Phantasy Star Online 2 open beta starts this June in Japan

Beta level cap raised to 30; full game to launch this summer.

Sega recently announced that the open beta for the free-to-play massively multiplayer online game Phantasy Star Online 2 will kick off on June 21 this year.

According to an announcement on the publisher's website, the upcoming open beta will allow players to power up to level 30. Like in all free-to-play titles, microtransactions will be offered and allow players to purchase virtual items for character customization and keys to unlock certain cosmetic features.

The open beta will be available for the PC version of the game, with players able to download the free-to-play Japanese client here. No firm launch date has been announced for the full version of the game, though it's believed to be released within the coming months.

For more information on the game, check out GameSpot's preview of the closed beta of the game. An English version of the free-to-play title has yet to be announced.

You actually don't need to learn Japanese to be able to enjoy the game. I've been playing the Open Beta the last couple days, and you can get by without knowledge of the language. There are enough context clues with tutorial pictures and short video clips, as well as several guides and a fairly strong and very helpful English community. We're spread mostly across Ship 2 and Ship 10 if you decide to play
