Plants vs. Zombies 2 downloaded nearly 25 million times

New strategy title from PopCap Games exceeds total lifetime downloads of original Plants vs. Zombies one month after launch.

Free-to-play strategy game Plants vs. Zombies 2 has been downloaded nearly 25,000,000 times, PopCap Games studio owner Electronic Arts announced today. This is up from 16 million earlier in the month.

The game launched in the middle of July for iOS devices. It will be released on other platforms in the future.

Downloads of the game have exceeded lifetime downloads for the original Plants vs. Zombies, which was originally released in 2010, EA also announced.

Since launch, players have faced 5.4 billion zombie waves and planted 10 billion plants. Overall, Plants vs. Zombies 2 gamers have logged 81 million hours in the game.

It doesn't mean it's successful, it's the same game, but it's not the same year now.

I'm pretty sure there are more PC's and Android devices out there than iOS devices, plus it started on PC, so why the delayed release?

Blame EA I guess.

Wow, PC gamers will find any way to complain. "It didn't come on PC first? I feel betrayed." Sorry the world doesn't conform to your needs. This isn't an adventure game, it suits iOS better as a pick up and go platform.

You don't need to buy any of the real money crap, its only for old plants from PvZ1 and gold coins that you can otherwise earn in game. It's free and it's fun, no reason not to play this.

I don't care what they do until they stop neglecting the guys who helped them start up: the PC market. I understand the power of the iOS market but couldn't they have done a simultaneous release? I'm disappointed with the way they are handling this...but at the same time I'm still interested in checking this out when it hits PC. I loved the first one. Hm.

Am I the only one who has gotten pretty far in the game without having to spend a cent? I hate free to play games but pvz2 is nothing like candy crush or other free to play games like that. Ppl should give it a chance first before complainimg

It's good, but I would have liked to pay $20 for a full version of the game. And not a nickel and dime free to play bull shit.

Wow! With that many downloads, you would think that the second one was free, while the first one wasn't!

Fact: All 25 million downloads were initiated by 9th grade student Samuel Langhorm Chimmens of Uzbekistan, Ohio.

I'd like to see how much its made, I believe it has transactions? well its interesting to see how it compares to console games that even at $40, if they sell 300,000, thats 12 million.

The only thing really keeping me from buying this is the fact that my money will be going to EA.

Also the reason I avoided their Humble Bundle

It's about time.....but when is that time???

I still can't believe they released this for the iphone FIRST considering the original PvZ was released on PC FIRST... Actually kinda pisses me off, but oh well... I am sure I am probably missing some important information regarding the features of the PC release that would justify its delay(or am I?), but I really don't care.

Even if you don't make any in app purchases, every time its downloaded the further we push it up the charts the more successful it will be and the more likely all games will become pay to win. if you love games don't download this EA Pay to win trash

@Metallicwolf29 I just beat the first chapter without spending a dime, and I am sure I can complete it in a same manner.

@Metallicwolf29 Buying stuff in the game even makes the game less interesting... The microtansactions in pvz2 are only for people without patience

Lets guess 20% people made IAP, since there is no 1$ thing in this game, lets say each made a 5$ IAP on average. Thats. 25 million $ (if my maths is not poor)

@kid_Jump94 lets see here: 0.80 (hypothetically saying  that each of those people made ONE 80 cent transaction) x 25,000,000 = 20,000,000..... I'd say thats more money.

@HowlPendragon I thought the only thing keeping you from buying this is because its free.......

Alpr1010
Alpr1010

@HowlPendragon You chose where to send whatever money you paid for the games at. 6 or so charities to chose from, and there was also a money slider for EA. You can give 100% to charities and give EA nothing.

I hate EA almost as much as you (since I bought the bundle lol).

DESTROYRS_F8

@HowlPendragon i hate EA so much, it was free on iOS and I was able to get a money hack without doing any sort of microtransaction.

R4gn4r0k

@HowlPendragon Shame. None of that 10 million dollars the humble bundle raised went to EA. Not one cent, it all went to charity and some of it to the humble bundle guys.

@Lu_Shen Yeah, kind of frustrating for a big fan of the original who bought it before it became popular.

@de-astroturfer You don't have to spend a dime on this game. You just have to play it and you can acquire everything. (Except one plant I guess that you have to buy.) So this game is not pay to win.

Ayzed
Ayzed

@rann89 @Ayzed is that about the same level of intellect it takes to play the game?

HowlPendragon
HowlPendragon

@R4gn4r0k I'm aware of that but idk. I just don't usually believe any of that "all goes to charity" nonsense whenever I hear it, as much as I of course want it to be true.

Dante0611

@Frosty192 @de-astroturfer all this free games are P2W the time that you have to invest on them is artificially elongated, if you want to buy all the content in this game will more than likely cost you 10 times the price of a AAA game on lunch and the list keeps going, there is not such thing as F2P games, they are all a scam. only 2 exceptions that i can say that are purely cosmetical are DOTA 2 and TF2.

de-astroturfer
de-astroturfer

@Frosty192 @de-astroturfer All pay to win games work like that, thats the definition of pay to win. the difficulty curve is usually artificially steep to encourage payment or the game grinds the player with repetitive tasks which are negated with payment, games which hold back features are not pay to win, thats purely IAP.

You can argue that PVZ2 hasn't got an artificially high difficulty curve or that it doesn't grind the player but you cant argue its not pay to win or that the IAP's aren't extortionate. furthermore if this model succeeds all games will eventually become pay to win, which will be a bad thing for our industry, with compromised gameplay and ill informed parents with click happy kids being fleeced by greedy cynical corporate thieves.

devild0ogwhite
devild0ogwhite

@HowlPendragon It does all go to charity, because to EA 10m is nothing.  They could throw that much away and not slow down for a second, what they did do however, is turn it into 10 million dollars worth of good will and free advertising.  Brilliant, yet standard, move made by many big companies with a negative image.

de-astroturfer
de-astroturfer

@Dante0611 @Frosty192 @de-astroturfer Totally agree I don't know why these companies don't just cut to the chase and send out phishing emails to kids asking for mummy and daddies credit card details for all it amounts to !
