Planetside 2 takes on competitive gaming with MLG partnership

SOE joins forces with MLG to bring an eSports element to MMOFPS.

A new partnership between Sony Online Entertainment and Major League Gaming has been formed to bring PlanetSide 2 into the world of eSports and competitive gaming.

Over the next few months, the PlanetSide 2 and MLG teams will work closely together to develop ideal competitive gameplay features and settings to showcase an eSports feel within the game. Such features have not yet been specified, but will be in line with other current popular PC competitive gaming titles.

In November after PlanetSide 2's release, creative director Matthew Higby said to Polygon that he believed PS2 already had two of the three elements to be a viable game in eSports: a high skill ceiling, and gameplay that’s interesting to watch. Tournament modes and other in-game features are the third element. Higby also noted that while the community is interested in eSports, players are concerned this will take away from the open experience they’re used to.

The year-long collaboration will see online tournaments hosted on MLG's tournament platform GameBattles, and livestreaming content produced through MLG's Twitch.tv channel. PlanetSide 2 gaming stations will be featured at MLG's first event in 2013, March 15-17 at the Winter Championships in Dallas, Texas.

"PlanetSide 2 players are extremely loyal to their chosen Empires and when it comes to battling, they are beyond competitive and truly enjoy the in-game rivalries so it was the natural next step for us to bring PlanetSide 2 to the most competitive eSports organization," said John Smedley, president of Sony Online Entertainment. "We're excited for this opportunity to work with MLG and are confident that their competitive gaming expertise can turn PlanetSide 2 into a premier eSports platform, allowing us to extend the game experience and deliver new ways for players to interact with other players and the broader community, while helping to further diversify and grow our audience."

"From the first time I played PlanetSide 2, I knew that it made sense for the MLG community," said Sundance DiGiovanni, CEO and co-founder of Major League Gaming. "I am excited to introduce the game to our audience and to see how it evolves along with the growing and evolving eSports landscape."

I want dinosaurs on Indar. The threat of being eaten by a T-Rex or dive bombed by a pterodactyl would be awesome.

Taking away vehicles and fun weapons and stripping the game to its bare bones, that's what MLG did to Halo and I fear that's what it will do to PlanetSide.

I just wasn't able to get into this game.

I am a huge Planetside fan. I've spent more time playing Planetside than any other game by far. I excited to hear about this MLG change because the game offers so much more excitement than other multiplayer games. The Planetsdie 2 community is very hardcore and tightly organized squads are common to find. My outfit on Connery, Hell From Above, constantly runs tightly formed platoons/squads that require lots of voice communication and use specific tactics to quickly turn the tide of gigantic battles. We already act as if we're training for tournaments, so this is great news as long as SOE they can figure out how to set up tournament modes in the game that separate the competition from the general pop. TR forever!

This game has a few issues still and I dont know about it being an esport but I do know its the only FPS game I ever play because nothing else comes close. If you have a good computer and like FPS I dont know why you wouldnt play this its free and actually good.

I really don't see how you can make this game an esport without taking away from the experience. Like what are they gonna do? Create lobbies that limit the map size/number of players/vehicles? That would basically be playing BF3; not that there's anything wrong with that per say but that's not what planetside is about.

It's a great game!  Best thing is that the battle never ends!  But for it to be in a competition?  It would be interesting to see how they will set up a controlled environment for whole lot of people to play against each other.

After 10 years, finally a PC FPS at MLG.. It was always weird to watch console FPS games played at a "competitive" level with controllers and auto aim assist enabled for the "pro" players, it's like watching the paralympics of video games.

I'll definitely tune in for at least the finals of this game.

@Jonny-Two-Delta How mature of you. Care to explain why you have such a strong dislike toward something that is making your hobby better in the long run?

@CaesarIIII MLG has had an extensive track record of making balanced game-types within the games they have choose to feature in their pro circuit. I'm sure this game will be no different. Expect this game's population to sore quickly after MLG is done collaborating with the developer.

@Yuusha09 Is the standard game 2,000 vs 2,000? Can anybody explain to me what are the max and minimum amount of players that can be in the game at the same time? Is it different for various game-types?

@YYankee You don't play in matches or rounds. It is a constant battle that never ends. There are 3 continents, each with around a 2000 player cap. Split between 3 factions. Population varies depending on the peak/dead hours in the respective time zones.
