Pikmin 3 tops Japanese sales charts

Sequel to Nintendo's real-time strategy game boosts Wii U sales to 22,199 units.

Nintendo's latest sequel to the real-time strategy Pikmin series was well-received in its native country of Japan.

Japan really loves its multi-colored plant-like alien lifeforms.

The latest Media Creates sales data for the week of July 8 (via Neogaf and Famitsu) has revealed that Pikmin 3 was at the top of the software sales chart, with 92,720 units sold. This was followed by Level 5's latest 3DS RPG Youkai Watch which sold 53,654 units. Nintendo's pseudo-sequel to New Super Mario Bros. U, New Super Luigi U, was at fifth place with 24,881 units sold.

The Wii U also experienced a big rise in sales, though it did not overtake the top spot on the hardware sales that was held by the 3DS. The Wii U was at 22,199 units while the 3DS was at 43,435 units.

Pikmin 3 puts players in the shoes of three space explorers who have to lead an army of plant-like creatures called Pikmin to help collect fruits and harvest seeds for their dying homeworld. New features include Wii U gamepad and touchscreen controls, and new Pikmin like the Rock Pikmin and Winged Pikmin. The game is slated for release in North America on August 4; Europe and Australia will get the game early on July 26 and July 27, respectively.

For all the trolls out there......we've not seen actual sales numbers for your choice.  Pre-orders and sales are two different things!

Not surprising. First party Nintendo games are the heart and soul of their consoles. It's what makes the machines worth owning. I always buy Nintendo home consoles for those first party gems.

Pikmin 3, Mario 3d, Mario Kart 8, Donkey Kong, Zelda are all good reasons to pick up a WII U

Reggie needs to get these US release dates moved up. Why are we always left out of Nintendo goodies when we are the largest consumer of Nintendo products?

These numbers are weak, not enough to move millions like Nintendo needs

@Lord_of_Terrans I've never played Pikmin, and my WiiU is sitting, I don't even turn it on for weeks at a time.  I pre-ordered Pikmin 3 and I am really hoping I will like it.

I've been running my WiiU since Christmas and I've only had a little fun with it here and there, and usually not for long.  Probably the most use I got out of it was when I had a friend stopping by a lot for a couple weeks in winter and he was boosting me on Super Mario.  By myself, I just didn't care to play Super Mario anymore.  I have other games and those 30 cent VC titles, but nothing really kept me playing.  ZombiU was a big disappointment, it was tense but otherwise nothing about it was interesting, and it didn't take long for me to completely lose interest.

Overall I don't really like the WiiU, and I've been forcing myself to try to like it, spending money.  At some point though, I gotta just cut my losses and accept it.  I pre-ordered Windwaker HD and Pikmin together during a promo for $20 off each.  If I don't like either of them, that will probably be the time to give up.  I kinda knew from the start I probably wouldn't like the WiiU, I mean I wasn't really a Nintendo fan, but there were some other factors that pushed me to get one.

Man, why did I write all that?  I think I need a join a support group of unhappy WiiU owners :).

@Lord_of_Terrans It will be a wise investment. It is a wonderful game, a beautiful, an extremely underrated game.

@unam10122 Thats because PR fanboys work exclusively for big American companies M$, Google, Apple, Adobe all have irrational fanboys who would find an excuse for genocide if the company they worked for was accused of it, not wishing to sound anti American, Americans have to put up with it as much as everyone else but they are the country who gave the world scientology brainwashing is part of their corporate culture.

@ominous_prime Nintendo is afraid of the NA market and they always wait the sales result of the Japan market to decide. This is ok for a business stand point but awful to us, players who (and I can't believe that I may have not heard of this game !) sometimes have to pull the strings out of them to have games like Xenoblade Chronicles.

explain how these numbers are weak in Japan?  if it was globally then sure.

@HonorOfGod Says you, since both of those series sell like crazy that won't be happening any time soon.

@HonorOfGod @jrcast84 Almost all genres of games have been explored :( but how those games are approached are still able to be explored. I think the Wii U needs to work hard on same room multiplayer. I think its their strongest suit. And find a way to combine it with online multiplayer. I'd like to see 4 groups of same room players playing online against other groups in mario kart and games like F Zero and GoldenEye.

@HonorOfGod @jrcast84  Wonderful 101 is a new game, but I do understand the feeling. I have been with Nintendo since NES and have every system mostly for nostalgia.

ominous_prime

@MikeDrawsALot @ominous_prime The games done. Your argument is false. The goodies include the variant colors available that the UK and EU are getting as well as Japan gets. In the US, NA doesn't seem to be doing right by us. We want that Nintendo goodness here!

HonorOfGod

@yavix @HonorOfGod Never said they dont sell i simply said a vacation to help nintendo 's image and get nintendo players to buy more games and try new things besides them which will move consoles.

I have a WiiU and have had every single nintendo system since the nes and I have not used a nintendo console as a main since the Snes.

bunchanumbers

@HonorOfGod I never played a AC game. I'm a bit of a old guy here in thinking that Square needs to stop trying to please western customers and should have just focused on making a awesome game with a great story. They are doing things to FF XV that I am not so sure of. Same thing happened to DMC too. I seriously think that Megaman needs to make a comeback now. Its been about 10 years now right? lol feels like it.

