PlayStation 4 to allow recording of game content over HDMI

Sony says that users will be able to record their own PlayStation 4 game footage over HDMI.

by

The PlayStation 4 will allow users to record game content over HDMI, Sony has said.

The PlayStation 3 used HDCP copy protection over an HDMI connection, forcing users looking to record in-game content to use analogue cables such as component.

Sony announced that its next-generation console will allow game capture over HDMI during a keynote speech at the Tokyo Game Show 2013 overnight.

The company's head of third-party relations, Brad Douglas, added on Twitter that more "details will follow soon."

The PlayStation 4's OS software will also allow users to record and stream clips of their games without the need for additional hardware.

The PlayStation 4 will launch on November 15 in North America for $399, and on November 29 in Europe for €399/£349.

Cool story bro. You can't even party chat on PS3.

I love Xbox as much as well... most, but that was blatant fanboyism.

Like 11 people will do this in the lifetime of their console. 9 of them will post of youtube showing game tricks 98% of us can't do. Quickscoping, spinning back flip triple kills mostly while telling awful jokes and cursing needlessly. Other than that... looking forward to my PS4 & XB1.

Something that Sony announced first you mean? just remember back to February when the PS4 was announced... the share button and uploading videos was mentioned in that conference, we didn't hear anything of the Xbox One until May. I'm no fanboy before you start hating, just posting facts,

So they are going to turn off HDCP while games are running, either all games or maybe let each game decide.  I always wondered why the PS3 didn't have this ability.  Was it some complex technical reason?  Or maybe it was that they worried if it had that ability people might figure out how to trick the system into turning it off during something like bluray playback?

The funny thing about HDCP is that in the overall picture it doesn't really matter.  Sure it's probably involved in legal agreements with the people that provide content, but in actual practice it does little to cut down on piracy/copying.  The vast vast freaking vast majority of people that are pirating movies and such are doing so by simply downloading them, they don't even own anything that can capture via HDMI.  On the other end of the pirating, the people ripping the content, well HDCP did essentially nothing to stop that as well.

This is great news and will obviate HDCP stripper boxes for many cases.

Besides games, I wonder what PS4 features and services will use HDCP?

Sony is just doing everything right with this system so far. They are quickly turning me into a fanboy. I've been gaming mostly on the 360 to this point although we do have a PS3 for their exclusives and free online play. But I have no plans for the XB1 at this time and Sony just keeps making me feel more and more like I've made the best decision for my next console purchase. Love what they've been doing for gamers with this one.

I would say finally but it's not like this is an update for the ps3 so I'll just say, good move. That's how it should've been with the ps3. It's already been said in the comments about how hard they went to get component banned; that was just a waste of time. Making it easier for people to record games is only a plus to me though I still have no plans to buy a ps4.

PS3 does not win. PS4 wins, fact by fact.

This isn't available at launch on PS4 though, while it's standard on the Xbox One right from launch.

UStream + Twitch + Record last 15 Mins + No pay to use the feature. PS4 =)

No, Slender. PS4 does not win. You're ignoring the rest of the facts. Iwon't even bother talking to you.

Again, the PS4 wins in this feature. UStream + Twitch + Record last 15 Mins + No pay to use the feature.

Both consoles can stream to Twitch and I'm pretty sure both can record video. Nobody needs to use either of those to defend the console they'll be buying next gen because both have them.

Hey look! A console article that isn't written by Eddie contains no controversial statement of an irrelevant comparison! If Eddie had written this, the last paragraph would have been:

The PlayStation 4 will launch on November 15 in North America for $399, while the Xbox One will sell for $499.

Sergio, are you blind, or just reading what you want to? I said I like both Xbox AND Playstation. Yes, I prefer Xbox, but that's not stopping me from criticizing it. I also said that having Twitch built in makes it EASIER for people who either don't want to or can't waste the money on an external capture device. And no, downloading your video won't make it bad, if you do it the right way.

if you stream, download edit and then re-upload, the video will look like crap !! man, if you are not a trolling xbox fan boy why are you trying so hard to convince people that this news is not a big deal? .. this news for youtubers are very excellent news. if you like xbox and don't like PS4, fine .. just don't spread ignorance and lies just because you have preference ..

This will be especially good news to game journalists and video game websites. Some of the game journalists have already expressed worry that screen capturing for video and pic reviews would have been delayed while awaiting written requests from pc to console capturing. I myself could care less about those that put up hundred of videos of them getting a sniper kill on COD - but I do enjoy getting game reviews that day.

This was one of the only things I could see Microsoft having a major leverage over Sony with, which could make a lot of people decide to go with the Xbox One, now there is no reason other than the games to not choose a PS4. I'm not even the slightest bit interested in the Xbox One exclusives, Microsoft start the cycle strong, and end horribly.

That was quick to sort out! Sony are really pulling out all the stops for PS4 eh? They are definitely trying to make this an out of the park homerun. Good luck guys, I'll grab one after the initial 2 batches are cleared out. I don't want one of those teething problem systems and the games are want won't land till next year anyway.

Nice addition. I'm still hoping they will include somewhat robust editing tools on the native OS. At the very least, the ability to crop and stitch gameplay segments, and add external video and audio sources.
