Plants vs. Zombies 2 hits Android worldwide

PopCap's free-to-play strategy game sequel now available globally through Google Play.

After 25 million downloads on iOS, PopCap Games' free-to-play strategy game sequel Plants vs. Zombies 2 is now available worldwide for Android. The game is available today through Google Play and features full integration with Google Play Game Services.

According to Plants vs. Zombies franchise business director Tony Leamer, the Android version of Plants vs. Zombies 2 will include all the same features and functionality found in the iOS version.

Players can face every zombie and access every level in Plants vs. Zombies 2 at no cost, though upgrades and other in-game items are available for purchase with real money.

Plants vs. Zombies 2 has not been without controversy. In September, Apple denied paying PopCap owner Electronic Arts to delay the Android version of the game after EA Labels president Frank Gibeau reportedly said, "Apple gave us a truckload of money" to do so.

Looks like they pulled it from the Google Play store already...   Another "stellar" EA launch?

No offense but refusing to play a great game just because of In-App Purchases is just plain stupidity.

The game here, contrary to what you might have read from most reviews, doesn't force you to buy something. I heard someone complaining that ads to buy something popped up every 2 minutes - maybe that person somehow downloaded a hacked version from outside sources with malware programmed in it. The genuine game from Google Play Store doesn't have such ads. Heck, the only time I noticed that this game had IAPs is during the tutorial, showing what the Shop Button does.

If ever the game seems to force you to buy an item, it's either you badly want to complete the game in just one sitting or you've skipped the first game, making the later Levels in this game hard for you because of lack of experience that one gets from playing the first game.

Also, I read a lot of complaints why the Premium Plants (plants from the first game plus a new one) were included in the IAPs. Just what is it with those old plants other than nostalgia that people wanted to have it in the game?

With all those points presented, the "I'd rather buy a complete game than to purchase contents little by little!" complaint doesn't apply to this extremely fun sequel. If you have this kind of attitude toward this game, you're like a person who, after being given an option to get a free phone but has to buy the jelly case separately, would complain why it didn't come with the phone in the first place.

I don't doubt that people would still complain if they removed those Premium Plants and the purchasable optional Upgrades, and say something like the "Bah! The game doesn't have the same amount of content the first one did so I won't play this" - This is totally $%!@*#^!!! Why complain if the game is totally free?

Lastly, don't rush to complete this game, you'll just end up with frustration. Instead, you should take time and admire the challenges it presents. If the game can indeed be completed in one sitting, you wouldn't like waiting for possibly another 3, 4 or 5 years for the third game.

It's about fucking time and now that it is out on Android, it will get downloaded 100-200 million times. crApple must have paid PopCap an awful lot of money for timed exclusivity on their platform and considering iOSpoop has 100 million users where as Android has 1 Billion, that must have cost crApple quite a bit.

Still not available in playstore. Why wouldn't Gamespot verify this before going to print?

5 (whatever currency) for PC with the game rebalanced for no grinding and all microtransactions REMOVED.

BTW, its nowhere to be found in the play store, just guides and other stuff.

... And the first thing I thought? It's about time. Sorry my subconscious is making puns everybody.

Sorry. I don't support cash-shop garbage. It's a shame because I enjoyed the first and would have paid full price for the second.

The option to pay for ingame advantages is just insulting.

@obsequies How do I do that? Sorry I suck at technology. But Ive been waiting for this stupid fucking game for years and now its saying that its not compatible with my Bell Samsung SGH-T679M.  Please respond!

Update:  Ironically it wouldn't show up in the Android store -- I had to log in via my laptop browser, then remotely install it from the "Top New Free" list.   (There's a link below in the posts that isn't the correct version for most regions, BTW)

@Lightposte my only problem with this game so far is that it DEMANDS that I play the very same level with little changes in the rules so I can keep playing new levels. I HAVE to play every single level 3 times to earn stars to open a new world, and I HAVE to keep playing forever and hoping some keys fall randomly to unlock some extra stages.

the first game had one new plant/zombie/gift after each single level, and the progression was linear, there was no grinding. it had tons of mini games, a zen garden and a 50-level main quest. this one... is free.

if they asked $5 for all locked plants and $5 (or even $10) for the mini games the first game contained, I would happily be playing until now. instead, they want $4 for each of the almost useless plants, release no minigame whatsoever, and force me to grind while promotions about discounted coin and upgrade bundles show every other hour...

I just played until stage 10 on the wild west set and maybe won't even come back when they release the future set because I just can't stand grinding for 40 more stars... the first game was a game I played forever, this game is a game I played for a week or two. and yes, I rather pay to play for months than have a free game that lasts two weeks.

@Cyampagn Google "BlueStacks."
But it won't run smoothly on old/slow computers though.

@PETERAKO I'm really hoping that they'd add more contents for the PC version to compensate for the long wait and make it a paid game but without the old plants from the first game.

@Tripwolf Would you also be insulted if someone offers you a free phone with an optional accessory to make it look cool but you have to pay for it?

ExtremePhobia
ExtremePhobia

@Tripwolf They did a breakdown of the costs and the cost of buying everything isn't much more than what you would have paid for the original PvZ at launch. Hardly game breaking. It's more like an extremely fleshed out Demo.

@MigGui I hate in game purchases, its sort of sitting there and tempting you to buy and sometimes developers design the game in a way that its damn tedious to play it without buying the extra stuff. I would not mind paying for games up front as long as the experience would not be annoying but in app purchase is something i avoid as much as possible myself.

Nothing.

As a matter of fact, I hate EA as much as most/all people do.
If EA indeed paid me, then I would've promoted the items available for purchase in this game instead of completely ignoring the IAPs. If you would've observed that, then you wouldn't have thought EA paid me.

I just can't stand why people immediately judge a book by its cover.

@obsequies  there is nothing called 256GB in mobile devices neither the RAM nor the HDD can reach this number

I read somewhere that you need to hold "Ctrl" and then click what you need to pinch. I'm not sure though if it's for BlueStacks or the official Android Emulator from the Android SDK .
