PlayStation 4 to get PS1/PS2 emulator - Report

PlayStation Now will only be used to stream PlayStation 3 titles for now, says Digital Foundry source.

A new report on Digital Foundry has said that the PlayStation 4 will gain the ability to locally emulate PS1 and PS2 titles.

The anonymous source, reported to be working on Sony's PlayStation Now streaming technology, says that the cloud streaming tech is only currently scheduled to support PlayStation 3 titles for now.

Sony's internal emulator is already used on the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita, but the incarnation in the works for PlayStation 4 is said to be aiming for the ability to run the games in native HD resolutions. This would offer a distinct visual advantage over the current PS1/PS2 upscaling, and open up visual options seen in emulators like PCSX2. Running classic PlayStation games locally on your PS4 would also mean that any of the potential downsides of streaming--such as input lag--would be non-existent.

PlayStation Now is expected to launch in the US this summer, and was announced at the start of 2014. So far the service has been only been shown running PlayStation 3 titles, predominantly Naughty Dog's excellent The Last of Us.

For more information on Sony's ambitious cloud streaming service, GameSpot has compiled everything currently known about PlayStation Now into one article.

Does emulation mean that I'll be able to play PS/PS2 games from the disc or digitally?

First good hardware news I've heard this milennium.

Yes please Sony. I would very much enjoy playing my PS2 games at 1080p on my PS4.

Can anyone tell me what memorable games are coming out this year for the PS4? I've yet to buy a next system and this article doesn't really interest me since I have a PS2 sitting in front of me.

i wish they had backwards compatible for the ps4 and xbox one  then i would be able to play all the good games from ps3 ps2 ps1 360 and xbox  on the 2 machines than having 5 consoles  that why im pissed but  scottpsfan14  wouldnt know there are good games on the other consoles would he because he doesnt know what he is talking about anyway . i love these people who think they have opinion  on the rest of us

scottpsfan14

LOL. It's not worth doing Xbox Backwards compatibility because there are hardly any games it had worth saving. And the 360 is impossible to do at this time anyway. Thats why the xbox fanboys are all pissed.

They should have announced this from the start, hopefully they'll come to their senses and add PS3 emulation as well when PS Now crashes and burns. Paying monthly for UI lag? No thanks.

So the ps4 can't play CD's but it'll read ps1 games?  Huh?

Let's be honest. The PS4 has always had the ability to play cds and PS/PS2 discs.

They didn't include the software  for cds because they wanted to sell their music service.

They also thought they could make people re-buy all their PS/PS2 games digitally.

The backlash has been so bad, and their music service is doing so badly, that they've decided to reverse themselves. Well  . . . better late than never.

I'm gonna try this with my KKND 2 Krossfire and see what happens!

Will I be able to put a PS1-PS2 disc into the console to run those games?

If so, PS4, here I come!

If not, well, no money for you Sony!

Great move as long as it doesn't cause problems like with the first ps3.

Even if ps4 doesn't have backwards compatibility with ps1-3 disks, sony should at least find a way for the ps4 to identify the disk and let you play the game through streaming... Just wishfull thinking

Sony, make it working with trophies, HD resolution AND reading the original discs and you'll be flooded by PS4's demands!

Why didn't they announce this BEFORE the release of PS4?

I am really tempted to go with a PS4, but the PS fanboys are so goddamn insufferable this generation. Sad people who genuinely seem to derive their self worth from which video game console "gang" they belong to. They cant seem to just shut up and be happy that their console is top dog right now. It genuinely makes me not want to buy one so as not to be one of THOSE guys.

@YuJoo  It's really not worth it unless it's exclusive like Final Fantasy. Heck GTA 5 just went on pre-order for PC recently. You should wait till there's more apps like this & better titles. Until than PC can play most these games.

@scottpsfan14  let me clear this up- no xbox fans are pissed. We've all got 360s to take care of backwards compatiability.  : P

All home and mobile Internet services in the U.S. that I'm aware of are capped (except Google's, not sure about that one) but most users don't use enough data to be aware of those caps. For them, the service is effectively unlimited.

Silviiwilvii
Silviiwilvii

@1gbit  Can't say I know about other states in the US but any city in Texas that I've lived in, I've never had a capped internet.

Currently using Sprint, I have unlimited data and no throttling for mobile.  For home internet, I use AT&T U-Verse (granted, not by choice but alas...) and have no cap or throttling.

@Ultramarinus  Good luck trying to emulate PS3. Even PS2 is still hard enough and need some serious horsepower from your computer. And what's people with this backwards compatibility any way, I buy new system for new games. If I want to play old games I play them on those old systems. Thank god they didn't add PS3 support into PS4 would have been 800 dollar system.

jerodmacdonald

@Ultramarinus You want them to "come to their senses" and do something impossible... Next time you're at the gas station why don't you fill up with diesel. It all makes cars go right?

horfenico
horfenico

@Ultramarinus It would be too difficult to emulate the PS3, the hardware architecture is significantly different, especially the processor. Which is why the PS4 didn't have backwards compatibility in the first place.

CaveManCobb

@Tremblay343  You don't put a ps1 disc into the system so its not reading anything. Its an emulator.

@Tremblay343 While I certainly hope they play our old PS and PS2 collections, I'd bet money they want us to pay for digital downloads from PSN.

- Of course.

- Of course.

- Indeed.

- I haven't really seen a backlash but I guess their sales number could indeed be better and that's why they're doing it.
But can I really put a PS1-2 disc in the PS4 and it will work? The article isn't clear on that aspect...

@Buffalo2867  Isn't the solution then to just not be a fanboy? It's not like when you get online for the first time you'll be surrounded by idiots. There is a pretty large fanbase.

