PlayStation 4 EU digital prices are not final, says Sony

EA games currently cost £60 through PlayStation Store, but Sony says the prices are due to change before the console launches on Friday.

by

PlayStation 4 game prices on the European PlayStation Store will be adjusted before the console's launch on Friday, Sony has said.

EA games cost £63 earlier this week, for instance, and were later reduced to £60, which is £5 more expensive than on Xbox One. But now Sony has said that the current pricing on the PlayStation Store is not final.

"Although PS4 launches in Europe on the 29th November, we have switched on the European PSN early to test and make sure that features and functionality are fully operational for launch," said Sony to Eurogamer.

"However, as PS4 and PSN have not yet officially launched in this region, nothing on the PSN is final, including pricing on the store. You will continue to see some prices adjusted over the next few days in preparation for launch on Friday."

Anyone that has already spent money on PS4 launch titles through the PlayStation Store will receive the eventual difference refunded, Sony adds.

Digital should be selling at a noticeably reduced price in comparison to the physical retail price.

Simple as that. As it stands, you are giving up certain aspects of your purchase (like being able to exchange/sell the game on) pretty much just in exchange for the convenience of not having to switch disks when you want to play a different game.

I don't know if it's pure greed, or trying to avoid upsetting the physical retailers who are obviously important partners, but either way it's not on in my view.

Consumers in the UK and Europe need to vote with their wallets and refuse to purchase anything at such inflated cost.

Cheeky bastards!! $60 plus 20% VAT is $72. £45,  or 54€. A game  costing 60 Euro is well overpriced already. And in the PS Store they still show games at 69.99€. It's DIGITAL for God sake. Hopefully the publishers are screwed, since Amazon US opened the PS Store section for digital codes download.

This is why I was against next gen going fully digital. I'll never buy games digitally unless it's on a sale, I've brought GTA 4 on PSN then loads on the steam sale but never brought a digital game full price, as the prices are just insane.

Another nail in the coffin for next-gen. What a major fucking scam and disgrace to this industry. Theres nothing next-gen about these fucking cash grabs of consoles. All they do is take major steps back and keep on showing how much of a waste of your money they are.   True gamers will always know that PC rules supreme, and that Nintendo are the last, true hardware/Software makers.

Once everything goes digital only or even worse cloud based, then they can charge any price they like. There is no way to physical obtain the software, other then downloaded for a server or streamed. It will eliminate competition and keep prices high.  The idiots out there calling for a digital only future, should be very careful what they wish for.

The prices the uk Psn charge for digital downloads are a friking disgrace and always have been. Who in their right mind would spend £50 £60 on a download when you can get a physical copy for £20 less. These Prats need a kick up the arse and need to pull their finger out if the new Psn is to be a success. (I can only dream)     ?:)

EA games.....charging you 60 plus bucks, then release day one digital contents, premium bundle packs, in game microtransactions.....and STILL not get satisfied.

Console game, accessory prices are always a joke, why PC is actually cheaper.

69€ for digital game is ridiculous. Hell I'm not going to pay that much even a physical copy. Thank goodness we are not living region locked ages anymore, I will import my games from somewhere where I can get them a bit cheaper even with shipping. 69 euros *facepalm*.

The price better change in the UK. Its a joke, its Digital Rape right now in the UK. The next gen want to push digital, then they should price it right. and learn from someone who has been doing it for years......Valve / STEAM

You Europeans are constantly getting screwed over on currency exchange for gaming. We get a good deal in Canada. Our dollar is usually lower than America, but we pay the same regardless.

Really hope these European prices are same as the retail, if not less!

its just EA games on that price, nothing of value.

I just thought of a funny idea. Us gamers form a union with are own website where we negotiate with the manufacturers about things like digital downloads etc... It could be a win win situation for gamers and companies alike. We could let them know what we expect and what we want from consoles, games and services. In return they would get valuable information and input about their customers. It could prevent them from making a lot of mistakes and pr disasters.

perhaps they think the novelty of buying things online should make it a premium? what a bunch of idiots. am truly sorry for my ps4 brothers and sisters in the EU. 2 steps forwards 2 steps back. last night I read on xbox live on black Friday they are having a nice sale on games.. dark souls for 5 bucks etc. they don't seem to understand that taking away something's inherent value should make it cheaper. can't sell your digital copy of ac4 on ebay after you buy it. makes you understand that used games don't hurt the industry, or else prices would be way cheaper.

