discussed the Xbox One's ability to snap applications to the side of the screen during gameplay, he said "any application can be snapped to a game…this could be the live TV feed, so if you wanted to be playing Ryse and Killzone at the same time, you could snap that."

Killzone is a first-person shooter series exclusive to Sony consoles. The newest entry to the series, Killzone: Shadow Fall, is an upcoming PlayStation 4-exclusive title.

The confirmation from Microsoft that the Xbox One will not block the PlayStation 4's video signal comes shortly after Sony revealed that it will not prevent users from capturing video from the PlayStation 4's HDMI port.

The Xbox One is scheduled for launch in North America, most European markets, Australia, and New Zealand on November 22 this year, with follow-up releases in Japan and the remaining European markets in 2014.

This is useful if you have a television with only a few HDMI ports,  and they were both already in use.

OK, so do I have this right? You can chain together A PS4 into a XBONE and then into the TV so that you can run the two simultaneously? I'm kind of confused.

the only way i could see me doing this is if i was playing a PS4 and also wanted to chat to friends who are playing XB1 or show them the PS4 games i was playing

on a second note i wonder if the PS3 and 360 wil also work through the XB1?

My flat screen already has PIP and split screen so this is just another useless feature on the xbone..

You know Gamespot, on days when there is no real news, you could probably get away with not publishing anything instead of trying to make non-stories into something.

IDEA!!  Chain together 3 XBone's in a sequence of PiP to play all of the Xbone's worthwhile titles at the same time.

Now to find 3 people who are actually opting to buy this thing...

Come on now guys, you can't use a PS4 or TV without an Xbox One.

So basically this allows PIP, I appreciate the multimedia aspects MS is working on to add to their new machine. I just hope they remember that this needs to be a video game console first and tv device second - way second.

No matter the architecture, no matter the dedicated video chip, no matter the RAM - this will still use resources (especially if the xbox1 can record content coming in from the second device) that you think would be allocated toward graphics and physics in a video game. Just an hdmi pass through alone costs, costs that would reduce the consoles price or allow more ram to be added toward gaming and not the OS.

Just my rant- but I didn't build my gaming PC to be used as the living room DVR so the gf could watch desperate housewives, while I am playing skyrim at the same time. I want all of the available resources of my pc directed toward one goal - eye bleeding graphics and fps of the game I happen to be playing at the time.

I'm not sure if I should say cool or just laugh. Let me debate this some more while I eat cookies.

So they're trying to win people over by talking about hooking up a PS4 to it.

I think I'll be one of about four people on the planet plugging their Wii U into their Xbox One.

Ummmmm aren't there other devices on the market that already do this? Not knocking the system at all but I would think that during the initial launch of these systems that most people will have one or the other so this feature wont be used to do it with ps4 you know what im saying lol. I play all game systems so I aint no fan boy but this is something that doesn't really need to be published like its such a big fucking deal.

@lilj2626 isn't it obvious.. so you can buy a PS4 and a XBONE to play your PS4 through your XBONE....

Don't forget you can pay for Xbox TV service to watch TV through the XBONE connected to your TV box via the PS4 which you paid for & the TV box which you also pay for..so you pay twice.

But before you can connect your PS4 to the XBONE you have to connect it to your Nintendo2DS and have a mass orgy.

Because fuck logic.

tl;dr there is no point to it.

@SoreBastard technically yes you could since the xbox can run multiple programs at once. There's really no point to this but people were asking microsoft if they allowed it and they answered with a yes

The machine needs to be whatever you want it to be. The majority of my use time of the machine will be for TV and video so the X1 better be excellent at the non-gaming stuff. Most of my family members will never touch a video game and they will be using Xbox every single day.

@mikees1 It's Microscams attempt to sell more xbones. "Look, you can play your PS4 through our system" Please buy it now..

But the Xbox One has a much better lineup of exclusive games: Forza, Dead Rising, Killer Instinct, Crimson Dragon, Peggle 2, Ryse, Project Spark, Zoo Tycoon, Titanfall, PvZ Garden Warfare, Quantum Break, Sunset Overdrive, Fable Legends, Halo, Fantasia, Kinect Sports, etc. Why would you need a PS4 for games?

crazyrage23

@Mr_Big_Boss No.. People wouldn't stop asking about it... so microsoft answered and said that it was possible.... read please

@bigtimemad They publish "Pro" gaming results and news so I wouldn't be too shocked at this.

