PlayStation 4 "noticeably faster" than Xbox One - Report

Anonymous development sources say PlayStation 4 is up to 50 percent faster than the Xbox One in certain key areas.

by

Anonymous developer sources have indicated that the PlayStation 4 is "noticeably faster" than the Xbox One in key performance areas, according to UK magazine Edge.

Memory reads on PlayStation 4 are 40-50 percent faster than Xbox One, says the report, and the arithmetic logic unit (ALU) on Sony's graphic card is also said to be twice as fast than its next-gen competition.

A basic example given by one developer is that a current multiplatform title can run at a resolution of 1920x1080 at 30fps on PlayStation 4, but that on Xbox One the framerate will drop to 20-something at the lower resolution of 1600x900.

“Xbox One is weaker and it's a pain to use its ESRAM,” added another developer.

Microsoft's efforts to bump up the specifications of the Xbox One--such as beefing up the processor to 1.75GHz from 1.6GHz--are said to have been done in an effort to close the gap between the two next-gen consoles. Both Microsoft and Sony are said to be working on improving their graphics drivers, too, and will continue doing so right up until launch and beyond.

Xbox One is said to be faster in other areas, however. “Let’s say you are using procedural generation or raytracing via parametric surfaces--that is, using a lot of memory writes and not much texturing or ALU--Xbox One will be likely be faster,” concluded one developer.

The Edge report concludes that there will be little performance difference between PlayStation 4 and Xbox One launch titles, as developers struggle to hit tight deadlines, and adds that ensuring parity between console version could become a political matter, with publishers not wanting to upset either platform holder by releasing inferior versions.

One developer added that it rarely makes financial sense to optimise a multiplatform game for one particular platform. “It would be totally fine for us to make one version prettier without any political difficulties but it usually doesn't make financial sense,” said the developer, “unless it’s a very simple tweak.”

Microsoft will launch the Xbox One on November 22, with Sony opting to release the PlayStation 4 in North America on November 15 and on November 29 in Europe.

Lmfao. This was just announced. PS 4 only has 6 cores not 8 and only 4.5gbs of ram. Source is from http://ps4daily.com/2013/07/playstation-4-os-uses-3-5-gb-of-ram/ and in live demo it froze because it's not as powerful as they thought http://n4g.com/news/1359366/ps4-fails-to-respond-during-a-live-broadcast-on-japanese-tv-awkwardness-and-hilarity-ensue . Lmfao another update. Clearly states PS4 has same or less power the the X1. I'm loving this http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-ps3-system-software-memory

are you saying gddr5 is cheap? are you saying the apu thats the SAME MODEL but with many more shader units in it  is going to be the same price errrr i dont know what to say if you cant figure this out

As somebody whom is neutral in the next gen console war, gamespot sure has been seeming pro ps4 lately. at least when they aren't being taken over by gtaV

Battlefield 4 running at 60fps and 64 player multiplayer announced today for Xbox One only. Very nice. Very happy I got my preorder in for the X1

So basically, devs and games journos state that PS4 is noticeably more powerful than xb1 while only Microsoft and its fanboys state otherwise...

Who should I trust...!?

I am struggling with this decision between the two...keep going back and forth. If I didn't care about damn achievements so much I would probably go with PS4....but honestly hate PSN

While it sounds like a lot, in practice it's not such a huge gap.  Digital Foundry did a test bench comparison based on the target specs of  the XBone and PS4 and the FPS differences weren't exactly huge, though the PS4 won each test pretty easily.  The difference was usually no more then 10 fps and both test benches struggled to run the likes of Sleeping Dogs, Hitman Absolution, and Metro Last Light at 1080p.

If theres any real difference to be had it will be in the exclusives where developers truly focus on developing a game for a specific platform.

lol as usual all the butthurt xbots are denying everything, lol, too scared to admit that ps4 is better. they all make silly excuses, like "its anonymous so its false" LOOOOL it was on a fucking  edge magazine for god sake!

Ok, EVEN if the PS4 is less efficient with the 50% more CUs, and EVEN IF the Xbox One CUs are 6% faster, do you really think the inefficency is so bad that the Xbox One becomes faster?

