Sony Online Entertainment announced Monday that its free-to-play MMOFPS Planetside 2 has set a new Guinness World Records title for "Most players online in a single FPS battle."

The record was achieved on January 24 when SOE partnered with PlanetSideBattles for a massive in-game war between all three Planetside 2 Empires. In all, 1,158 players simultaneously duked it out in one instance on the game's Jaeger competitive server.

The previous world record holder was the game Man vs. Machine, which in 2012 saw 999 people simultaneously compete. According to Planetside 2 producer David Carey, the first Planetside actually held the original record for most players online in a single FPS battle.

"We're thrilled to have officially taken it back with PlanetSide 2," Carey said. "It's truly the players that define the game and we'd like to extend a BIG congratulations to our players for reaching such an accomplishment nearly every night, as well as thank them for making PlanetSide 2 exactly the type of experience it was meant to be."

Planetside 2 is available today on PC, while the PlayStation 4 version recently entered a closed beta testing period ahead of its public release.
