Phoenix Wright movie in session February 11

Big-screen adaptation of courtroom adventure series gets Japanese release date; first trailer to debut on November 5.

The last news gamers heard about the upcoming Phoenix Wright (or Gyakuten Saiban) live-action movie was confirmation of the director (Takeshi Miike), its release window, and the list of actors on the project. Just recently, Capcom announced a firm release date for the movie: February 11 in Japan.

Any objections to this portrayal of Phoenix Wright?

In addition to showing the first official screenshot of actor Hiroki Nariyama (from Yakuza 4) as the title defense attorney, the official teaser site also said that the trailer will be shown on the preview reels for all major films in Japan starting November 5. The movie's theme song will be sung by Japanese group Porno Graffiti.

The Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney adventure games see players control the aforementioned defense attorney as he defends his clients via cross-examinations. For more, check out GameSpot's review of the original DS installment of Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney.

How long do you think until Hollywood with it's creative and original ideas remakes this?

This will be hilarious. I saw the broadway show in Japan and it was so dramatic and corny, I nearly died laughing. So I'm sure it'll be the same for this: outright horrible and awesome at the same time.

The game was 'flipped' for its release outside Japan so that the text would flow left to right. Also, left-handedness in Japan is trained out of people from early childhood, and this is why 'Phoenix Wright' is right handed in the image above, as it is the "correct" way. Finally, unless you're familiar with Takashi Miike's more recent movies, you won't really get why he's likely the only director in the world that could possibly pull off a live-action version of the game. (He also directed the live-action Yakuza movie that most North Americans aren't even aware of.)

lol this game is made by Japanese and for Japnese and most likely for Asia, why americans have to argue about it? There are a ton of live action movie based on anime and game, this is not a surprising news

He doesn't look like Phoenix Wright at all.

This...was a terrible idea. Almost as bad as putting him as a fighter in Ultimate Marvel VS Capcom 3.

I think making it an animated adaption would have been a better decision.

And once again i feel that the movie industry will do a major screw-up in a movie adaptation... In fact, movies should do their own damn IP. Even manga adaptation sucks (e.g. Battle Royale)

I always get cold feet when games turn into movies. I hated MK, RE and SH movies, so, probably I won't watch this. Besides, it looks like a Japanese Law and Order... I'll stick to the original one.

@ab5mch I mean appearance-wise...

I would have also preferred an animated movie over live-action @StJimmy15 I'm pretty sure it's never specified that he's American (maybe in the localised Western version?) I always assumed he was Japanese as in the original Japanese game his name is not Phoenix Wright but Ryuichi Naruhodo. Edgeworth also has a Japanese name

If you're going to put an American in your game you should probably have an American play him... Just saying.

I know the games are from Japan and it's a Japanese movie, but seeing a Japanese person play Phoenix is just strange.

If Capcom's refusing to bring over a proper game in the series like AAI2, I really don't think this will leave Japan. One of my biggest pet peeves is No Export For You.

Gawd no! For a moment I was like OMFG a Phoenix Wright movie! This sucks. The fans oughta boycott it out of production. Why cant we have an anime based movie, the way its supposed to be. Or better yet, a new game...

naomeh

I object. I don't want to see another one of my favorite things ruined in a live action version of it. Death note, Dragonball, Avatar: The Last Airbender... Why can't they ever have a serious real-world detached conversion of the game/anime/whatever instead of clinging desperately to everything the original is and risking disappointing fans? As in, not doing his hair like that and making his suit that tiny.

I'd rather have a new game, thanks.

@ SilentCard Sorry, maybe I'm just an idiot, but I don't see the connection. Phoenix points with his left-hand, but in this image he is right-handed. Now, if this image were flipped, this mistake would make sense, as he is now left-handed, but because most people are right-handed, we cannot rule out that this photo is valid. Regarding the Lady Justice statue, there is one on both sides of the courtroom in the teaser, so that's not a good indication to determine what side of the room Phoenix is on, because one half of the courtroom is a duplicate reflection of the other. There's not enough info to go off of. If we could read what he was holding to see if letters were flipped, then we'd know, but we can't read it. My assumption: Considering how detail-oriented the setting and Phoenix's clothes are, I'm certain the director was smart enough to position Phoenix accordingly. Gamestop may have flipped the image so that Phoenix is facing the article's type, to make the article more engaging from an aesthetic sense. If so, shame on Gamespot.

lol The movie can never capture the intense action in the court room as the games. I rather watch Law & Order.

@King-gamer: OBJECTION! There is a huge contradiction in your testimony! And I'll prove it with evidence! Take a careful look at the statue of Lady Justice in the upper-left background. Now click on the link in the article to the official teaser site... Well, Mr. King-gamer? Even the judge can see the connection between the two pieces of evidence!

Yes I do have an objection. Phoenix stands on the left side of the court room, not right.
