The PlayStation 4 will be released in Japan on February 22, 2014. Sony Computer Entertainment Japan Asia announced the news during its pre-Tokyo Game Show conference today.

The next-generation console is scheduled to launch in North America on November 15 and in the European region on November 29, nearly three months earlier than the Japanese release date.

In addition to the launch date news, Sony revealed the PlayStation 4 First Limited Pack. The pack includes a PlayStation 4 console and a digital code for Knack. The pack will carry a recommended retail price of 41,979 yen. A PlayStation 4 First Limited Pack including the PlayStation Camera will be available with an RRP of 46,179 yen.

Gamers will be able to preorder the console in Japan from October 5.

The PlayStation 4 will be released in 32 countries by the end of the year.

Why would a Japan company do this? This is coming across like spying and would end up like that South park episode about Chin-pokemon!

Remember when Japan was at the top of the food chain with video games?  What happened?

A console from a Japanese company being released in US before Japan?

That's a first.

sony just don't care. not like they have to worry about losing in japan

Looks like Sony is using their production line to focus only on the West, because you know, they have no competition to worry about inside Japan.

It really looks like PS4 is the one being rushed to market to compete with XB1 now. Sony overplayed their hand, like usual.

MUST..DEFEND....COMPANY...THAT I DONT WORK FOR!!!!!!!!

Long as my sexbox and PS4 are ready for pick up at 12:01 at Gamestop, I'm good.

This is really surprising. Is this an early sign that Sony will be focusing more on the western market than it's home market?

LOL

lets see, if it was MS then this would have been considered as "yet another move to rip off gamers and destroy the game industry by a heartless corporation who failed to make a game console in time..."

but since it is Sony, then this is "a well planned strategic move that will benefit gamers all over the world by a philanthropic company who has no other reason to make this but pure heart..."

PS fanboys comments are pathetic.

go on, hug each other, you all sound like you need a hug ;D

This seems incredibly strange. If anything, I would think they would release to Japan first, with the US in the November 29th slot and the EU at the end....

This is a slap in the face to the Japanese market... Waiting to launch so they can get a strong lineup of western and Japanese games may sound nice when said but again the devil is in the details.. Western titles don't really sell all that well in Japan to begin with so this is a load of BS.. This is basically Sony redirecting inventory of the PS4 hardware to put more into the western Markets hands because those are the markets the Xbox is strong in. Yeah and MS is the evil company. If I was a Japanese gamer I would tell Sony to shove it. Sony has all the diehard fanboys on board so they will get away with pulling crap like this on consumers....   This wasnt as easy to do with the PS3 because the $600 price tag was shocking enough and then all the dumb shit they were doing no one had confidence in the POS PS3

Sony may be trying to cripple Microsoft's opening with Xbox One. 32 Countries for PS4 VS 13 countries for Microsoft. Since PS4 and Xbox one are almost identical in processing power wielding AMD processors and almost the same specs. The 8th generation console war will be won quickly. Sony knows without a doubt that Xbox One is going to flop in Japan. Xbox & Xbox 360 didn't make a dent in Japan and Asia region. So Sony doesn't have to worry about competing against Microsoft in Japan/Asia. So focusing on North America, Europe and Oceania for the first 3 months. Sony should cripple Microsoft out of the gate.

-Sony now has many more consoles to sell in NA and Europe

-PS3 is doing well in japan with more games coming out this year

-Later release means that more games will be out or closer to being ready

- More games are coming out to Vita and a price drop and redesign PSV

- focus on PSV and PS4

-Xbox is not doing well in Japan ,and Xbox One will not go on sell before PS4

In the end I think its a good move for Sony as they can sell more consoles this way during the first few months.

Just so you clueless people stop with the silly speculation, Sony openly stated during their conference that the PS4 is getting a late release in Japan due to the lack of a decent launch line-up. Just watch the conference.

Its a smart move. The Japanese will buy into the PS4 anyway, even if they get it a few months later. They don't particularly care about the Xbox over there (rightfully so). Its not like people will buy the xbox insetad. They won't.

Remember, they don't celebrate Christmas in Japan. So, getting out for December means nothing.

This is a lazy article. I read one on another site that actually gave an explanation and it was a pretty good one. But I still gotta scratch my head over this one. MS would never release their console outside the US before releasing it here.

Is Japan like it used to be regarding games consoles or they more for MMO's on there Pc nowadays , I know they like there handhelds but I don't know where there at with there console gaming ?