In my experience its on the developer not being very good if he can't use simple esram. As one developer said in an article I saw today "I'd be anonymous too if I had to admit its a pain to use Esram because those in the industry would know I'm not good at what I do".

“Xbox One is weaker and it's a pain to use its ESRAM,” added another developer.  - this says it all really. These anonymous devs are noobs who simply don't know how to unleash the power of the Xbox One

"Anonymous developer sources" ... I stopped reading right there. The real-world performance of both consoles will be the same, even if the PS4 is theoretically  better than the Xbox One, I don't think it would be anywhere near to 50%.

To all the xbox haters, I don't care one way or the other, I will have both systems, but prefer the xbox...here ya go...

• 18 CU's vs. 12 CU's =/= 50% more performance. Multi-core processors have inherent inefficiency with more CU's, so it's simply incorrect to say 50% more GPU.
• Adding to that, each of our CU's is running 6% faster. It's not simply a 6% clock speed increase overall.
• We have more memory bandwidth. 176gb/sec is peak on paper for GDDR5. Our peak on paper is 272gb/sec. (68gb/sec DDR3 + 204gb/sec on ESRAM). ESRAM can do read/write cycles simultaneously so I see this number mis-quoted.
• We have at least 10% more CPU. Not only a faster processor, but a better audio chip also offloading CPU cycles.

So many silly x bots on here trying to be all defensive as usual like blazen702, maybe go to a article that isn't about ps4 being more powerful if your trying to justify the xbox one's power. I think the devs know what they're talking about. so just, DEAL WITH IT.....BAM.......

Again the weaker console will be holding back all next gen games. I hope they make it for PS4 first. Then port it down to Xbox and just cut out what it cant handle.

Arachnofunk

I think this is just a strategy against the Xbox ONE, both consoles have practically the same power.

wouldnt it be great if nintendo went back to the 64 days and started competing against high end systems again

This is what happens when you have a GDDR5 vs GDDR3.

I really hope there are more Playstation exclusives in this generation. I don't want to spend another better part of a decade just settling because developers need to optimise for both consoles. I want developers to make games that push the PS4 to the max.

Name names or this article doesn't count or matter - all you are doing is getting fanboys from both sides all worked up. -  Sounds like what little kids on the play ground argue about.  Great reporting. NOT!

Keep telling yourself that scrub. PS4 will use 5.5 GB of ram for games NOT 4.5 GB of ram.

PS4 has already won next gen. ; )

@Blazen702  do not seem ps 4 faster in this case haha lairs been lairs there  since the ps3  saying they are stronger and better than xbox with shades and yellow ducks stuff like that xbox been mopping them on the floor haha

@suren1998 It doesn't matter if I like XBOX or PSN because it is what I like. The sooner everyone starts understanding that the world has many different people the better. I'm going to wait for both systems to come out and play each one. That way I can make an informed decision before I lay down my hard earned cash.

@jefferson1964 Yet the 360 has no game that can keep up with heavy rain or the last of us.

You can make up or fluff specs all you want but they don't mean anything in real world use.

@Arachnofunk LOL! What strategy? They already have less preorders then Ps4. There is no  no strategy I see forming.

@Arachnofunk  a stragety is to be less powerful ? Not seeing your logic there. Thats just plain bad business plus to add insult to injury that its more expensive...

@frostbite2user It's nice to have a kiddy/family gaming system, but I have to agree that Nintendo should step up.  maybe then we'll start seeing classic games we grew up with like Zelda etc.. take on a more serious role.  after all, we are the ones that "Grew Up" with it.

Just to point out... No specs are final till closer to launch, it's a bit early to be making comparisons or acting like any specs are final. I mean look at all the changes done to the XB One since it's reveal.

360 killed the PS3 and most games look better on 360. In the US all cross platforms sold more on the 360. In the US the Xbox console outsold the ps3 for years now. Nice try.

@sirchick Saying that PS4 is faster than the Xbox ONE could be a strategy against Xbox ONE. Read the article again.

sirchick

@Arachnofunk @sirchick stragety for microsoft ? I'm still not following your logic here... people review the consoles claim PS4 is faster so it seems Sony's stragety to make a cheap powerful box did better than microsoft's attempts.