HonorOfGod

@bunchanumbers Its not just Nintendo its all 3 but I do have respect for Sony's first party devs trying mew things.

I think its every dev not just 1st party do like Ubi and Square enix, capcom ext. they are so scared to try new things.

jrcast84

@HonorOfGod @jrcast84 Nintendo needs some new people with fresh ideas, we all know Mario games are great and sell. But thats will only go so far.

HonorOfGod
HonorOfGod

@Sampawende @bunchanumbers @HonorOfGod Thats the thing they were acting like it was still the year 2006 and the world has changed also does so called casuals are now playing cut the rope and facebook games... well fb games are going downhill too.

A new head at nintendo is needed to replace Iwata and come up with a solid strategy.

HonorOfGod
HonorOfGod

@bunchanumbers @HonorOfGod @Sampawende Very true in a few years I wonder what Nintendo's situation will be like because of that. We might get people saying they need a new console by that time  but nintendo might not listing and the devs will avoid them even more.

Sampawende
Sampawende

@bunchanumbers @HonorOfGod @Sampawende I don't really think that we can blame them, they tried out the same thing they did with the Wii and that has been proven to work. The only thing is that they probably tried to surf on a buzz that has already died a long time ago and they should have focused on created a new one, and that's actually what they also tried with the game pad, but that was far unsuficient. And now their only salvation resides on first party titles.

bunchanumbers
bunchanumbers

@HonorOfGod @bunchanumbers @Sampawende with the stats I listed they could have run games like skyrim on high/ultra settings if it was a pc. It also would have ran Metro LL without a problem. That's what I'm more concerned about. 5 years from now it will be almost impossible to have 3rd party games that will equal the ps4/X1 games.

bunchanumbers
bunchanumbers

@HonorOfGod @Sampawende I gotta blame reggie and Iwata for that one. I really think they should have went guns blazing in on a higher end box. It doesn't even have to be a god box. quad core processor with 4 GB of ram and a 1 GB of VRAM and they would have enough power to be viable for 6 years easily.

HonorOfGod
HonorOfGod

@Sampawende @HonorOfGod Indie games are great dont get me wrong but I really dont think we buy $400 gaming machines to play does types of games they are more like an extra or bonus to have which is great but its not moving any consoles at least if you ask me.

If anyone can sell a console at a loss and gain profit through software its Nintendo and I believe they should have done that. Their traditional instant profit ways wont work this time around. Its like the original Wii has blinded nintendo from the real world and totally disconnectd them from reality.

bunchanumbers
bunchanumbers

@HonorOfGod Well I'll probably be buying the Wii U version of Watchdogs and of course I'll be getting Bayonetta 2 and Project X from Monolith. I'll also be getting the wonderful 101 and the new game that the guy who made conker is working on. Beyond that there is little more I can do to support 3rd party games.

Sampawende
Sampawende

@HonorOfGodActually they could have done that, but following their business plan, it was useless and less-profitable. Look at what they (mostly Reggie) did with the Wii  :

Wikipedia --> wiki/Reggie_Fils-Aime

You'll then understand why the Wii U is not a tech monster. And the funny thing is that they are not wrong in this world where indie games are taking more and more place and where graphics are reaching limits too quickly. What they truly need to do is change their plocicies so that developpers may develop easier on Nintendo systems.

HonorOfGod
HonorOfGod

@bunchanumbers @HonorOfGod Agreed but that would only have got nintendo players buying it.

If nintendo had a machine that could handle 3rd party games that are on Ps4 and xbone people would have got it to use it as their main and would prob even pass on the Ps4 but boy did they drop the ball.

bunchanumbers
bunchanumbers

@HonorOfGod I really think they should have put their heavy hitters out at launch. I really think that Smash and Zelda at least should have been a launch title. Something right out of the gate that would have moved consoles.

HonorOfGod
HonorOfGod

@bunchanumbers @HonorOfGod Hey dont feel bad for me I had a feeling this was going to happen just not this bad lol.

Just because nintendo can take a hit does not mean it should they should have invested all that money into a much better console or at least much better games to get 3rd party to join in but nope.

bunchanumbers
bunchanumbers

@HonorOfGod lol true. Besides once the mario titles launch and the console is selling again most people will forget the hard times. I feel bad that you're among the people suffering the lean times though :( its always tough for early adoptors.

HonorOfGod
HonorOfGod

@bunchanumbers @HonorOfGod @yavix No its not : (

anything that has to do with Mario and Zelda has to leave the scene for at least a full decade. Oh well its not like Nintendo takes any feedback and advice from people.

bunchanumbers
bunchanumbers

@HonorOfGod @yavix well it is year of Luigi so mario isn't making a appearance until Mario 3D world in december so its over a full year of no mario. Its a start.

yavix
yavix

@HonorOfGod @yavix  That won't help Nintendo, it would destroy them. If they even put Mario on the shelf for more than a year I would hurt the company financially. I get what your saying, I do, and I agree that Nintendo's image could use a little tweaking.

Sometimes I believe that Nintendo will never be anyone's main console again. Not with Sony and M$ around. Even if they got all the 3rd party support, had identical specs to the PS4 and Xbox 1, I believe people would still find some reason not to give Nintendo a chance. Kinda pessimistic, but hey that how I see it.
