PlayStation 4 sales reach 4.2 million, outselling Xbox One by 1.2 million units in 2013

Worldwide sell-through reaches 4.2 million, well ahead of Xbox One's 3 million units.

The PlayStation 4 has now sold more than 4.2 million units worldwide as of December 28, 2013. Sony announced the news today at the 2014 Consumer Electronics Show. That mark represents units sold-through to consumers and is well above the 3 million Xbox One units Microsoft sold to consumers by the end of 2013.

There are now more than 7 million combined next-generation systems on the market.

Sony sold more than 1 million PS4 units during the system's first 24 hours and 2.1 million total consoles just two weeks later. SCEA CEO Jack Tretton said previously that selling 3 million consoles by the end of the calendar year would be no problem.

PS4 software sales have now risen to 9.7 million, Sony said, which is a combined figure of physical products and downloadable sales through the PlayStation Store. Some of the top-selling games were Call of Duty: Ghosts, Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, and Battlefield 4.

Sony also said that global PlayStation Plus subscriptions have risen by more than 90 percent since the PS4 launch and that players have broadcast more than 1.7 million streams from the PS4 to platforms like Twitch and Ustream.

The Japanese technology giant expects to sell 5 million PS4 units by the end of its fiscal year in March 2014, a figure that now seems well within range. Microsoft has not disclosed sales projections for the Xbox One.

Also today during Sony's CES 2014 presentation, PlayStation president Andrew House revealed that the company's Gaikai-powered streaming technology will be called PlayStation Now. It will enter beta this month, before a worldwide public rollout this summer.

Separately, video streaming service Twitch announced today that between December 23, 2013 and January 3, 2014, an impressive 20 percent of Twitch broadcasters were PS4 owners.

"Ever since we began working with the major console platform companies, we were confident the integration of live broadcasting to Twitch would be a game changer," Twitch marketing VP Matthew DiPietro said. "Based on our success with PlayStation 4, which currently represents twenty percent of our broadcaster base, our vision was on the mark. We envision a day when broadcasting your gameplay is a ubiquitous piece of the gaming experience. We're well on our way."

Sell-through to retailers doesn't mean anything.  We all know XBones are collecting dust on shelves while PS4s are still getting snatched up about as fast as Sony can make them.

Blue-Sky

This was expected considering Xbox won't sell in one of the gaming industry's largest market: Japan. So what if PS4 is in 48 countries and Xbone is in 13. It's peanuts compared to NA, UK and JPN markets.

So now GameSpot are getting into the habit of publishing essentially the same article twice under two different titles? This article had the same basic information as the software sales article.

Whichever system people are buying if they are enjoying the games than that is all that really matters.  I am actually amazed that Sony managed to sell so many games with only 2 exclusives.  Sort of speaks to the errors the Xbox team made during the initial announcement, well or more-so how stupid people don't comprehend new ideas well.   Either or good for Sony and me, since I have both - booyah!!!

Thumbs up to owning both systems! Same here. So glad I'm not a loser/fanboy (cry baby that only owns a ps4).

Good news all around. The more consoles on the market, the more support they will get. We may get more games this gen then last.

@pygmyschizoid You know how Eddie writes. I'm surprised he didn't compare Wii U's sales so ps4 and xbone but that's probably a future article. lol

Just got sold out in Portugal. It's nice to see that despite the economic crisis, people still manage to sort out their priorities and spend more on the essentials.

OMG! PS4 SOLD 1 MILLION MORE UNITS THAN XBOX ONE! WHAT ARE WE GONNA DO?! I THOUGHT THESE CONSOLES WERE SUPPOSED TO SELL THE SAME AMOUNT!!! Get the fuck outta here. Is this really news? Tell me these fuckin journalist aren't really reporting that one console sold 1 million more than another? This is ridiculous. The funny part is according to these same journalist, the lead was supposed to be much greater than this before the consoles launched. These guys are fuckin wastes

@Jdzspace Explain to me how do you know it's SLOWING DOWN? Enlighten me. Let me also add...have you seen any news in 4 weeks about new games or just end of year awards news? I can afford any one of these consoles, but I havent purchased them because THERE'S NO GAMES!!!

john1217727
john1217727

@2Black2Strong Easy to explain - Sales of both consoles, Xbox more so, are slowing down based on numbers we got in the first week of Dec when the Xbox had sold 2 million and the PS4 and sold 2.1 after being on the market for about the same time  (PS4 launched first in the US, Xbox One launched first in Europe.) A month later Xbox One has sold 1 million more consoles vs the PS4's 2.1 million consoles, so it's obvious that sales have slowed especially for the Xbox.

john1217727
john1217727

@2Black2StrongDude, why are you so angry?  The journalist is just reporting on Sony's press release just as the MS press release was reported on the day before.  This is a gaming site - that's part of his job. Are you angry because the facts are screwing with view of reality?

blackace
blackace

@Jdzspace@2Black2Strong It's 28.5% more. Not sure were this 40% is coming from. The % of 1.2 million to 4.2 million is 28.5 % and not 40%.

Jdzspace
Jdzspace

@2Black2Strong - I think the story is that Sony has sold 40% more up to this point (keep in mind they have only been out less than 60 days). so working in raw numbers isn't supposed to look as impressive.

the story is that Sony has sold 40% more and sales for Microsoft are slowing down, which is why the Wii U outsold Microsoft the week before christmas.

as to where demand for PS4 continues to grow and outpace supply.

the story is that both systems are barely out of the starting gates, and one is already slowing down while the other is keeping pace.

get it now?

