PlayStation 3’s shooter Dust 514 redesigned for the PC as Project Legion

CCP also teased a future that ties its three games together.

CCP Games announced during its Fanfest event that it is working on a free-to-play PC shooter set in the EVE Online Universe that takes after the PlayStation 3’s Dust 514.

Dust 514 is a free-to-play multiplayer first-person shooter that even CCP admits wasn’t as great as it could be (we weren’t fans of it either). CCP said that Project Legion is very early in development, and that it’s not even certain it will come out, but the idea is to re-imagine Dust 514 for the PC with more of a sandbox experience.

"At the end of the day we want to take the things we’ve learned from Dust, and yes it’s in the same IP, same place and all the rest of it, but we want to do some fundamentally different things with it that we feel we missed out on and that we didn’t do right," VP of Product Development at CCP Sean Decker told Polygon.

CCP has clarified that it’s still still working on new content for Dust 514, and that if Project Legion does ever come out, Dust 514 players will be able to migrate their relevant data to the new PC game.

In case you missed it, GameSpot was at Reykjavik, Iceland for EVE Fanfest 2014, where we got a look at the latest version of EVE: Valkyrie, stunningly rebuilt in Unreal Engine 4:

Finally, CCP today revealed a trailer for something called The Prophecy, which implies that the company’s three games: EVE: Online, EVE: Valkyrie, and Dust 514 will converge in some fashion. The CGI trailer, which includes elements from all three games (large space battles, dogfighting, and infantry combat) simply ends with the words: “One universe // One war.”

Dust sucked... The UI/UX was horrible, so much so that I had to stop playing.  Really wanted it to be good.

The same team that couldn't build a balanced FPS on the PS3 is building the PC version, so I don't see them being any more successful. Pretty graphics yes, but balanced and fun gameplay no.

The "Prophecy" trailer is great, but isn't going to happen anytime soon if at all. EVE runs on a single shard at one "tick" per second and slows down (time dilation) when the server gets overloaded. The other two games run in real time on instanced servers with far faster response time. The basic architecture is incompatable and would require a full rewrite.

This is nothing but a PR move to keep people from migrating to Star Citizen which will have ship and FPS combat integrated from the start.

I hope it doesn't suck as bad as dust. A bland, generic, uninspired shooter if I ever played one.

i loved dust 514, at least the idea of it. when i got it it was in beta and i understand that it was a free to play but i felt that it was too complicated of a game to appeal as a fps. then the fact that it was so deep in micro transactions that players who paid had a clear advantage despite skill. i felt like it never left beta...

How can they merge all three games when this is based in a different timeline ?

if all three games converged into one it would be pretty cool.

If they are rebuilding it, I hope they are rebuilding the holy heck out of it, so that the game actually becomes fun and worthwhile to spend time playing.

Between Dust 514 and the aborted WoD MMO, I'm starting to wonder if CCP is just going to go down as a one trick pony with EVE. Granted, it's an incredibly interesting and unique trick that I'm glad exists even if I don't play it, but still. I hope I'm wrong because I'd love to see the philosophy of EVE applied to games that I'd actually enjoy playing, so hopefully Valkyrie and this pan out.

Just for those of you wondering why the hell CCP put Dust 514 on the PS3 and never on the PC was the fact that it was doing the game in collaboration with Sony and at that time Sony was bringing out Planetside 2 on the PC for the Free To Play market and didn´t want a clash there.

I bet my ass they are forced to port it on PC because it wasn't well recieved on the PS3.

They should have done this from the start, why would you release this on the PS3 where the fanbase is all on the PC? At least release it on the PS4, a console young in it's life and with fewer games so more people will be more likely to play it.

PcGamingRig
PcGamingRig

it isn't just a re-release either, they are rebuilding it completely. same location, same genre but being rebuilt from the ground up.

Why? It failed on PS3, why would it work any better on PC? Most of the PC players are in LoL, DOTA 2 and WoW anyway so it will likely only get about 10,000 players at the same time.

May as well just give up and work on something new.

If they make a great game, people will play it. As simple as that.

I am sure this will be a success on PC...  PC gamers like to buy bad games.

Dust 514 was the digital download pack in game for the debut of the Playstation 3 superslim along with Uncharted 3 GotY edition. I downloaded it but just played it once. After that it gathered Dust.

So a relaunch of sorts may help Dust 514 or whatever it ends up being called.

It was always a questionable decision to make a tie-in game for a PC exclusive MMO only available on console. I never understood the logic behind that.

WingChopMasta
WingChopMasta

All of the suckers live on PC so of course it makes sense to port over a failed console game.

Ps. Not sure why the name title is Eve: Valkyrie? That is a game that is not out yet, not a company. Search padding? Hmmm.

It seems like Sony is focusing on free to play and indie games. I'm not liking this.

PS3's failed shooter Dust 514 being redesigned for PC. Likely to continue to fail.

@Caldrin  have you ever heard of time dilation? i know nothing about EVE and how ships get around but travel near light for 1 light year...and time on earth would have moved forward by 23 earth years....but im sure they have sum sort of mass effect drive lols loved that series

@Dannystaples14

Different genres.
According to the sources in a graph from Nvidia, there are around 600 million players on PC, that is more than PS and Xbox Combined.
Project Legion has more chances to have a bigger playerbase.

@Dannystaples14  Those games aren't competing for the same market share as this would be. its biggest rival would probably be planet side 2

Lash540

@Auriken  They want the guys on PC playing EvE because it's a subscription based MMO. Dust 514 is free to play and you can do pretty much everything the EvE guys can, or at least that's where it's going. So if I wanted to run an empire in the game why would I bother playing EvE when I can just play Dust 514. Did I make any sense?

pelvist

@WingChopMasta  They arent porting over a failed console game, the game is being made from scratch and quite possibly on UE4 since they have licensing for it now. Its a re-imagining of what Dust 514 should have been, and it says so right here in this article.

Also subscription fees to play all their multi-player games on the bandwidth they already paid their ISP for is because the suckers live on consoles.

ECH71

@WingChopMasta  We're the suckers, really?

Why? Is it because we don't spend a few hundred dollars buying a dedicated box to play games at lower resolutions / frame rates instead of upgrading our existing home/work system for less money and getting better results?

@WingChopMasta remember - no Call of Duty before bed time, otherwise it will turn your brain to mush... oh, sorry, looks like it's already too late.

Sony has been doing free to play PC games forever, and the indies are PC ports, not exclusives taking sonys dev team recourses.

@MrMilkmann

Actually CCP vision with DUST 514 is ahead of it's time for consoles, from many aspects, it was downgraded, under conditions from Sony.

On PC, there are no limits, no restrictions from another company, and CCP can develop the game without downgrading their vision, fully merged with the EVE universe, also EVE online has more than 500k Subscribers. Project Legion can have as well those amount of subscribers or players.

@MrMilkmann  I went on it once and couldn't get into it. Wasn't very user friendly IMO. What's it like now?

Dannystaples14

@pelvist @Megavideogamer  It collected metaphorical, data fragments from the 3D world that is the inside of the internet! Which settled out on his game like digital dust and started to eat away at the software over time.

MrMilkmann
MrMilkmann

@iamllamapie @MrMilkmann I have no clue, I also tried it a while ago and it was horrible. So many menus and what not, then when I actually got into a battle, I was getting shot from behind a hill. It was worse than BF4.
