The open beta for Forza Motorsport 6: Apex launched today on PC, offering the first opportunity to play a Forza game on the platform.

As announced back in March, Apex is a free-to-play version of Forza 6 designed for Windows 10. It isn't a straight port of the version released for Xbox One last year; instead, it's a "curated experience" that's designed for newcomers to the series. As such, it doesn't offer cross-play with those playing Forza 6 on console.

Now Playing: Forza Motorsport 6 - Apex - Development on the Unified Windows Platform

The beta will last for at least several months, as developer Turn 10 has announced plans to offer updates over the course of the summer. These will bring things like wheel support and a way to disable v-sync, as well as performance improvements.

Apex is exclusive to Windows 10, and you'll install it through the Windows Store. If it's your first time using the store, you may want to first change the default installation location. Confusingly, this is not done through the store app; instead, hit the Windows key, type "Storage," choose the Storage option, and select the drive you want apps to install to.

The previously announced system requirements aren't particularly unreasonable, though you will need a much higher-end rig to take advantage of Apex's 4K support. You can find the minimum and recommended specs (for both 1080p and 4K resolutions) below.

All future Forza games are headed to PC as well as consoles. Details on the next game in the series will be revealed at E3.