@91210user Why wouldn't they do this? America is where the battle ground is at, that's why they should focus all their units there.

@ohjtbehaaave I was just thinking that... WTF? Why is Japan getting it after NA?

@sam628 hmm, why did you put those words in brackets for? It really interesting, it makes me want to get an Xbox One aswell.

@DiscGuru101 The fact that they didn't have a PS4 hardware at Gamescom make me wonder how complete the actual hardware really is. They should have enough units to launch in every region.

@mav_destroyer No, I'm pretty sure it's simply because they don't have any competition in Japan, as the Xbox never sold much there.

@mav_destroyer More focusing on the largest markets possible, to not only get early adoption but of course sales.

@NoAngle

We'll be busy playing games from various genres that aren't generic multiplayer shooters just so we have an excuse to socialize anytime we game...so who is really the needy bunch requiring constant hugs and attention factually?

Scared to play original single player focused, thought-provoking games that leave you to your own devices? Don't worry, those "weird sensations" are called emotions and reflecting on self and I'm not talking about the mirror your dudebro friends use to constantly comment on themselves either.

Check yourself cuz you really have No Angle here.

@Chizaqui The market emphasis has been shifting in favour of the west for years now. I'm guessing that supply is falling short of demand so they're going to put the systems they do have where the most people will buy them. Just good business sense really.

kcarpen

@Derrick79 they are putting more into the western market because thats where the money is, not because they are scared of microsoft haha

jenovaschilld

@Megavideogamer Agree with you to a point, but Sony is focusing on the largest markets possible in hopes of early adoption and sales. If you check gamesindustryinternational you will see they had an article in regards to how many machines they can have on the store shelves. As it takes different power, literature, sku's, packaging for western-asian markets - I sure it is a business necessity at this point.

Oh as for xbox flopping in Asian markets - do not be so sure. While xbox console sales were the lowest of the three for 7th gen - the tie in ratio - {console to game} was the highest 13:1. And that was nothing to sneeze at, MS was probably pretty pleased with the advancement they gained in a land where monster hunter, dating sims, and portable games control the market. It would seem that western RPG's and first person shooters have a demand and following throughout Asian countries who can afford.

Now the greatest ground sony made 7th gen after falling behind everywhere else was through Europe with a tie in ratio > 1:10. Blu ray, name brand, certain games- probably a little of all three. Europe and the Euro is the new huge market. USA/Canada are still the 800lb gorilla in the room with known sales - it is Europe with the most potential new customers this gen, and then china/india/south america probably next. Anyway, Sony has to focus on europe more then Japan- it is too rich of a potential market not to.

@Megavideogamer Oh man... again with the 'console wars is over before it started/will be won fast' nonsense.

People say that every single time. It never happened even once. The PS3 is by far the most flopped console in correlation with what it tried to accomplish, not taking in DreamCast and Saturn. Yet, it sold almost as much as 360.

Don't try to predict stuff you know nothing about. The only question that there is is: who will be the favorite? And it will once again be a small margin.

Zevvion
Zevvion

@Bellum_Sacrum Yeah, because what the businessmen say obviously isn't a lie. You know, how Xbox One launches late in my country because of language and Kinect issues? You know... a country where we have been using English on any console for over 20 years now.

kcarpen

@tightwad34  thats cause very few people care about the xbox outside the west. The playstation has a huge following all over the world . not trying to make this a poo on microsoft post its just that in the rest of the world the playstation doesnt have as large of a competition with xbox as they do here.

tightwad34
tightwad34

@Bedsidelee PS3 is huge in Japan, as you could probably imagine. 360 is the opposite over there.

@mnickel3

Sony has 2 departmants. The entertainment department which has the video games and movies which is doing VERY WELL. And then you have the electronics department which is sinking. So yes your statment that Sony is in dire straights is half true i guess....

mnickel3

@DiscGuru101 @dariusq @Chizaqui They're trying to avoid additional losses due to the weakening yen. So in an attempt to break the historical pattern of launching a console at a loss, avoiding the floundering exchange trend is good business. And given that sony is in somewhat dire straights, they need good business.

tightwad34
tightwad34

@ConorS79 MS would be best off to not even bother with the X1 over there from a financial standpoint. As for trying to build relationships it may be good to do it. Overall I say they should at least wait and see if they could possibly get some games developed for it that would appeal over there. I still would doubt it would sell very much.
