PlayStation 4 voice commands limited for launch

Sony confirms users cannot "wake up" system or pause videos using their voice; no third-party apps will support voice commands right away.

by

PlayStation 4 voice commands via the PlayStation Camera will be limited at launch, Sony confirmed to Engadget during the company's review event this week in New York City.

First, users will not be able to "wake up" the PS4 while in standby voice through voice commands, nor can they pause videos. What's more, no third-party PS4 apps will support voice commands.

A Sony representative said the company is hopeful that more apps will feature voice integration in the future. Increased functionality overall for voice commands is expected down the road, the representative said.

Players will, however, be able to turn off the PS4 and launch games using voice commands. In addition, the PlayStation Camera can be used to take screenshots. At launch in North America on Friday, six languages will be supported for voice commands: English (US and UK), Spanish (European), Italian, French (European), German, Japanese. More will follow as part of future system software updates

Engadget notes that few voice commands were demonstrated during presentations this week, and no gesture commands were shown whatsoever.

The PlayStation Camera for PS4--sold separately for $60--also supports facial recognition, allowing players to sign into their profiles using their face.

Microsoft is taking a decidedly different approach with its Xbox One, which launches on November 22. Every $500 system is bundled with Kinect, which can be used for an array of functions, including booting the system up, shutting it down, and controlling numerous applications, among other things.

Not like I would ever use this feaute. Ever.

The day this stuff becomes mandatory is the day I go somewhere else for my entertainment. Actually, I'm already looking at building a gaming PC - I'm just waiting to see what the SteamOS will be like (no way am I getting Windows)

Fine by me considering I don't plan on using my voice to control my PS4. I probably won't do that until it becomes pretty much necessary. And I don't see that happening soon, if at all. LOL, nevermind, it involves the camera, of course. No camera for me, ever.

No worries , the support will be there on the second or third patch! Confirmed source is pushsquare.com

ah, bolcrap, if they were the cams would be practically on par! Not to mention that the the kinnect doesnt support the AR like the PS camera does! They were both thinkin up there own ideas, voice commands are  barely what u would call a copy , smart phones do voice commands to =/

If I ever design a game console it will have a function similar to the medicine cabinets in THX-1138. When you quit out of a game the console will ask "What's wrong?" :P

You can tell this feature was just thrown in at the last minute. Sony trying their best to copy Microsoft's Kinect. If no one wants voice, why is Sony added it. lol!! So much damage control on this new thread.

Heck, i dont mind, let them take there time with this feature!

Don't really care as someone who suffers from a vocal disability I could never use any voice commands on any device.

NO ONE WANTS VOICE COMMANDS!!!! they are stupid and never work right.

why is this such a big deal? i find lazier to push a button than say "playstation four, close the games, say hi to facebook and turn off the system, camera, controller, no, wait, playstation four log into mymusic with the john@doe.mneh account with xxxxxxx password, turn on the mysense music, resume all downloads and make me a sandwitch"... "what? how to say hi?"

yes. i rather push a button.

I'm not liking how Sony is releasing all kinds of bad news 1 week before launch. First with the DRM, privacy and monitoring issues then no IR and no voice controls. What next?

I think this camera is just a stupid gimmick for Sony to try and say that the PS4 can do everything an Xbox One can do. Except, the Kinect has been out and been tested for years now, constantly improving and becoming more intelligent. The xbox is designed with a fully Kinect integrated UI, this PS4 camera is a stupid POS that nobody will buy or use.

Sorry but this Sony product is a fail. Since the Kinect will be on every Xbox One system, developers will actually be willing to make some awesome games with it knowing they are targeting the entire xbox audience. Those games will never be on the PS4

Cool Voice commands aren't something that's necessary for success but are a nice feature to have. Looks like Sony's camera will be on par with Xbox's original Kinect camera on the 360 with voice command accessibility coming in incrementally through various updates.

Does anybody know if the PS3's camera (PSEye i think) will work on PS4?

This doesn't seem too surprising considering they've never really pushed the voice commands as a feature.  Seems like they've always focused more on showcasing the augmented reality stuff, which leaves it apparent that they can add voice/gesture commands and whatnot whenever they have time to focus on less important things like that.  Seems pretty smart to let Xbox do it first and see if people even really like to use it on a frequent enough basis to see if it is even worth adding in the first place.

Buying a console is all about "games".

NOT "TV".

NOT "sports".

NOT "voice commands".

But "games".

Who weighs in the issue of "voice commands" when buying a console?

Lol.

well considering they only just recently told us we could use voice and gesture controls, id say that what i would expect.

Sony never marketed the voice tech which was prefectly fine to me. If they add more to it thats a plus but it is definitely not anything to bat an eye at.

I probably wont even get a camera for a long while after I get my PS4. Until they offer something worth using the camera for. I heard they were creating a VR HMD that will utilize the camera for head tracking so that is when I might consider getting one.

I find myself remembering the Sony commercials when the Kinect and whatever Sony's motion thing was called, the Move I think. One of them went something like this

"We have what we call 'buttons'." Why do we need fancy vc for shit? It's the same principle as having a touch screen thing in your car. I don't need or want that shit, give me buttons and knobs and dials god damn it.

not to sound like a fan-boy but voice command is a cool feature but not a necessary feature ( e.g controller) so guys relax.

What? No Voice Command to tell it to wake up versus just getting up and pressing the on button or using the remote?  Deal breaker!!!!  Lazy people

Why talk to a machine like a crazy person when you can just press a button ? Since when are buttons so hard to use?