@C8M I trully am surprised, I really did not think there was a 'you', a targeted demographic MS was making its tv multimedia gaming device for. I just really did not think there was a person willing to spend $500 dollar for a tv device, that records, plays blu ray, and apps.. and can even play video games decently. I appreciate all the things the box can do - but it amazes me that there are alot of gamers out in the world who want a console for more then just gaming. I guess ms was right.

CaveManCobb

@XbotDestroyer @mikees1 Its hardly an attempt. They said that ANY hdmi device could be used with the pass though and gave the ps4 as an example because they are the competitors. It would also work with a wiiu or a ps3. Don't try to discount some one elses choice in the system they buy it makes you look childish.

@C8M "Better" is subjective dude. Out of those games you listed the only ones that even remotely interest me are Titanfall, Dead Rising 3, and to a lesser extent Halo. You saying the Xbox One's line up is better is just a matter of your opinion and holds no weight in an argument.

tom2750
tom2750

the games Sony announced are better for example the order 1886 will be better then every single game you said almost all those games either look really average or generic halo of great another game in a series that just gets worse and worse a series that was not that good to begin with quantum break looks like Microsoft's poor attempt at a story driven game something the ps3 was a master at the ps4 has announced better games only difference is they haven't announced that much info on them because they are coming out in late 2014 most of them and anyway the 360 had a better launch then the ps3 and look how that turned out the 360 had almost no good exclusives but the ps3 pumped out dozens upon dozens of great games some so great they are called masterpieces all the 360 really had was forza, fable, gears of war and halo and altho none of them were terrible they weren't masterpieces far from it even calling them great makes me cringe they are the type of games to pick up on sale from the bargain bin for $20

@C8M @jenovaschilld holy shit.... some logic was actually use for once on this site! I love you mysterious logic man. Someone else understands marketing!

C8M
C8M

@jenovaschilld The market for a general purpose computing/entertainment device is much bigger than the market for a game console. Look at tablet sales, smartphones, PCs, cable subscriptions, DVD players, etc. All are much bigger and much more widely adopted than game consoles.

I have a family of 5 and I am the only gamer in the household. If I hook up the Xbox to my TV all of my family members are now forced to use the Xbox every day, something they would never otherwise do. Maybe only gamers will buy Xbox, but the majority of people who use the console will not be core gamers

Kracka2205
Kracka2205

@C8M @Kracka2205 It's still a matter of your opinion. That's precisely what subjective means. I'm not saying that my opinion outweighs yours by any means, mine is just as subjective. Historically I've felt that Sony's exclusives tend to be better, but that's just my opinion. As far as AAA pedigree goes I don't agree with your assessment. Driveclub is developed by the guys who did Motorstorm, hardly a failure. Knack is being developed by SCE Japan Studio which is a quite respected and accomplished developer (Ico, Shadow of the Colossus) along with Mark Cerny who is also a very accomplished game designer. As far as Killzone goes even Killzone 3 which was the weakest one still got mostly positive reviews, and Killzone 2 was one of the best shooters on PS3. Sure they might have not sold quite as well as Halo but that doesn't change the fact that they're great games. Also you conveniently left out Infamous Second Son. Being a big fan of the first two that game alone is reason enough for me to get a PS4. As far as The Order goes I agree, We still know next to nothing about it so I can't really comment on it. But then again the same goes for Quantum Break on X1, we've still seen hardly anything about it. Peggle and PvZ don't interest me. Titanfall will be on PC (and will probably come to PS4 as well at some point later). And also we still don't even know that some of Sony's other top studios like Naughty Dog and SCEA Santa Monica are even working on yet. Now don't get me wrong, I'm no fanboy, I have a PS3, a 360, and a PC, I just love to play games no matter what the platform. I'll definitely be getting a X1 at some point, probably after a price drop and a redesign.

C8M
C8M

@Kracka2205 @C8M I don't think it is subjective. MS has announced much better AAA pedigree games from companies that have made multi-million selling franchises. Whether it is Remedy (Max Payne) or Insomniac (Ratchet & Clank) or Respawn (Call of Duty), these developers have a proven track record of hit games. Sony has announced a bunch of middling indie games of unknown quality, a couple of new games of unknown dubious quality from unproven developers (Driveclub, Knack, The Order) and sequels to PS games that have done poorly (Killzone). You have to be really biased to not admit MS has announced better games at this point. They even have a bunch of EA exclusives (Peggle, PvZ Garden Warfare, Titanfall) and exclusive content for Battlefield and FIFA. I appreciate that some people are just rooting for Sony, but the games Sony has announced are much weaker than the X1 lineup.
