Plants vs. Zombies 2 nearing global Android launch

PopCap confirms game now available in Australia and New Zealand as part of soft launch; worldwide rollout expected "soon."

by

Free-to-play downloadable game Plants vs. Zombies 2 will be released across the world on Android "soon," PopCap Games announced today. The game originally launched on iOS in July.

The developer has also expanded the game's soft launch territories, pushing Plants vs. Zombies 2 live on the Google Play store today in New Zealand and Australia. This follows the game's release in China last month.

Plants vs. Zombies 2 has not been without controversy. A report from last week cited EA Labels president Frank Gibeau as saying "Apple gave us a truckload of money to delay the Android version [of Plants vs Zombies 2]."

EA said this comment was taken out of context and thus caused an "unfortunate misunderstanding." A paid relationship between Apple and EA does not exist, the company said at the time.

Plants vs. Zombies 2 launched in July as an iOS-exclusive and has been downloaded nearly 25 million times to date.

Don't mind picking up the Android version but it would have been nice if there was any news on the Steam version of this

Great news article here, the game is coming out "soon". Very informative, and no mention of PC.

When do us ipad-less players get to play this game?

Cash-shop garbage thanks to EA.

Pass.

Played PvZ2 on my ipad. But PvZ1 was better especially the mini games. PvZ2 is okay. Not so addicting mini games and few plants. Since it is F2P, i guess we need to wait for new content/stages in the future.

I'll just sit over here.

Playing real games.

With actual development cycles.

With actual content.

PvZ 2 is good, but its a lot harder and in my opinion not as good as the first one. It needs all the mini games the first one had that the second one lacks. Its also way harder.

PVZ 2 it's the first game from the series that i have played. So fucking addictive...

PvZ2 is pretty good.  I'm 80% of the way through and haven't spent a cent so far.  The paid unlocks are only necessary if you're the absolute worst player ever, or if you want to skip levels for some reason.

Waiting for the PC version before I give them any of my money, but enjoying the free2play version so far.

What a fantastic game PvsZ 1 was.  I finished it on the Vita and it was really an addicting game.  Hopefully this gets a Vita release some time in the future.  1 looked amazing on the OLED screen.

Screw you Popcap. I feel ashamed to be fan of your first game now. You neglect the market that started you guys off (I can't count the number of people I introduced PvZ to on the PC) and now all of us PC players who helped make sure your game spread are being thrown to the dogs. What a great company.

I love the title of this article.  15 years ago, this wouldn't have made any sense.

No paid relationship/exclusivity.  Uh-huh, sure.

Great game.  Just like the first, but even better.  Give it a spin!

Call me when they release a PC version because that's the only version that matters to me.

Where's the PC version?  You know, where the original game first launched and became a hit.

I'm curious what the proper context for "They gave us a truckload of money" actually is? Anyone? No?

I just don't get why it is taking so incredibly long for it to come out on other platforms. I would try it on PC.

I'm skipping it. The reason is 2 letters: EA.

@jharring Pretty sure that's in the plan, but for whatever reason they decided to do iOS and then Android first.

@Bowser05

Yup !!

I wonder if "EA" has anything to do with this "Marketing strategy" :)

@gatsbythepig We'd have read the word 'Android' and we would have lost our s***, thinking the age of the robots was finally here.

@Demonnuke @Bowser05 I keep forgetting EA has Popcap. Maybe I shouldn't be so harsh on Popcap, and I should really blame EA. Since I don't know who to blame, I blame them both for now.