Vylsith
Vylsith

@blackace@Jdzspace@2Black2Strong 40% of 3 million is 1.2 million.  The Xbox One sold 28.5% less consoles than the PS4, but the PS4 sold 40% more consoles than the Xbox One.  Welcome to basic math.

Shewgenja
Shewgenja

@2Black2Strong They can't sell what they haven't produced yet.  In the PS4s case, it is still fulfilling preorders in a few countries, in fact.

if sony can stream all past games, or atleast most of them, it'll officially ahve the most games on a console... ever...

GregoryBastards
GregoryBastards

Yeah all it needs is 50 gb installations which take an hour and fan sounds as loud as a vaccum leaner from the 90s also stupid graphic optimisation then itll be a pc.

meatz666
meatz666

@GregoryBastards

Yeah all it needs is 50 gb installations which take an hour: Almost every console game requires instalation so the games loads faster. Never played MGS4? And the current HDs for PCs are faster than the laptop HD that next-gen uses

and fan sounds as loud as a vaccum leaner from the 90s: My desktop is very silent, since I bought the rig last year. I'm sorry if your $150 lenovo laptop is so loud. It's not my fault.

also stupid graphic optimisation: So the graphics of a console are better than a PC. You're delusional.

Now finish your cocoa and go to bed, it's past your time.

GregoryBastards
GregoryBastards

Last year old pc eh..??, talk to me in one year when you're already running games at 'very low' and frantically searching for that .ini file to disable fog or some such shit....also try running beyond two souls or uncharted 4 on that million dollar nuclear capable 'rig' of yours, see if you can manage that....what you dont understand is every console gamer is a pc gamer by default as everyone has a pc for 'shite games' and other stuff....Talk about delusional.....

Now go masturbate to a game running at 1080p because thats what this pc master race actually stands for...

Jdzspace
Jdzspace

I remember on launch day that there were reports that there were 3.3 million pre-orders and what not that had yet to be fulfilled. and we all laughed and figured that it was just people who were on the waiting list and that demand for the actual system wouldn't be that high..........

apparently, we were wrong. very wrong

john1217727
john1217727

@Jdzspace Agree - fulfilling those  pre-orders for the PS4 is probably why it is so hard to find.  Throw Japan into the mix next month and I believe they will be hard to find for at least the next couple of months

willjohnboy
willjohnboy

It's Great to see the next gen consoles selling but i have to say well done to Sony the PS4 has done remarkably well considering the stock shortages although it would still be 4.2M if they only released in the same countries (demand is high in the US and UK and some have not yet received their pre orders) as the Xbox one you can only sell what you can manufacture the amount of countries it's released in, perhaps if Microsoft released the Xbox one in more countries may be the Xbox one would have the same problems, Sony had and would have over 4M but that still would not stop the trolls oh well happy Gaming everyone.

john1217727
john1217727

Great sales numbers for both consoles, especially the PS4.  What it means is that the next-gen install base will reach the point soon where game developers will be able to use more resources to produce exclusive content for next-gen and stop having to make multplat cross generational games to ensure they make a profit from the last gen. I just hope that the Xbox One can hold up its side of the bargain as sales for it seem to have slowed in the past couple of weeks (at least here in the USA where supply seems to have out stripped demand.) MS needs to get its shit together and use some of the extra supply they have sitting on the shelves and on-line to launch in some more countries. Some people are wondering how Sony is managing to sell so many PS4s when they are so hard to find. Well, imo,  launching in more countries is one part of the equation, supply is another (4.2 million is a lot of supply,) and finally some of those numbers are coming from the backlog of pre-orders still being filled

GregoryBastards
GregoryBastards

Dude do you really think that these sales figures are based upon different dynamics...theyve calculated figures on the same countries....reporters everywhere wouldnt have to be that stupid to do this....

sigh, you really don't understand do you? Hey man don't you realize in order for us to make this thing work we got to get rid of all the pimps, the pushers and the prostitutes and then start all over again clean!

Will buy a third for the office, and another as a gift for my good friend's birthday this January. My seething hatred for SONY continues..

@dysonlu

Please tell me what M$ did that's different from any corporation. Enlighten me? Last I checked SONY supports the mining of Coltan, which is strip mining for its chips in Africa, which kills, displaces local inhabitants. Doesn't get any worst than that, the blood on your hands... murderer...sony fans..murderers...

Side note to all you morons. I am kidding, though I did purchase two, and plan on purchasing another for my office, just as an excuse to use Skype for business and game... and as a gift for a friend.. patriotic duty has nothing to do with it. The nerve of you assholes trying to tell ANYONE, how to spend their money.

@Janpieterzun

Please tell me who said anything about difference between MS and other companies?  Even if there is no difference, it doesn't change the fact that "patriotic duty" is sign of ignorance.

These are multinational corporations.  Sony employs, directly or indirectly, as many or more people outside of Japan than it does in Japan.  Similar thing with MS.   And they don't pay their fair share of taxes in the US either.

Anyway, when you lose your cool and start calling people names, it's a sign you already lost the argument.

allever

@Janpieterzun You're an idiot.  Microsoft is not looking out for you.   Every action they take is how to nickel and dime you for your money.

E.g. While PS3 and PS4 owners have enjoyed rechargeable controllers for the last 7+ years, Microsoft makes you pay for the batteries for theirs. You would think by now they would give you this ability for free, but noooo they rather sell their own for what? $25? They add proprietary audio instead of universal just to charge for licensing.. etc..

Microsoft has lost touch of reality.  They only see you as a $ sign, not a user.