@pa_amb_tomaquet The only voice command I wouldn't mind working is "Make Sammich" and "Get drink." But that's too advanced for now.

cvantu
cvantu

@pa_amb_tomaquet voice commands work quite well on the first gen Kinect. I can Bing search anything with my voice and it is literally 99% accurate. Maybe your voice doesn't work right. I don't know.

cvantu

@ZombieGuyGeorge I found it more immersive in Skyrim to be able to change weapons, shields, and spells, to whatever hand preferred, on the fly, without needing to pause the game, all through my voice alone. I can say, "equip spark spell left...equip fire spell right" and I will equip one on my left hand and one on my right. With a controller, this ability is absolutely cumbersome. So yes, with a limited perception like yours, I couldn't see the use, but there is a use.

blackace

@Blazen702 Then the patch that they said would never be needed. lol!! No Blu-Ray/DVD play back or Remote play out of the box. Cant believe you can play music CD's. That's just crazy. I'm going to try it anyways when I get my PS4.

@Blazen702

But I must say it's pretty sad that you need to pick up your controller and press a button to wake the console up instead of talking to your console and then picking up your controller.   /s

There is no "bad news".   Only the retards freak out about all this FUD.

ninjaroach81

@djdan200 That's exactly what I think.  With every X1 shipping with a Kinect 2, developers will have an incentive to develop for it, learn how to use it, and come up with some interesting ways to integrate it into their games while, at best, PS4 will have some Move-specific games (like we have now with the current Kinect- and Move-only games) or some developers will add some basic Move-compatible features to some of their games (not a whole lot, though, since they don't know how big the audience for Move will be).  I still think Kinect is a generation away from being really good, but everything we're hearing is that Kinect 2 is a big upgrade.

revlux88
revlux88

@djdan200 Except that Sony was the first to have a camera that could sense the player and use motion to interact with gameplay. The ps2 eye toy, then ps3 eye were both out well before Kinect. All consoles copy off all other consoles (except maybe Nintendo that that is the exception which proves the rule.)

revlux88
revlux88

@hammoud The playstation Eye will not work on the ps4. The move controllers will work on the new p.s. camera for the ps4 though on certain games. (yet to be announced)

djdan200

@Queuingreturns I think it is kind of nice I dont have to switch between a bunch of different inputs and devices to do different things. I also think its really nice for the first time I can do everything like watch TV hands free. I actually think that is fucking awesome. It just feels kind of futuristic to me

tonyleo01
tonyleo01

@Queuingreturns yeah that was pretty much ps3 for the first years. Now ps4 is finally more intuitive like the 360. So... when ps5 comes out, it will be more like XBone?

BorgMind00
BorgMind00

@daikkenaurora12 Funny you should mention that because, this is pretty much the same argument that popped up when remote controls were introduced to the television. People said well, why is this needed, what's wrong with getting up and walking to the TV to change the channel.

djmellowd

@sladakrobot They are morons because they don't know how hard is to make a good voice support. MICROSOFT really makes it the best possible, SONY in my opion just want to have it not to be worse but it will be shi**y.

ZombieGuyGeorge
ZombieGuyGeorge

@cvantu @ZombieGuyGeorge first: absolutely cumbersome? 90% of this kind of games games have quickequip. 2.- does skyrim support voice commands? i mean, really?

now, i wasnt saying voice commands are bad, but turning the system on and off with voice commands is just plain lazy. even with the time it gets to turn it on, three seconds is too much for people to wait? is that really a deal breaker, will you cancel your pre-order because you can't turn it on with voice commands?

i don't think you understand my point, please try reading my comment with the word "sarcasm" in mind, but even if so, that's having a limited perception, there's your alternative comment: "i cancelled my eleven months preorder because I am too lazy to turn my system with a button." and read it with sarcasm.  there. be happy.

revlux88
revlux88

@dysonlu @Blazen702 I have to agree. It's not truly next gen if you can't verbally tell your console to wake up.

//preorder cancelled

ninjaroach81
ninjaroach81

@revlux88 @djdan200 That may be true, but by not including PS Camera with every PS4, it doesn't seem like Sony has a whole lot of faith in it.  MS, by shipping Kinect 2 with every X1, is showing that they believe in the tech, that they want to see it develop and get better.

blobby-blobby
blobby-blobby

@BorgMind00

But in this scenario you aren't lazy because using a controller to turn on the system is just as easy you are more won over by gimmicks

cvantu
cvantu

@Sun-Tzu-GE @daikkenaurora12 Nah, you're just a small minded idiot who can't see the value that voice abilities bring. Voice commands can be used as extra buttons in games that have larger inventory systems, and they keep from you having to pause the game every time you want to equip or mess with inventory. Try using the Kinect with Skyrim. You can equip weapons, spells, use potions, and equip everything to whatever preferred hand, all with your voice, and all with never having to pause the game. Tell me how easy it is, with a controller, to equip one spell in one hand, then another preferred spell in the other hand, then switch to a shield when needed. I'm sure you'll say it is so super easy, but a game like Skyrim (to me) is more fun in real time, and never having to pause the game is a bigger benefit.

Gimmicks aren't always gimmicks. MS also proved the voice command ease of Xbox One when it comes to snapping on the fly, and recording game video and uploading on the fly. You can jump apps on the fly without needing to cycle through menus (which is like how Skyrim works).
