Plants vs. Zombies 2 out on August 15 for iOS

Tower defense title now out in North America after soft-launch in Australia and New Zealand.

by

EA and PopCap Games will be launching Plants vs. Zombies 2: It's About Time on iOS via the Apple App Store this August 15.

This week, flora and reanimated fauna collide in an epic battle through time on your iPhone.

The sequel to Plants vs. Zombies is following a free-to-play model and features three new worlds, new plants and zombie types, and more than 60 levels. The game was slated to be out late this spring before being delayed. PopCap Games senior producer Allen Murray said that the delay was due to extensive testing of the game through numerous servers.

The game was soft-launched in Australia and New Zealand on the week of July 10.

There is no news on a PC or console release date for Plants vs. Zombies 2 at the moment.

Well, once again I proved that EA has the ability to ruin everything they touched. I played this for about 3 hours and I am now stuck in front of a pay wall. You need to purchase an insane amount of plants and upgrade to proceed.

hello guys i am also pissed that they have not released this game for android which is where they will get maximum downloads,i waiting for it too come out too, well i am not so much interested for pvz 2 on pc's and console as they are planning an other game named plants vs zombies garden warfare which will be in hd and will mostly come by next year ( i think) well for now we have no choice except to wait

Everyone complaining about 'free to play' in this game probably haven't played it. I got this game on the Australian iTunes a while back and my wife has finished every single level without spending a penny. If you suck at the game then paying for the win button is for you, if not then you really don't have to spend anything. The game also doesn't shove 'buy me' notifications down your throat like many other free games

you guys gotta understand the gaming business is about making money first.  Though I think they made a mistake not releasing it on every platform, you guys are making too big a deal about the F2P format.  You don't need to spend a dime to play everything in the game. Calm down

I am not the only one with the view but I want agree with the others saying "No to free to play". This is a bullshit business model which does not put the consumer first. I loved the original game and I refuse to play this as I will not support the free to play business model. The only exception to this is DOTA 2 which is free to play but the purchases are cosmetic. Valve have put the customer and quality of experience first and almost guilt you into buying stuff as it is so good!

EVERY PENNY SPENT ON THIS GAME WILL REINFORCE TO EA THAT THIS MODEL WORKS. BE LIKE ZAMMO "JUST SAY NO"

Wait a second...they aren't even releasing it on it's home system (PC) yet? I've lost interest. I don't have respect for companies that neglect the people who helped make sure they were able to successfully start.

I hope it comes out on Xbox Live Arcade sometime.

Its horrible what they did to this game. 2.99 for a plant.... really? Sure you can farm keys and unlock them, but they ruined the game from and easy going fun experience perspective.

I would rather pay up front than be nickeled and dimed to get already coded items. Probably will skip this.

I hate this kind of developers. First, be successful on PC and get profit to live through and leave and kick PC out of window.

Free to play is the worst! anyway when its  this coming to xbox live arcade

ethanm1834

Right on que will come the EA hate, then the free to play hate, followed by apple hate.

EA could give away a million puppies to a million orphans and it wouldn't make a difference, so thats a lost cause. Free to play has the consumer feeling nickeled and dimed or pay to win. Until you can actually convince them otherwise thats not going to change. The last one, the apple hate I never really understood. So moving right along.

EA ruins yet another great game. Free to Play model exploits now that the game was made a success on the PC that CLEARLY means the IOS is going to rake in MILLIONS.

Fuck you EA. Fuck. YOU.

I already see them milking this for about a year to rake in some money off the Free to Play model they got going and then release a 'complete' version on PC.

OH but wait! It'll be exclusive to Origin only and have as much DLC as Sims 3!
And that's how they'll eventually try to force everyone into Origin or tough luck situations with this sequel.

You lost me at 'FREE TO PLAY'

if its on pc will it still be free? ill pay either way heh

I like how easly they forget that PC gamers made this game so popular, when there was no smart phones and their operating systems around...
But PC gamers won't forget things like this...

IOS...

Fuck you EA...

PC is what made this game popular, so the least you guys could have done is release on PC first at least...

@mtait01 It requires you to go back and grind multiple levels every so often or pay to move forward. Its greedy game design. Defend it all you want, it is what it is.

@bdixon76

You cant unlock all the upgrades and plants even with the keys... I finished the game long before it launched in the States. Got it from the Australian AppStore. And the currency unlockable plants are quite important... and very very expensive to unlock. If I was to unlock the remaining plants & upgrades so that I have the full game... it is gonna cost me 25-30 USD... thts an insane amount!! Beat all the 3 worlds with all 3 stars and see for yourself (including the detours).
Quite unfortunate! :(

@Creasy1903 The reason is they know PC players will not pay 200 dollars in microtransactions to play a 15-20 dollar game

@dmastor I hate free to play games because they make you pay REAL money for stuff in a game.

@telarosTry calming down. Take a few deep breaths. They launched on iOS first. It's not the end of the world.

Popcap and EA have already confirmed this will come to other platforms soon.

And from what I've seen, the free to play aspect works well. Multiple friends and work colleagues have been playing this since in launched in Australia last month. All of them are loving it immensely. I would too if I had a iphone.

There's a review here, which mentions the Free to Play, if you're interested:

http://www.abc.net.au/tv/goodgame/stories/s3814325.htm

Not sure if the video will play for anyone outside Australia, sorry. You can read the transcript there anyway.

Quoted from review:

"BAJO
I'd never just buy progress in a game either, but since I was earning more coins in-game than I was spending, the balance felt right to me. I thought of the power-ups similar to the rewind we see in a lot of racing games. You can fix up a small mistake without having to redo everything. You can tell they've worked on the structure of the free-to-play model here, and I think they've got it just right.

HEX
Yeah absolutely. The original was a paid game, but I've enjoyed this more and I haven't spent a cent on any of the micro-
transactions.

BAJO
Yeah, I dropped a few dollars because I was having a good time and that's a good sign of a free-to-play game when you want to give something back to the developer. I'm giving this 9 out of 10 rubber chickens.

HEX
It's 8.5 from me."

@sadikmahdi No android since piracy. iOS is THE go to place where you only have one real way to play a game without backdoors and other hassles to cheat the store.

And iOS has a special feature too. Forces you to have a creditcard or bank account on record to use their store and if you click on stuff by accident, you can't get your money back!

You could end up spending about 18k on 'in game' currency that'll still likely not net you everything you'd need to beat the game.

So don't expect a android or PC version (which will likely not see a Steam release) for a good year at the least. Short of everyone bombarding EA with hate mail and pleadings to release this on PC or consoles.

bdixon76
bdixon76

@jigar7 @bdixon76 If that is the case, they ruined the game. F2P is the worst thing to ever happen to gaming.