I hear yea, man we all know the ps4 more powerful but that doesn't make the one a bad console. I have a ps4 dont have a one yet but im getting one soon as I sell a 7970ghz I have laying around. Gonna play titan fall wth my gaming rig 2 780's might be an overkill for it but damn I hope dead rising comes to pc someday. I love my ps4 but damn there are more ps4 trolls on every article that has to do with the new consoles than anything else, do you guys have to bash other consoles to make you fill better about the ps4 your mom got you for Christmas, play games and have fun thats what there for.

alien33

@Buffalo2867  Really? That is the reason you don't buy a PS4? Hahaha! Thanks for the laugh. So, for example you don't listen to rap because many rappers are gangsters or you don't listen to heavy metal because some of the musicians are satan worshippers or dress weird... And you are not soccer fan because some fans are hooligans. What else have you decided to stop doing because of some other people? Just say you don't want to support Sony or the Playstation brand instead of finding ridiculous reasons...

Tacanacy
Tacanacy

@Buffalo2867  This is just the most pathetic and ridiculous excuse I've read/heard. Do you let people run the rest of your life aswell? What you watch and what you listen to? It makes me wonder if you are of the same age group as "fanboys", as they are immature, arrogant and opinionated, because you're bothered by their opinions and don't see past them, and that would indicate that you feel you're on same equal level as them. An objective adult would completely ignore it and easily feel above this fanism.

@pilot_riaz @Blitzkrieg_exe  The cloud servers are only for the PS3 games to be played on the PS4. They have yet to specify how they will apply the PS1/PS2 emulation but the games will be on your local machine for the PS1/PS2 games. We will likely have to buy and download them but the dream would be to let us run the disks if we still have them.

masterfortesque
masterfortesque

@DVONvX @scottpsfan14 I guess that :P means it's a joke right? Because the compability list is short and half of the compatible games have serious emulation glitches. No wonder they just scrapped it for One.

I loved Xbox but it's getting really easy to jump ship back to Sony.

@hardcore69er @1gbit  Ya noone has caps these days man lol. I could even use my cell phone as my wifi and that isn't capped either

Ultramarinus

@snaketus @Ultramarinus PS2 emulation has been a breeze for several years now. A gaming PC bought in 2010s is enough to play them with maximized settings that dwarfs visual fidelity you can get in a PS3. If I can get a crisper picture with Steam In-Home streaming than my PS3 hardware emulating, that's telling something.

Yeah well, you can only keep so much gigantic boxes under your TV and I don't see why I have to when one box is technologically capable of playing them all. The only reason Sony is giving (MS is worse but nvm that) that they want me to pay monthly subs.

Because PS1&2 support for PS3 made it cost 1000$, right? That's some serious math there..

Ultramarinus
Ultramarinus

@jerodmacdonald @Ultramarinus Impossible? Says who? This architecture argument has been mentioned for decades and guess what happens? It gets emulated on PC eventually. The only reason Sony and MS suddenly decided to give zero backwards compatibility this time is because they want to milk the gamers even more with more monthly subs. They aren't content with just hardware sales and commissions per sold titles anymore. Not getting deceived here.

xantufrog

@CaveManCobb @Tremblay343well... an emulator still needs software to emulate. This can be done via the disc, or via a digital download. I'm almost certain they are going to unlock disc playability for us on these old games. They just aren't going to loose enough revenue by doing so relative to the amount of goodwill they gain.

@Tremblay343- sure, all BD drives read CDs. The PS4 just doesn't have software right now to PLAY the cds (rip off, if you ask me). The hardware functionality is there, it's just not accessible right now due to missing software support for it.

maitkarro

@MegaPhilX2 @Born_Lucky If the PS4 has the free singstar game like PS3, then you can use the PS2 singstar games to import songs from there.

Born_Lucky
Born_Lucky

@MegaPhilX2 @Born_Lucky It has a laser that reads blu ray and dvd. That means it can read cds too.

Unless you think blu ray players don't read cds. In that case you need to get out more.

Ultramarinus

@snaketus My 2,5 year old PC can emulate PS2 in 1080, with all the bells and whistles that isn't even present on PS3. A PC that's as powerful as a PS4 could pull off PS3 emulation if Sony either told how or did it themselves. In 30 years, your Google glasses could emulate PS3. One game for each eye simultaneously.

The only reason emulators are so much time to do properly is because Sony does everything in their power to prevent it both technologically and legally.

Ultramarinus
Ultramarinus

@xantufrog @Ultramarinus The emulators on PC are being done without any help from the original creators and is pretty much as good as a ragtag group of insurgents reverse engineering a shot down war fighter. This is Sony who knows all the intricacies of their machine and moreover, many software and hardware engineers working on it for a living, with the budget and means to do it. They sure could pull off some kind of emulation that at the very least gives 720p, the original resolution.

snaketus
snaketus

@xantufrog @Ultramarinus  I don't think even any normal home PC at the moment could do it at decent speed. And let's see emulating PS1 pretty much perfectly took only like three to four years achieve back then, even less. Even up to date there aren't perfect PS2 emulator and it's been 14 years since PS2 laucnh so maybe in 20-30 years we see good enough PS3 emulator.

xantufrog
xantufrog

@Ultramarinus You're right, TECHNICALLY an x86 machine can emulate a PS3. But it is an impossibility for the PS4, because it isn't powerful enough. Especially because the architecture is so different between the PS3 and PS4, the PS4 would need more raw horsepower to run PS3 games without noticeable lag through software emulation. Could a beast machine PC do it? Yeah, but the PS4 is not there IMHO.