These companies need to rethink their prices for digital download. Why should I pay the same or more for something that I don't physically own. With digital I cant trade it with a friend or sell it or trade it in. Also the prices for digital are almost always more for older games than you can buy them for used or new in the stores. We are doing them the favor by saving manufacturing and shipping costs. We should always pay less for digital. I hope everyone boycotts digital until they give us better deals.

normanislost
normanislost

But their £60 on the PS3s store already which is ridiculous to begin with when you can get the physical version for £10 less

What kind of moron thinks its logical for a digital version of a game to be more expensive than the physical version? The only upside is the convenience compared to having an actual disk, box and the ability to resell or lend to a friend

Valve does it right Microsoft and Sony are idiots when it comes to digital sales either charge the same price or cheaper not more expensive....

In other words EA and Ubisoft are getting their butts kicked as PS4 is outsell Xbox worldwide and they need to stop their DRM temper tantrums and get prices sorted

well I think retail games should be cheap  and digital think be more.

But after reading this sound to me that digital be cheaper and retail be more .

But I wont buy full price ps4 game unless its worth money.

I really think every game come on store should have demo to try game out .

Well, I only got Contrast and Resogun from PS+. so no money spent there.

Good, how is my body supposed to be ready if I have to sell it to afford my games.

@torbonator And the high prices are going nowhere. There is no middleman, no disc, packaging or shipping. Yet prices are still absolutely ridiculous.

@berserker66666 you see how EA is giving you a taste of battlepacks every couple levels on BF4's multiplayer. I guess people buy it otherwise it wouldn't be there. it's really a short term strategy vs. the long term. short term money from the people who would dish it out. long term you are going to turn people away from the franchise who aren't with it. other companies have assumed recently that their customers don't care about this and were wrong. to be honest if the next AC games have this shit it in I will never pick another one up. it bothers me that I have to see this stuff every time I boot up my game.

totally didn't know they were going to be in AC4.

@snaketus Amazon.com ships worldwide. That's what I'll be doing.  I'd be fuming if I was in the UK, they seem to have it even worse.

snaketus

@TERMINATOR-SSD Indeed, if they want me to buy digital, even try to price it right. No you have to pay more, but own only a bits. Yeah you can't even touch it!

@canuckbiker Indeed. The guy who came up with that 1 us dolllar = 1 euro should be hanged and hang again just for laughs.

demondogx

@normanislost every pc digital store has it for same price or cheaper, what is going on with xbox/ps stores is that there is no competition on it.

AzureBonds76
AzureBonds76

@Lillypaw Ubisoft is bad like EA...I can't believe all the ads on the menu screen on AC4 trying to get me to buy 1.99 packs...wtf.. such a shame bc ac4 is a great game and it totally detracts from the experience

Stebsis
Stebsis

@pszone Why should retail games cost less than digital? It's the opposite, with digital you cut out so much from the middle that it should be way cheaper but that's really not the case except on PC.

gilldominic

@torbonator @slainta His calculation was based on the American price, with the addition of the UK VAT percentage. He then converted it on the current dollar to sterling exchange rate.

The UK and Europe have long been getting ripped off by pricing policies in comparison to North America. This just takes it to a new level....

torbonator

@Garm31 @torbonator I could never understand how a digital game could be more expensive than a physical game when theres more costs in a physical game

@Dragon_Nexus @gameroutlawzz Yep,but you actually owned them, they were FULL games that didnt ask for more of your money once purchased, they also didnt show 74w87487326257263756726  bugs and glitches that requires 7483625765752 6 patches and months to fix.

@AzureBonds76 it's that or crazy sale pricedrops, when it is even cheaper to get digital than secondhand

But Steam etc also compete with retail stores I got borderlands true with more bonus content, physical disc/box and it was £5 cheaper than steam

Both consoles have to compete with those same stores infact more so because physical stores only stock PC games on their website where as everything console wise can be bought from a highstreet shop

@Stebsis Jim Sterling from Destructiod put out a few videos last summer which are very informative and do a good job explaining the whole situation. I highly recommend them to anyone that is unaware of the situation.

tc0072
tc0072

@torbonator @Garm31 The only reason is they have an agreement with the retailers. If digital games cost less than physical then a lot of retailers would go out of business. They still need the retailers to sell us the PS4s and Xbox Ones of this world so they won't shit on them completely.

Dragon_Nexus
Dragon_Nexus

@gameroutlawzz @Dragon_Nexus Really? You don't remember playing a single glitchy game in the 90s?

I know of plenty. I own plenty. I'm actually glad we live in an era where games *can* be patched. Ever played KotOR? Know how many people managed to complete Mission's personal quest the first time they played it due to a simple bug that made it impossible to complete if you visted planets in the wrong order? That was just last gen.

AzureBonds76
AzureBonds76

@mr_nee If Xbox live or PSN had steam-like sales, I would never need to buy used games. But hell, I picked up Far Cry 3 last month for 4.23, used, not bad.

demondogx
demondogx

@normanislost in some cases they do compete with retailers, but in enough cases ppl who dont live in crowded cities dont have a retail store anywhere close near them, their best option would be digital, as driving to the nearest might be a lot more epensive.
