Play a lost Sonic the Hedgehog 2 level in new mobile version

Sonic fans can now properly play the Hidden Palace Zone for the first time.

A new, remastered version of vintage platformer Sonic the Hedgehog 2 includes a new level that was never finished in time for the original game's release.

The new version of the iOS and Android version of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 will include a completed Hidden Palace Zone, reports Joystiq, with the remastered mobile version of the game being developed by Sonic Retro duo Simon Thomley and Christian Whitehead.

Chunks of the level have been discovered by people digging through the game's ROM files, with common belief that the Hidden Palace Zone was a level designed to highlight Sonic's transformation into Super Sonic after collecting all seven of the game's chaos emeralds.

The Android version of Sonic 2 is now available on the Google Play store for $2.99. The new version of the game also contains a boss rush mode, and the option to play as Knuckles--a bonus that was originally offered when users combined the Sonic 2 and Sonic & Knuckles cartridges.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 was originally released for the Sega Genesis in 1992. It was (and still is) brilliant and I will arm wrestle anyone who says otherwise.

Sorry Martin but Sonic 3 & Knuckles outdoes Sonic 2. Both were great games and yes Sonic 2 had a better 2 player mode, but I still stand by Sonic 3 for its ability to SAVE progress and give you 2 games worth of content. I don't give a hoot about Sonic Generations, all it did was butcher what little good there was by forcing 3D sections into classic 2D zones. Sonic 4 still beats Sonic Gen

I could probably beat Martin in arm wrestling if I used both hands

Someone already made a mod ages ago that let people who had the emulator play "hidden palace zone", so how is this news really? It's going to be garbage on mobile.

I'm still waiting for DLC levels for Sonic Generations.

Wow Sega thanks for adding this new level to a system with NO FRIGGIN BUTTONS. Seriously guys, what is your love for mobile and PC that you can't make things like additional Sonic All Stars Racers and levels like this available for any of the consoles or handhelds?

Played way too much of that game back in the day. And think I even paid 40 quid for it as well.

That's really cool. I love the old Sonic games - and I remember reading about this level a few years ago when people hacked the ROMS. Awesome.

I play the X360 version constantly.

Why is the PC version better?

No fan-made romhack of Hidden Palace has ever been good, mainly since most just stole the layouts from Esrael's Sonic 2 Delta hack and didn't get creative enough to make the level interesting.

In this case, this is now an officially sanctioned Hidden Palace blessed by Sega, now with its own special gimmicks to make the level stand out. The bigger sentiment is that the level is officially complete 21 years after the game's release.

I'm still pissed off about that. The only DLC that ever showed up was that stupid pinball table that you got with the pre-order.

I'm glad to see other people enjoyed that game as well!

@john_matrix8953 I love that game, and I was waiting too. Sadly, I don't think it's gonna happen since Sonic people signed that console deal with nintendo.

It's called Sonic Mega Collection, and it was on like 4 differant systems.

There's no way that 2 was better than "Sonic 3 & Knuckles"

Never gonna happen man. I just got rid of my Windows Phone because there are 0 games on it.

Not to mention... acheivments are stupid and so is the gamerscore.

@cvantu Yeah, that last sentence makes this article into an editorial or opinion piece. It's our job to be opinionated in that obnoxious way.

Actually, though it was rumored there would be arm wrestling I couldn't be sure that calling Sonic 2 less than brilliant would trigger it. Thanks to this article I now know. That last sentence is arguably the most important thing IN this article and I will arm wrestle anyone who says it isn't.

The assisians creed game mirrors edge game. Zuma, monkey ball. There pleny of games on windows phone. Just the other night I was playing NBA jam on my windows phone 8.. Considering Sega put sonic cd, sonic 4 episode 1 on windows phone there is no reason for this not to appear.
