PlayStation 4 will support four controllers

The PlayStation 4 will allow four controllers to be used with the machine at once, Sony confirms.

by

Sony's PlayStation 4 will support up to four controllers simultaneously, the company has announced.

SCE Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida confirmed the PS4's controller support on Twitter, following news that Microsoft's Xbox One will allow for eight controllers.

The PlayStation 3 can support up to seven controllers, though few games take advantage of this capability.

The PlayStation 4 will come with a single DualShock 4 controller, and Sony has announced that red and blue variants of the controller will be introduced shortly after launch. The new controller features a touch pad, light bar, and a Share button.

The recommended retail price for DualShock 4 is £54/€59/$59.

The PlayStation 4 will launch on November 15 in North America for $399, and on November 29 in Europe for €399/£349.

It would be really sweet if they would take advantage of atleast two controllers for local co op modes in new games now. There is basically no games out there that I can play with my wife. I don't see why games like COD and other shooters can't have a co op campaign anymore? It's just really disappointing to have to take turns playing when they could have just made a local co op mode.

X1 can support NO CONTROLLERS!

This day and age most need 2 at max with the world of multiplayer now. People tend to not game when socialising in person and then game with friends online when having a quiet day in.

Back at a time when you could pick up cheap controllers at £5 and multiplayer gaming was none existent 4+ controllers would have been perfect but like I believe, times have changed.

Considering that local multiplayer games are slowly becoming rare in favor for online multiplayer, usually one player per console, I don't see much of a need for the consoles to support 4 controllers or even 8, but it's still cool that they do. I have 4 controllers for both my xbox 360 and ps4 and I rarely used more than 1 controller this gen. What a waste of money those extra controllers have been this gen. I'll stick to just buying 2 controllers each next gen.

Lol, how is this news, four is the number to be expected.

I've never found any use for the 7 remotes on PS3, and i barely even used more than two.

Max i've ever used was four and it was in rare occasions, few games are worth playing with four members at the same time, LBP being one of them.

I really don't care if it only supports two controllers. I honestly have barely played with two players the whole 5+ years I've had my PS3. I guess I care for those of you who plan on playing with multiple friends. Laugh at me all you want. I can take it.

See, with TVs now coming with that dual display feature where it can show two full screen games at the same time, and players use the 3d glasses to see only their screen, then technically you can have 2 screens of 4 players per screen giving 8 players.  Maybe thats why X1 supports 8 controllers?  Sony doesn't seem interested in that kind of gameplay though i guess since its less common.

anyone remember how sony fanboys whined about the 360 supporting only up only 4 controllers? amusing to see the sudden change of hearts.

I'm a solitary gamer. One controller is enough for me.

I only need 2 controllers

Okay but as a PS4 guy. Microsoft just bitched slapped Sony with 8 controllers. It does not mmatter if the screen is big enough but 4 controllers only is really bad, what about games like WWE, monopoly and even every sports game like fifa, and nba where you can have more than 4 players. Sony did really badly.

MrMilkmann

Who has a screen big enough to fit 8 people on it comfortably anyway? My screen is huge and even playing some games in co-op with my brother it was hard to see.

With the internet having made it's way into gaming consoles, the need for more then 2 controllers is virtually nil.

The X1 will support 8 sony smh what happened to next gen (although my tv isn't big enough to support 4 people let alone 8 and where am I suppose to come up with that many friends) Ps4 wins by default

i wish they had 30 controllers so we could all be "mind blown" playing knack at the same time!

You can't do 5 people Royal Rumble on PS4.

Since no one ever comes over to play games anymore, and even if it happened it would probably never be more than 3 people, this doesn't really affect me.  Still, I find it odd since there are some cases where it would be useful.  My only guess would be the coloured light is the limitation here.

At least now there's no reason to buy more than three.

I remember when it was announced the PS3 could use 7 controllers and the Xbox could use 4.

The fanboys of Sony launched a serious offensive, attacking the fewer controllers and singing about how great 7 controllers would be. A generation later we find ourselves in the reverse position and the Sony fanboys are now saying "who needs more than four, four doesn't make sense at all".

Now I know the people here and those fans back in the day aren't all the same people but it's still an amusing observation.

Have used 7 controllers at once multiple times, this is a shame... I was at least hoping to have the number of users stay the same, not decrease.

@zpluffy It clearly states 8, so this is the lamest "joke" ever.

@Bezee4u 4 is actually more than enough already :) If the other will support 8 controllers, does that mean 8 split screens (depending on the game) ??? I'll find it hard to play the game anymore :/

@REALJOKER

I agree, but there still exists the problem with 8-player games that you need 8 controllers. I think 4 is about all I'm willing to buy.

Jinzo_111887
Jinzo_111887

@REALJOKER Genesis version of Monopoly had the controller passed around, so it's not an issue for it. The main problem is sports.

Jinzo_111887
Jinzo_111887

@MrMilkmann Only thing I can think of is sport games, but for multiple controllers, only things I can think of are the move/nav control combos. If the system could be hook up to two TVs, that would make sense. (That explains why the PS3 had support for 7 controllers.)

Jinzo_111887
Jinzo_111887

@twyz You mean own more than four at a time. You might have to buy more if they break easily for some reason.

@Sw33tEscape

Yeah it is suppose to be a lame joke. I'm just trying to imply that it "can," meaning it has the functionality to support no controllers. I'm just making a little satire on ways you can get kinected.

JKeyz90
JKeyz90

@binbin90 it's probably only going to matter for sports games when there is a bunch of people around......just a thought

MrMilkmann
MrMilkmann

@Jinzo_111887 @MrMilkmann Yeah, sports games I guess, but even then, can't everybody just get online together? May be a stupid question, but I haven't bought a sports game in years. Really the only game I played with more than 2 controllers was Little Big Planet. IDC if I get bitched at, that game was fun as shit.

Sw33tEscape
Sw33tEscape

@zpluffy @Sw33tEscape Wow, I can't believe I've blocked out Kinect so much that, that went totally over my head.

That or, I'm so used to the Xbox bashing I just assumed it was another variation of "Xbox One is useless."
