Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare won't charge for DLC, but what about microtransactions?

Free content on the way for Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare on Xbox One, Xbox 360, and (eventually) PC.

DLC for Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare will be free, developer Popcap Games has said.

"Yes DLC will be free," said PopCap marketing manager Gary Clay on Twitter when asked about future content for the third-person shooter. The first DLC pack for the game is expected to be released in the next few weeks.

Clay reiterated that PopCap has not announced anything regarding microtransactions for the title, however. For more information, last week GameSpot editor Carolyn Petit tackled the thorny possibility of in-app purchases making their way into the game.

PopCap producer Brian Lindley told GameSpot in February that Garden Warfare wouldn't feature microtransactions "at launch," but what does that mean for the future of the game?

They're using the same system they used for Mass Effect 3 multiplayer. DLC will be free (map packs and character packs). The new characters will be locked and require by the in-game sticker packs.

Personally I'm HAPPY that EA took this path for DLC (even assuming micro-transactions get added). I will glady play for hours to unlock all the characters without spending a cent of real money, because the core gameplay is fun AND I get free DLC on top of that.

I want to play this game but I can't do it with the possibility of microtransactions looming.

Of course it won't charge for DLC when said content would already be locked by default and has to be unlocked the usual way. :/

I'm going to buy this game at some point. But in reading some of the reviews. There are a lot of people that purchased this game on the assumption you could play it OFFLINE, which you can't apparently. I understand its just a multi-player game. However, I was hoping for a player Vs. BOTS mode that you could play offline like you can with some other games, But there is not AND this game does not offer split screen for those that want to play with their friends on the same TV.

I have to admit, I've been enjoying the hell out of this game the past week.

There isn't any microtransactions in PvZ: Garden Warfare. There might be someday. There might not be. Speculate speculate speculate.

Even if there is; so what? Skipping over a menu option to enjoy a game is pretty easy. I never bought any Spectre Packs in Mass Effect 3, but it never affected my ability to enjoy ME3's multiplayer, and I sure don't feel like my life is any less fulfilling as a result of not spending a few dollars on stuff I don't need.

People who want to pay for a boost, a weapon pack, or a cosmetic upgrade can do that if they want. They want the choice. They got the choice. There's clearly an audience for it. Everyone else can choose to ignore it. I do. It's a heck of a lot better than conforming to this weird idea that some people have, that devs owe them X, Y and Z, and how games should only cater to them and not to anybody else who might want something different.

There's enough hysteria surrounding this topic already without gaming websites spurring it on to increase traffic. I love you, Gamespot, but let's try to be a little more objective and less about pandering to fears and prejudices of the most vitriolic and self-entitled of gamers.

I loved the first Plants vs. Zombies, but now they're just milking it.  After they were acquired by EA I lost all interest and we can all see what they've become.

@Eighty_6d  It's a great fun game.. You won't need micro-transactions if they even introduce them, they will only be coins to buy sticker packs.. this will in no way spoil your enjoyment of this fun filled game.. (As you can tell I'm loving playing this game!)

@niknokseyer  Agreed!  Not into the player vs player.. but the 4 player online co-op is also excellent!  Great for younger gamers too.

@Gelugon_baat  Why the bummed out face? You mean you wanna be aggressively charged right out of existence for your DLC/microtransactions? And yeah, you have to actually PLAY the game, not PAY the game to help you unlock stuff. OMG Are you really that terrible at this game, or that impatient?

@spartanx169x Good thing that you haven't bought the game like I have and don't know anything about it.

YOU CAN PLAY SINGLE PLAYER AND YOU CAN PLAY SPLIT SCREEN.

Please, for future reference, don't comment on stuff you haven't tried and don't have a clue about.

@Rayzakk You must not have played the game yet. Because if you have you wouldn't be saying that. This is one of the best shooters that has come out in a while.

@Rayzakk  I was really skeptic about PvsZ 2, but after playing for some time I can say that it is a much better game than the first one, plus the paywalls are only there if you want them.

I get it, we all hate EA, but come on. As @arqe mentioned below, 3 games in 5 years and different platforms can hardly be considered milking a franchise.

@Rayzakk  5 years , 2 mobile game and 1 big platform game and you call that milking. good job , keep up the good work.

@smackdowner360 @spartanx169x You must have missed the part where I said I want this game. I'm going to get it when I get my XB1. Looks like a great game. I don't mind the online only stuff as I'm online 90% of the time.  Was just wanting people to be aware of what to  expect if they can't do online.

@semi74 @spartanx169xIs it really necessary for you to be condescending?
I was not pulling info out of thin air. I had a clear frame of reference and basis for what I said. And IF you look at Zamboni Gamer's comment I was partially correct . and so were you.PARTIALLY.

@semi74 @spartanx169xI' was going to all the reviews I have read. IF I'm wrong GREAT. That is not something I want to be right about. But there are lots of customer complaints on different shopping sites with all the same complaints

Though split screen is limited to the local horde mode only. You're out of luck if you want to play split screen online. Not sure why they did this.

@spartanx169x There is offline Garden Ops(tower defense mode) but you're right, there's no offline vs modes like TDM. Also, split screen is limited to XB1.

ggregd

@ZamboniGamer  Because split screen is for local multiplayer and they want everyone who plays online to have their own copy.
